Horse Heaven Why did you choose to write about horses? I love horses and think they are very mysterious. There aren't many novels about horseracing. Of all the horses you have owned, which one is your favorite and why? Mr. T. he was my first, he was beautiful and loved me, and I thought he was of normal human intelligence. Where is your favorite place to ride? The airfield below my house. What is the most important lesson you have learned from a horse? To be quiet and patience. What name would you choose for a racehorse? Hallelujah. What is the subject of your next book? Sex. Your most aggravating habit? Being scatterbrained.

    "Moo"
Between reading Moo and DeLillo's White Noise , I feel like I just went back to college! I enjoyed Moo and was surprised at how long it took me to read it nearly three days, with two days of solid reading. Smiley populates this book with a university microcosm. At first, it's a little confusing, but it doesn't take long until you are into the swing of it and know these people (just like college). The book takes place during two semesters in the 1989-90 school year - when businesses are downsizing and even the state funded education system must trim. The book explores the implications of businesses funding "scientific" study and reminds us of the importance of the Land Grant Act. I think we too often relate a college education to a business degree and forget that there are many other reasons to attend college. I graduated from the University of New Hampshire, also a Land Grant College, where in my second year I had three Animal Science majors for housemates. Moo happily brought me back to this time in my life.

Smiley says Moo U. doesn't really exist, really
    May 26, 1996
Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us Jane Smiley 's latest novel, "Moo," is a work of fiction, a farce, an academic comedy, which describes life at an agricultural university in the United States. I know it was written with UC Davis is mind. Smiley denies it, but trust me on this one. It's all about UCD. Apparently, a lot of people have figured this one out because "Moo" is a paperback best-seller in Davis. It's a best-seller in other places, too, but I'm convinced people are buying it here because they know the cast of characters. In a recent interview, Smiley said she was prompted to create the fictional Moo University because she lives in Ames, Iowa, and teaches at Iowa State University. "There was just so much funny stuff," she said "and I always wanted to write both a tragedy and a comedy on the same theme. 'A Thousand Acres' was the tragedy, the theme was American agriculture and technology, and 'Moo' was the comedy." But she insists that "Moo" is not a roman a clef and that she had no inside knowledge about the academic goings-on at Iowa State, much less Davis. "I'm out of the loop," she said. OK, we'll believe her.

    SALINGER, J.D. Nine Stories.
Boston: Little Brown (1953). Salinger's second book and first collection of short fiction, which some consider even more accomplished than his landmark novel, The Catcher in the Rye , and which was issued in an edition only half as large (5000 copies vs. 10,000 for Catcher ). These stories helped establish Salinger permanently in the pantheon of American postwar writers, and his continued publication of short stories in The New Yorker over the next decade cemented his reputation. This copy has a faint label removal shadow on the front flyleaf and only a hint of the typical edge-darkening to the page signatures; very near fine in a crisp, bright, near fine, price-clipped dust jacket. One of the most attractive copies of this title we have seen offered for sale in recent years: the dust jacket is notoriously prone to rubbing and fading, very little of which is in evidence here. With custom clamshell case. SARTON, May.

Jane Smiley writes a compact but full Dickens biography
    By JIM BARLOON
CHARLES DICKENS. By Jane Smiley. Viking, $19.95; 212 pp. GEORGE Orwell argued that what distinguishes Dickens' writing is the "unnecessary detail." If so, Jane Smiley has written a very un-Dickensian biography. At only 212 pages, Smiley's Charles Dickens Volume 21 in the Penguin Lives series provides a refreshing tonic to the exhaustive, voluminous tomes issued by modern-day biographers (Robert Caro's recently published third volume of his life of Lyndon Johnson covers 10 years of Johnson's life in more than 1,100 pages). Penguin Lives are biographies of approximately 200 pages Lives for people with lives. Given these parameters, Smiley, herself a successful novelist and scholar, proves that the life and life work of a figure as colossal as Dickens can be compassed within such confines without diminishing his greatness. Novelist, journalist, social reformer, bon vivant, traveler, tortured soul here is Dickens, presented in his various virtuoso guises, though on a less gargantuan scale than Dickens' own daemonic, larger-than-life personality.

    58. Smiley, Jane
smiley, jane (1949 ). American novelist and short-story writer, whose works, while ranging widely in type from historical sagas
    http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/S/smileyjane/1.h
Smiley, Jane American novelist and short-story writer, whose works, while ranging widely in type from historical sagas to mysteries, focus on the complications of family life. In 1992 she won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her novel A Thousand Acres (1991).
Smiley was born in Los Angeles, and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. She was educated at Vassar College, receiving her B.A. degree in 1971, and at the University of Iowa, from which she received her M.A. degree in 1975, her M.F.A. degree in 1976, and her Ph.D. degree in 1978. In 1981 Smiley began teaching at Iowa State University. She became a full professor in 1981.
Smiley's first novel, Barn Blind (1980), tells the story of a severe mother who alienates her husband and children after one of her sons dies in a horseback-riding accident. A later novel, The Greenlanders (1988), about a curse that afflicts several generations of a 14th-century Scandinavian family, reflects Smiley's training as a scholar of medieval literature. Two collections of her shorter fiction also have been published: The Age of Grief (1987) and Ordinary Love and Good Will (1989).
Smiley's novel A Thousand Acres, is the story of an Iowa farm family torn apart by disputes over inheritance and long-buried memories of incest. The book mixes tragic melodrama with social commentary about the disintegration of American farm life. It is considered by many to be a loose retelling of the play King Lear (1605?) by English playwright William Shakespeare, specifically in its portrayal of a patriarchal father and his relationships with his daughters. In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, the novel also was awarded the National Book Critics' Circle Award in 1992. Another novel by Smiley, Moo, was published in 1995.
