Submitted by Boyd Pearson (12. Dec 2002)
I had just made my customary cup of afternoon tea, sweetened with honey, when I decided to check the mail box before the next downpour. Along with the usual collection of bills and advertising was a very large envelope proclaiming to be Global Priority Mail and decaled with the spider web insignia of that new kid on the publishing block Hippocampus Press.
I started to flick through it - taking a sip of now stone cold tea - I realised this is no trifling collection. It contains most of my favourite CAS works and while I see them practically daily on my web site reading them on paper again deeply enhanced my understanding and appreciation for one of Americas great forgotten poets.
The editors have selected 158 works, from a body of over 600, which they feel fall under the heading of fantastic; freely admitting the arbitrariness of this. Not an enviable task, and while any hard core fan will find a personal favourite or two missing, there will be little real disappointment.
I deliberately choose not to start reviewing the actual poetry contained in this work. That would be a piece of prodigious length requiring an inordinate amount of time.

Smith, Clark Ashton
Clark Ashton Smith wurde am 13. Januar 1893, in Long Valley, Kalifornien geboren.

70. Clark Ashton Smith – The Emperor Of Dreams
clark ashton smith – The Emperor of Dreams. clark ashton smith (18931961) wasone of the classic writers of fantastic fiction of the 1920's and 30's.
http://pictish.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/reviews/emperor.htm
The Emperor of Dreams Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961) was one of the classic writers of fantastic fiction of the 1920's and 30's. When I was beginning to read horror, Smith and Lovecraft were the boys! But nostalgia alone isn't what makes it a pleasure to have received this book for review. These stories were among the first. Their dark pages are the spawning ground for images that stalk through horror today. The Necronomicon was born here (and in the works of Lovecraft), gods and demons with jawtwisting names (such as Hzuilquoigmnzhah) ooze, slither and deliquesce through these pages. The imagery in these stories has become cliched through imitation and lampoonery, but it would be poor work that relied on imagery. These tales have another important component. They have structure, and it is in the building of this structure that Ashton Smith excels. His first love was poetry and language, and this shows in such places as the opening sentences of each piece. Take this from 'The Dark Eidolon': An excellent, poetic scene setter, atmosphere rolling out of each word. In a short story, a good opening is worth a page of description, and Clark knows a good opening.

Our first Classic Tale is City of the Singing Flame by Clark Ashton Smith (13 Jan 1893 - 14 Aug 1961). Smith was a true Renaissance man; a self-taught polymath, artist and sculptor in many media, and one of the 20th Century's greatest fantasists. As one of H.P. Lovecraft's extended circle of literary friends, Smith made significant contributions to the Cthulhu Mythos , including being written into it by Lovecraft himself as antediluvian priest "Klarkash-Ton". A number of writers, Harlan Ellison among them, have credited Smith's City of the Singing Flame with inspiring them to become writers, and TSAT is proud to present it here. by Clark Ashton Smith Foreword
When Giles Angarth disappeared, nearly two years ago, we had been friends for a decade or more, and I knew him as well as anyone could purport to know him. Yet the thing was no less a mystery to me than to others at the time, and until now, it has remained a mystery. Like the rest, I sometimes thought that he and Ebbonly had designed it all between them as a huge, insoluble hoax; that they were still alive, somewhere, and laughing at the world that was so sorely baffled by their disappearance. And, until I at last decided to visit Crater Ridge and find, if I could, the two boulders mentioned in Angarth's narrative, no one had uncovered any trace of the missing men or heard even the faintest rumor concerning them. The whole affair, it seemed then, was likely to remain a most singular and exasperating riddle.

The Seed from the Sepulcher
by Clark Ashton Smith
"Yes, I found the place," said Falmer. "It's a queer sort of place, pretty much as the legends describe it." He spat quickly into the fire, as if the act of speech had been physically distasteful to him, and, half averting his face from the scrutiny of Thone, stared with morose and somber eyes into the jungle-matted Venezuelan darkness. Thone, still weak and dizzy from the fever that had incapacitated him for continuing their journey to its end, was curiously puzzled. Falmer, he thought, had under- gone an inexplicable change during the three days of his absence; a change that was too elusive in some of its phases to be fully defined or delimited. Other phases, however, were all too obvious. Falmer, even during extreme hardship or illness, had heretofore been unquenchably loquacious and cheerful. Now he seemed sullen, uncommunicative, as if preoccupied with far-off things of disagreeable import. His bluff face had grown hollow even pointed and his eyes had narrowed to secretive slits. Thone was troubled by these changes, though he tried to dismiss his impressions as mere distem- pered fancies due to the influence of the ebbing fever.

Clark Ashton Smith
wurde 1893 in Long Valley, Kalifornien geboren.
