GRAHAM, CHARLOTTE SMITH (1912-1993). Charlotte Smith Graham, dressmaker and labor organizer, was born in Dallas in 1912. One of twelve founders of a Dallas "sewing circle" that affiliated with the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union qv in 1935, she remained active in union affairs for more than forty years. During the ILGWU's ten-month 1935 Dallas strike for union recognition, increased wages, and the elimination of workplace abuses like kickbacks to foremen and mandatory work "off the clock," police jailed the recently married Charlotte Duncan fifty-four times. Although she was usually charged with violating court-ordered injunctions that limited the number of pickets in front of Dallas dress factories, Duncan was also jailed for participating in a strike riot on August 7, 1935, during which ten female strikebreakers were attacked and stripped of some or all of their clothing. The Dallas "strike strippers" made the New York Times , and articles and illustrations describing the melee appeared in newspapers in Italy and Australia. Condemned as "unwomanly violence" by Dallas editors, "strike stripping" was a spontaneous demonstration of the dressmakers' anger and frustration after months of employer intransigence. The independence and militancy of Dallas's approximately 150 striking dressmakers shocked many of the city's middle-class residents and even surprised long-time ILGWU organizer Meyer Perlstein, the union's choice to lead the Dallas locals.

Pine Needle Basketry by Charlotte Smith EBB TIDE SEVEN GEODE BASKET ANTLER BASKET ... gift shop Biography For nearly 20 years Charlotte Smith has been involved in the creative arts. Charlotte draws upon her love of nature and American Indian heritage to develop the intricate pine needle basketry she now exhibits and sells throughout the United States. Honors achieved include designer/creator of the ornaments on the 1999 Mississippi State Tree in Washington, D.C., Special Award from the Handweavers Guild of America and numerous placement awards in art/fiber competitions around the country. Artist's Statement: "Pine needle basketry is a means of connection to my past and my American Indian heritage. At the beginning of each work I have a preconceived concept of the end result. That concept may change in the process. The finished basket is more than a product of my head and hands; it is the creation of Holy Spirit within. Striving for excellence and a work of art that speaks to others is my ultimate goal."

Charlotte Smith, Sonnet XXI, "Supposed to be Written by Werther" (1786)
Go! cruel tyrant of the human breast
To other hearts, thy burning arrows bear;
Go, where fond hope, and fair illusion rest!
Ah! why should love inhabit with despair!
Like the poor maniac I linger here,
Still haunt the scene, where all my treasure lies;
Still seek for flowers, where only thorns appear,
"And drink delicious poison from her eyes!"
Tow'rds the deep gulph that opens on my flight
I hurry forward, passion's helpless salve!
And scorning reason's mild and sober light, Pursue the path that leads me to the grave! So round the flame the giddy insect flies, And courts the fatal fire, by which it dies!
One of many poems written in response to The Sorrows of Young Werther (see also Anna Seward's work ), five such sonnets appear in Smith's Elegiac Sonnets . Most of these poetic reader responses were composed by women (more in England than even in Goethe's Germany). Seen elsewhere in the literature of sensibility, we recognize in this sonnet the madness of the passionate which is accompanied by a complete loss of reason and rationality: in Smith's description, Werther metamorphosizes into an irrational animal a moth which lives solely by its senses. Yet, even as living through the senses and the passions leads to sure poisoning, sure madness and death, there is also a revelling in this state and a need to propagated it through more and more artistic production: Werther, for these female poets, is a tragic hero seeking, rather than "reason's mild and sober light," the grander, fatal flame.

Charlotte Smith: A Critical Biography. / (book reviews) Author/s: Kate Saunders Issue: August 28, 1998 Loraine Fletcher Macmillan, 416pp, [pounds]47.50 Most neglected writers have been neglected for perfectly understandable reasons - usually because they are obscure, difficult or just plain boring. Hidden pearls of literature are rarer than the real sort, and this makes Charlotte Smith (1749-1806) all the more remarkable. Here is an 18th-century poet and novelist, whose writing is packed with insight, feeling and wit, and whose influence upon the literature of the following century is almost incalculable. She is familiar to academics, but until now has not been accessible to the general reader. Loraine Fletcher's biography discusses Smith's work in depth, but presents her personal history in such a compelling way that it seems a pity this book is priced for the narrow academic market.

Desmond by Charlotte Smith
The Pickering Women's Classics Edited by Antje Blank and Janet Todd Charlotte Smith (1748-1806) was one of the most popular writers in the latter half of the eighteenth century. Desmond was her fourth novel and is extraordinary in being her only epistolary work and her most politically outspoken. Smith embarked on her prolific career as a poet, translator and author of ten novels and six children's books comparatively late in life, when at the age of 35 she had her elegiac sonnets printed at her own expense. Desmond (1792), her fourth novel, is the first major English novel to incorporate the events of the French Revolution into its plot. Smith does more than merely exploit the contemporary fever of interest in the French Revolution by using it as an interesting background as so many novelists did. Rather, she discusses the Revolution itself and draws a disconcerting parallel between political and domestic tyranny.

When you sit, don t expect to be noble. When we sit with what is, even for a few minutes, then this presence that we are is like a mirror. We see everything. We see what we are: our efforts to look good, to be first, or to be last. We see our anger, our anxiety, our pomposity, our so-called spirituality. Real spirituality is just being with all that. If we can really be with who we are, Transformation occurs. Charlotte Joko Beck

The Poems of Charlotte Smith
Edited by STUART CURRAN, University of Pennsylvania

Charlotte Smith (1749-1806) was the author of ten novels, a play, and a host of innovative educational books for children, as well as several volumes of poetry that helped set priorities and determine the tastes of the culture of early Romanticism. Her Elegiac Sonnets sparked the sonnet revival in English Romanticism; The Emigrants initiated its passion for lengthy meditative introspection; and Beachy Head lent its poetic engagement with nature a uniquely telling immediacy. Smith was a woman, Wordsworth remarked a quarter century after her death, "to whom English verse is under greater obligations than are likely to be either acknowledged or remembered." True to his prediction, Smith's poetry has virtually dropped from sight and thus from cultural consciousness. This, the first edition of Smith's collected poems, will restore to all students of English poetry a distinctive, compelling voice. Likewise, the recovery of Smith to her rightful place among the Romantic poets must spur the reassessment of the place of women writers within that culture.
"Excellent noteslong-overdue workbeautifully designed."Nicholas Jones
