Descendants of John and Margaret Skelton Standiford Note: There are different viewpoints as to the father of this John Standiford. Robert Barnes says in his book, Baltimore County Families , that he was William. A William Stanfort witnessed the will of Forker Frissell in St. Mary's County on December 13, 1661. Mr. Barnes assumed that it was this William who moved to Baltimore County and was John's father. The first evidence of a William in Baltimore County is in June , when a William surveyed 104 acres in Hopewell. However, this theory leaves many Standiford family members in the Baltimore and Virginia without a connection. Many researchers have concluded that the family was originally from York Co, Virginia. In Virginia Wills 1691-1694 York County there is the Will of John Sandifor dated January 25, 1691 thought by some to be the progenitor. However, this is not the case.

Skelton, whose sudden death ended the career of a distinguished scholar and great public servant, was one of the original members of the Canadian Political Science Association. He was its first secretary and a former president. His loss is a heavy one to many groups as to the whole country but it is felt with especial keenness by those from whose ranks he came. Following his graduation, Skelton returned to complete the Honour Course in Greek, principally as he said, because he wanted to sit under John Macnaughton. Apparently shy and diffident, Skelton always sought out a genuine personality with a fresh and revealing mind. There could be no greater contrast than that between such a turbulent master of exaggerated expression and Skelton with his supreme temperance and balance, but John Macnaughton was a living personality and Skelton was drawn to people who were alive and genuine. As of all things which touched him deeply, it was only in rare moments of intimacy that he would speak regretfully of having no leisure to re-read Sophocles and Euripides. (Characteristically, he was less reticent in his admiration for Ogden Nash.) Thus equipped, and with some experience as a salesman of "stereopticon" photographs in England, he turned to literary journalism as assistant editor of

Skelton, John (c1460-1529) English poet. Skelton is known for his satire, humorous and realistic verse, and short, "breathless" lines and irregular rhyme-scheme, called Skeltonic meter. His surviving works include A Garland of Laurel (c 1520), an allegorical poem dealing with the crowning of Skelton himself as a great poet; Philip Sparrow (c1 500), a lyric mourning the death of a sparrow, the pet of a young girl; Colin Clout (cI519), a satire on the abuses of the Church; The Bowge of Court , a satire in allegory on life at the English court; Magnificence , a Morality Play; The Tunning of Elinour Rumming , a coarse and humorous work, giving a realistic picture of contemporary low life; and Why Come Ye Not to Court? (c1523) and Speak, Parrot, satires on Cardinal Wolsey. Skelton received the title of Poet Laureate from both Oxford and Cambridge universities and held an unofficial position as laureate under Henry VIII He was ordained a priest, but spent most of his time at court, where he made many enemies by his outspokenness. As a result of the hostility between him and Cardinal Wolsey, he was forced to seek refuge with the abbot of Westminster, with whom he stayed virtually as a prisoner until his death. Skelton is considered a poet of the transition between England of the Middle Ages and the Elizabethan period, writing in the tradition Of Chaucer, Gower, and Lydgate and the medieval Latin poets. Interest in his work was revived in the 20th century by Robert Graves, and Skeltonic meter is parodied in the early verse of W. H. Auden
