Introduction:
special thanks to Scott Connors, co-editor of Clark Ashton Smith's forthcoming Selected Letters Clark Ashton Smith was born on January 13, 1893, in Long Valley, California, and died in California in August 1961, at the age of 68. During his lengthy and prolific career, he many volumes of poetry, including The Star-Treader; Odes and Sonnets; Ebony and Crystal; Sandal Wood; Nero and Other Poems (Lakeport, California: The Futile Press, 1937); The Dark Chateau and Other Poems (Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1951); and Spells and Philtres (Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1958). In addition, Smith prepared a volume of his Selected Poems in the late 1940's, although it didn't see publication until some ten years after his death. The late Edwin Markham selected the following lines from the poem "Nero" in a symposium on the most powerful lines in Anglo-American poetry that appeared in The Literary Review of The New York Evening Post on September 12, 1925: "Were I God

Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961)
This author is well known for his work in the Cthulhu Mythos. Here is but a sample of his dark writings. One is a poem, the other is a short story. We also have available here a very rare treat. A poem read by C.A.S. himself. Enjoy.
The Eldritch Dark
Now as the twilight's doubtful interval
Closes with night's accomplished certainty,
A wizard wind goes crying eerily,
And on the wold misshapen shadows crawl,
Miming the trees, whose voices climb and fall,
Imploring, in Sabbatic ecstacy,
The sky where vapor-mounted phantoms flee
From the scythed moon impendent over all.
Twin veils of covering cloud and silence, thrown
Across the movement and the sound of things,
Make blank the night, till in the broken west The moon's ensanguined blade awhile is shown... The night grows whole again...The shadows rest, Gathered beneath a greater shadow's wings. From "Selected Poems" by Clark Ashton Smith, 1971: Arkham House Publishers.
THE ABOMINATIONS OF YONDO
The sand of the desert of Yondo is not as the sand of other deserts; for Yondo lies nearest of all to the worlds rim; and strange winds, blowing from a pit no astronomer may hope to fathom, have sown its ruinous fields with the gray dust of corroding planets, the black ashes of extinguished suns. The dark, orblike mountains which rise from its wrinkled and pitted plain are not all its own, for some are fallen asteroids half-buried in that abysmal sand. Things have crept in from nether space, whose incursion is forbid by the gods of all proper and well-ordered lands; but there are no such gods in Yondo, where live the hoary genii of stars abolished and decrepit demons left home-less by the destruction of antiquated hells.

Clark Ashton Smith:
Soothsayer's vessels lost of continent.
The Return of Doctor Fu Manchu.
Author: Sax Rohmer.
Publisher: A. L. Burt.
The cover by... Don't know. 16. Zothique, Clark Ashton Smith. June, 1970. 1st cover by George Barr. The cover of the serial book in semantic the plan always contains, at least, two interconnected art layers. It is illustrative directing, connecting a cover with the literary text and general vector of development of a book series. This rule the most evidently is shown on an example of thematic work of the artist Robert LoGrippo. In a series Ballantine Adult Fantasy the artist Robert LoGrippo has become personal illustrator of the sea novelist William Hope Hodgson. From his four works three are devoted Hodgson. These three works of the artist Robert LoGrippo send to the public in summer of 1972. The books of two authors are made out as a single unit. This courageous art decision can be regarded as attempt to repeat great triptych J.R.R. Tolkien of the trilogy. The speech goes about book covers of autumn - winter of 1965:

Welcome to the English version of Klarkash-ton.org , a francophone website dedicated to Clark Ashton Smith.
Clark Ashton Smith is best known among francophone readers for his fantasy tales, notably for those related to his famous cycles of Zothique or Averoigne. However, most of these texts are currently out of print in French language. His poetry, which he considered to be his major achievement, remains largely unpublished in this language.
This site aims at offering a global overview of currently available information in French language on Smith.
Please note that this English version will remain almost limited to this page until the main sections of the French/main version are finished. English-speaking visitors interested in the life and work of Smith will not fail to visit The Eldritch Dark , the most complete online source of Smithian information currently available. F.A.Q. (2002) Clark Ashton Smith, Gollancz, £7.99, pbk, 580pp, ISBN 0-575-07373-X Volume 26 of Gollancz's Fantasy Masterworks series is a very welcome collection of the work of Clark Ashton Smith. Weird Tales , the premiere pulp title of the mid-1920s to early 1950s, brought out the work of a plethora of stars of the SF and Fantasy/Horror pantheon including a triumvirate who, more than any others, inspired the work of successive generations. Perhaps the two best known of these were HP Lovecraft and Robert E Howard, but the third was the fantastic poet and short story writer (also artist and sculptor!) Clark Ashton Smith. I first became aware of his work with the mid-seventies Panther editions of the collections Out of Space and Time (1942) and Tales of Science and Sorcery (1964), as well as the odd story here and there in anthologies drawing their material from Weird Tales . Needless to say I was blown away, as I had been by Lovecraft, and immediately started to devour as much CAS as I could lay my hands on. Imagine my delight, therefore, with this collection which gathers over 40 tales of the master, managing to include some I had never read before! There is also a detailed afterward by Stephen Jones of biographical and publishing details. It is very gratifying to see Gollancz showing the same discernment with their Fantasy Masterworks as with the SF counterpart, and many congratulations to them. I'd probably most recommend this book to lovers of HPL, but gladly point all and sundry in this direction also for the lyrical prose, weird visions and atmospheric terrors that helped define the SF field and paved the way for the generations of horrors that followed.
