"Tranquil seclusion I have vainly sought": The Frustrated Landscapes of Charlotte Smith and William Wordsworth
The French Revolution began as an upheaval against monarchical abuse of power that was eradicating liberty among the lower and middles classes in France. The Revolution's impact caused not only social rebellion, but also political and literary investigations into natural rights, liberty, and reason. Charlotte Smith and William Wordsworth, two poets of the period, were influenced by such queries, and both writers articulated, through poetry, their own responses to the French Revolution. In her poem The Emigrants The Emigrants was published, published Descriptive Sketches , which chronicles his walking tour of the Alps with Robert Jones in 1790. In his poem, Wordsworth also mingles pictures of solitary figures with those of the natural landscape. However, the poems privilege different kinds of landscapes as well contrasting approaches to the Revolution. The natural landscape figures prominently in both Smith's and Wordsworth's poems, but the landscape of solitary exiles dominates The Emigrants , whereas the imaginative landscape permeates Descriptive Sketches. Smith begins in solitary despair and ends with a call for renewed hope through united political reform. Wordsworth, however, progresses from enthusiasm to melancholy in

Ethelinde in Northanger Abbey:
A Palimpsest
by
Brent Raycroft
Jane Austen's sketchy romp through the "History of England," written in 1791 when she was sixteen, includes two references to a central character of Charlotte Smith's first novel Emmeline, or the Orphan of the Castle . Frederick Delamere, dashing and eligible, is the doomed hero, son of the heroine's guardian uncle and her first serious love interest. In both references Delamere's name comes up as an appropriate compeer for one of Austen's favorite figures from British history, Robert Devereux, Lord Essex, the ill-fated courtier of Queen Elizabeth, executed by her order in 1601. Smith's character appears first as part of a comic triumvirate of heroes drawn from three very different worlds: "... those first of Men Robert Earl of Essex, Delamere, and Gilpin" ( Love and Freindship 73). Shortly afterward in Austen's spoof, Essex and Delamere are again compared, this time under Austen's discussion of Queen Elizabeth, "... that disgrace to humanity, that pest of society ..." (74). Austen completes the simile: "Elizabeth the torment of Essex may be compared to the Emmeline of Delamere" (76).
Part of the novelty of Smith's Emmeline and the aspect of the novel behind this allusion is that Delamare is the hero of only the first half of the novel, and despite his advantages and persistence, he is ultimately rejected by the heroine, as Essex was by Elizabeth. Delamare is not executed, but dies from wounds incurred in a duel, which is surely the sentimental novelist's version of summary execution. By placing these two martyred heroes together the teenaged Jane Austen mocks not only the seriousness of history, but also the rigidness of both Queen Elizabeth and Charlotte Smith's resolute young heroine.

Smith, Charlotte Turner. The Poems of Charlotte Smith. Edited by Stuart Curran. NY, Oxford University Press, 1993. Although known primarily for her novels, Charlotte Turner Smith also was a successful poet and natural history writer. Her poems show that she possessed much technical knowledge of botany and have many specifics about plants. It was entirely customary, and very typical, for women writers about the natural world to use the verse form in this period. Back to Home Page Introductory Remarks Table of Contents Bibliography ...
