I specialise in MODERN FIRST EDITIONS many of which are out of print and many of which are signed. Most are unread, many are very fine and all are in collectable condition (any faults are always noted). Books are well packed to survive today's rugged mailing systems and all books are wrapper protected with inert film. I offer you an on line catalogue linked live to the ABE containing well over 1000 selected titles. This listing is updated weekly. On this site I advise of new titles and highlights from my back catalogue. 46. "Ibn Khaldun, The Father Of Economics"
Paper by Ibrahim M. Oweiss citing Khaldun's writings as the inspiration of modern economic theory and of adam smith himself.
http://www.georgetown.edu/oweiss/ibn.htm
IBRAHIM M. OWEISS
In his Prolegomena (The Muqaddimah), 'Abd al-Rahman Ibn Muhammad Ibn Khaldun al-Hadrami of Tunis (A.D. 1332-1406), commonly known as Ibn Khaldun, laid down the foundations of different fields of knowledge, in particular the science of civilization (al-'umran). His significant contributions to economics, however, should place him in the history of economic thought as a major forerunner, if not the "father," of economics, a title which has been given to Adam Smith, whose great works were published some three hundred and seventy years after Ibn Khaldun's death. Not only did Ibn Khaldun plant the germinating seeds of classical economics, whether in production, supply, or cost, but he also pioneered in consumption, demand, and utility, the cornerstones of modern economic theory.
Before Ibn Khaldun, Plato and his contemporary Xenophon presented, probably for the first time In writing, a crude account of the specialization and division of labor. On a non-theoretical level, the ancient Egyptians used the techniques of specialization, particularly in the era of the Eighteenth Dynasty, in order to save time and to produce more work per hour. Following Plato, Aristotle proposed a definition of economics and considered the use of money in his analysis of exchange. His example of the use of a shoe for wear and for its use in exchange was later presented by Adam Smith as the value in use and the value in exchange. Another aspect of economic thought before Ibn Khaldun was that of the Scholastics and of the Canonites, who proposed placing economics within the framework of laws based on religious and moral perceptions for the good of all human beings. Therefore all economic activities were to be undertaken in accordance with such laws.

Career Moral philosopher, often regarded as the founder of modern political economy. Though he wrote and lectured on a wide range of subjects, Moral Sentiments and the Wealth of Nations were his only full-length treatises, whose underlying philosophy and methodology seems to have been established early in his life, and both, though superficially inconsistent, reflect a single view of the world. In Moral Sentiments he explored the ethical conduct of men under the influence of social pressures; the Wealth of Nations was concerned with economic processes resulting from the operation of self-interest, and was used to illustrate the nature of economic relations in a market society, including the economic policies appropriate to such an order. Its remarkable success meant that it effectively defined the scope and content of political economy for later generations and was widely cited as an authority in favour of free market

Theory of Moral Sentiments

Smith asks that most fundamental question: Why do we regard certain actions or intentions with approval and condemn others? The Theory of Moral Sentiments establishes a new liberalism, in which social organization is seen as the outcome of human action but not necessarily of human design.

A vast and stinging critique of the crippling regulation of commerce and trade that was then current, it argued that if people were set free to better themselves, it would - ‘as if by an invisible hand’ - actually benefit the whole of society. The book influenced thought and politics profoundly, and was one of the foundations of the era of liberal free trade that dominated the Nineteenth Century.
Adam Smith (1723-1790) was the great Scottish philosopher and economist who is best known for his book The Wealth of Nations.
Raised by his widowed mother in Kirkcaldy, Smith won scholarships to Glasgow University and then Balliol College, Oxford. Returning to Glasgow, he was appointed Professor of Logic (1751), then Professor of Moral Philosophy (1752) and lectured on natural theology, ethics, jurisprudence and economics.
At the age of 36 he published The Theory of Moral Sentiments, a groundbreaking work on moral philosophy. His abilities caught the eye of the Duke of Buccleuch, who engaged him as Tutor to his son on the Grand Tour of Europe, where Smith met other eminent thinkers such as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Franklin.

Regarded as founder of classical economics, Smith was the first to complete a comprehensive theory of political economy. Smith saw labour as the sole source and measure of value: Labour is the real measure of the exchangeable value of all commodities. The real price of everything, what everything costs to the man who wants to acquire it, is the toil and trouble of acquiring it. What everything is really worth to the man who has acquired it, and who want to dispose of it or exchange it for something else, is the toil and trouble which it can save to himself, and which it can impose upon other people. ... Labour alone, therefore, never varying its own value, is alone the ultimate and real standard by which the value of all commodities can at all time and places be estimated and compared. It is their real price; money is their nominal price only.

Fiscal Responsibility: We must balance the budget and pay down the national debt. Adam Smith is recognized as a deficit hawk who has repeatedly voted for balanced budgets that prioritize debt reduction. He also voted for an across-the-board spending cut to maintain a balanced budget.
The Economy:
National Security: As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Adam Smith has been a vocal advocate of a strong national defense. Not only has he supported efforts to modernize our military, Adam Smith understands that we must also invest in our military personnel. He has voted for military pay raises, better housing for our armed forces, and improved veteran and retiree benefits. Committed to protecting the American values of democracy and human rights around the world, Adam Smith has supported the War on Terrorism, having voted in favor of military action in Afghanistan.
Education: Investment in a world-class public school system with high standards, accountability, and local control is the smartest investment we can make. Adam Smith authored the Empowering Local Schools Act, which sends federal education dollars directly to local school districts and gives schools more flexibility.
Social Security and Medicare: We must ensure Medicare and Social Security are kept strong and determine how to modernize the retirement security systems for future generations. Adam Smith authored the Honesty in Budgeting Act to protect Social Security surpluses, and voted to improve Medicare coverage of nursing homes, hospital care, home health care, and therapy services.

59. Lysikatou
Discusses economic and political relationship between the U.S. and China with reference to the philosophy of adam smith.
http://www.american.edu/projects/mandala/TED/smith/lysikatou.htm
Annita Lysikatou © 1999 Annita Lysikatou November 28, 1999 Engagement with China: A Smithian Perspective China seems to have been long stationary, and had probably long ago acquired that full complement of riches which is consistent with the nature of its laws and institutions. But this complement may be much inferior to what, with other laws and institutions, the nature of its soil, climate, and situation might admit of. A country which neglects or despises foreign commerce, and which admits the vessels of foreign nations into one or of its ports only, cannot transact the same quantity of business which it might do with different laws and institutions. Adam Smith, The Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations Book I, Chapter IX Introduction In today's post-Cold War world, U.S. foreign policy faces a plethora of uncertainties in the economic, social and political spheres. With the geopolitical order currently reduced to one major superpower, the new order is still quite amorphous. For such reasons, politicians, economists, military strategists and others in Washington have sought to answer the question, "Is there any particular country that has the potential to rise to the level of a regional, or even global, hegemon in the 21 st century?" Evidence suggests so, and the country that has placed itself on the path of fulfilling that prophecy is the People's Republic of China. A 1994
