Smith, Charlotte Turner. The Young Philosopher, a Novel. London, Printed for T. Cadell, Jun. and W. Davies, 1798. A novel originally published in 1798 in four volumes in which the hero teaches his sister to be a "rational companion" and to "draw scientifically." The author modestly claims in the preface a "slight knowledge of natural history." Smith’s work shows the dense interweaving of women, gender and botanical culture in England at the turn of the century. She loved botanical pursuits, was talented in drawing as a girl, taking lessons with a landscape painter. She did watercolors of plants and flowers all her life. She integrates botanical expertise into popular novels, such as this one, into juvenile natural histories, such as Rural Walks and into her poetry. The Charlotte M. Smith Collection currently numbers some 4,000 titles. The books are less than 3" tall or wide and most are smaller in both dimensions. Principally collected by Charlotte M. Smith of Newton, Iowa, the books range in date from the 17 th century to the present. The range of subjects is equally broad, but many of the books concern, as well as demonstrate, arts of the book. The collection was exhibited in 1996 and that exhibition has been preserved as virtually as Tiny Tomes . Mrs. Smith also wrote two articles for Books at Iowa The Joys of Miniature Books and The Tamazunchale Press: A Bibliographic Checklist Books in the the Smith Collection will eventually be cataloged and classified in the Libraries' OPAC, InfoHawk, but the website in front of you brings together in preliminary fashion a variety of less formal, existing lists and descriptions. For presentation here, the collection has been sub-divided into United States Miniature Books and Non-United States Miniature Books. The United States titles, in turn, have been divided into pre-Twentieth Century and Twentieth Century imprints. The Twentieth Century books produced by fine and other personal presses and publishers have been organized by press or publisher as described in Robert C. Bradbury's

All is black shadow, but the lucid line Marked by the light surf on the level sand, Or where afar, the ship-lights faintly shine Like wandering fairy fires, that oft on land Mislead the pilgrim; such the dubious ray That wavering reason lends, in life's long darkling way. "I believe that what I take from my Irish heritage makes me a better Jew." Writer and Activist Charlotte Honigman-Smith Growing Up Jewish with an Irish-Catholic Father
By Charlotte Honigman-Smith
When I was five or six I asked my parents who Jesus was, having heard the name from the little girls up the block. I was told, as I remember it, that Jesus was a great teacher who lived a long time ago, and that Daddy thought that Jesus was the son of God, and Mommy thought that he was just a wise man. It satisfied me entirely at the timein fact it still does.
What surprises many people with whom I've discussed my family is that I was raised with a strong Jewish identity and a father who was a practicing Catholic. Many people believe that it may be possible to raise a Jewish child in an interfaith family if the non-Jewish parent has no real religious identity. If, however, someone in the house is actually a believer in some other religion, many think that the child will grow up so fundamentally confused that she will never turn out "really" Jewish.
So, for the record, my father has been a Catholic all his life, and one in active communion with the Church for as long as I can remember. Nor was this hidden from me. I grew up with icons pinned to the corkboard and rosary beads on my father's dresser. I was taken to Mass as a child, and I still attend with family on holidays and special occasions. We even had, I must report, a Christmas tree for several years, and I hunted Easter eggs with my cousins a number of times.

Smith SAN DIEGO The NFL's all-time leading rusher with the Carolina Panthers? It may seem like a long shot, but a source close to Emmitt Smith said the Panthers are one of a handful of teams the running back would consider playing for if he leaves the Dallas Cowboys. The source said Smith wants to go to a team where he would be the feature back and he views the Panthers as a possibility. The source also said Smith has recently purchased a home in the Carolinas. But a series of events would have to occur to make Smith available, and it's no given the Panthers would be interested. Smith remains under contract to Dallas. But he's scheduled to count $9.8 million against the 2003 salary cap. There have been indications Dallas owner Jerry Jones and coach Bill Parcells don't believe they can keep Smith at that price.

    Charlotte Smith-Taylor, the most decorated player in the history of the University of North Carolina women’s basketball program, is in her first season as an assistant coach at UNC. She has played the last four seasons for the WNBA’s Charlotte Sting and will continue to do so while coaching at her alma mater. Smith-Taylor, who played for the Tar Heels from 1992-95, is the only UNC women’s basketball player to have had her jersey retired. The 6-0 forward, who wore No. 23, was named National Player of the Year by ESPN in 1995 following a career in which she scored 2,094 points (third all-time at UNC) and grabbed 1,200 rebounds (second all-time at UNC). She is perhaps best known for her performance in the 1994 NCAA Championship game, when her buzzer-beating three-pointer gave UNC the national crown with a 60-59 win over Louisiana Tech. She also had a championship-record 23 rebounds in the game and was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player. The Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year in 1992, Smith-Taylor earned All-ACC and ACC Tournament MVP honors in her junior and senior seasons as the Tar Heels claimed back-to-back conference crowns.

    When on some balmy-breathing night of Spring
    The happy child, to whom the world is new
    Pursues the evening moth, of mealy wing,
    Or from the heath-bell beats the sparkling dew;
    He sees before his inexperienc'd eyes The brilliant Glow Worm, like a meteor, shine On the turf bank; amaz'd and pleas'd he cries 'Star of the dewy grass! - I make thee mine!' Then, ere he sleep, collects the moistened flower And bids soft leaves his glittering prize enfold, And dreams that fairy lamps illume his bower. Yet, with the morning, shudders to behold His lucid treasure, rayless as the dust; So turn the World's bright joys, to cold and blank disgust.
