Cordwainer Smith
(Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger) Hi! My name is Mike Bennett and, in 1991, I researched and put together "A Cordwainer Smith Checklist", published by Drumm Books in Polk City, Iowa. CS has been a passion of mine for over 30 years and I was glad to be able to share my interest and be able to minutely contribute to the acclaim he deserves but didn't want.
Since then, I learned how to create help files so I rewrote and updated the information into a Windows help file format. Although it's over 8 megs, it has dozens of book and magazine covers scanned into it. Most of the pictures were manually cleaned-up but you'll see that the result was worth it.
Use the hyperlink to the right to go to the download page. The CSmith.zip file contains the 2 help files in one Winzip formatted file. You need to have Winzip to extract the files for use. If you try to download the help file and cannot gain access due to high traffic volumes, you can always get the files directly from me, simply e-mail me at the address below.
Please be patient as the download may take a while. Why don't you read "Alpha Ralpha Boulevard" whilst you are waiting?

Have you met C'mell, the cat girlygirl who helped Rod McBan achieve his heart's desires? Or Rod himself, the Norstrilian boy who inadvertently bought Old Earth one night? Or Martel, the scanner who was cranched at a crucial moment? No? Then you are one of the lucky ones. You can look forward to meeting the remarkable mind of Cordwainer Smith. There is good reason that one of his books was titled You Will Never Be The Same. (That particular book is now out of print, but its contents are still stretching readers' minds in newer collections.) Yes? Then extend your knowledge here... Wherever on Earth you come from... and Cordwainer Smith fans come from every continent except Antarctica.... you will find much to interest you on this website. When we emerge from one of Smith's stories, it is with a sense of enrichment. Life seems sometimes more tragic, sometimes more luminous...

Headings
From 1950 to 1966, stories appeared in mainstream science fiction magazines by an author named "Cordwainer Smith". From the first to the last, these stories were acclaimed as among the most inventive and striking ever written, and that in a field specializing in the inventive and the striking. Their author was a very private man who did not want his real name to be known because he did not want to be pursued by SF fans. It was only after his death in 1966 that more than a handful of people knew that "Cordwainer Smith" was in real life Paul M. L. Linebarger.
Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger
Paul Linebarger was born in 1913, the grandson of a clergyman. His father, an eccentric man, had served as a Federal District Judge in the Philippines, but had left this post to work full time for the cause of the Chinese republican reformer Sun Yat Sen, who became Paul's godfather. Paul Linebarger grew up in the retinue of Sun Yat Sen, for his father stayed with Sen during his exile in Japan and throughout his career in China. John J. Pierce has written, Linebarger spent his formative years in Japan, China, France, and Germany. By the time he grew up, he knew six languages and had become intimate with several cultures, both Oriental and Occidental.

    Scholarly Corner,
    by Alan C. Elms
When Rosana asked me to start a "Scholarly Corner" for her Cordwainer-Smith.com website, she didn't specify what kinds of scholars I should discuss. Cordwainer Smith has been blessed with resourceful and energetic fannish scholars, ever since one of them figured out in 1965 that he was really a political scientist named Paul M. A. Linebarger. If you're familiar with the website, you may have seen two of the best works of fannish Smith scholarship, Tony Lewis's Concordance and Mike Bennett's bibliography Among strong earlier efforts was the chapbook titled Exploring Cordwainer Smith , published by Andrew Porter's Algol Press in 1975, but featuring articles written soon after Smith's death in 1966 by Australians Arthur Burns and John Foyster. Another Australian contribution well worth seeking out is a long and thoughtful article, "The Lever of Life: Winning and Losing in the Fiction of Cordwainer Smith," published in a 1982 Australian fanzine called Science Fiction . It's by Terry Dowling, who has since become one of Australia's best writers of science fiction and fantasy (some of which sounds a lot like Cordwainer Smith).

This is the 160th Century Worlds Tour, the Universe of Cordwainer Smith website An "All World Travel Pass" has already been made available. For important travel information, you may click on the pass at right. Or if you would rather just start the tour, begin by clicking on the images above or on the icons at the bottom of each page. Old Earth is a good place to start (unless you've already been there, of course!) Or you could follow in the footsteps of Rod McBan and begin on Norstrilia and then travel to Earth. This website is my attempt to convey the experience of taking the virtual reality tour of Cordwainer Smiths' universe I've been constructing for the last few years. Until I can make the actual real-timeVR worlds available either online or accessible some other way, the best that I can do is to offer this "simulation of a simulation". Even if you can't "fly" through these worlds right now, I hope that my extensive use of screen-capture still-images from the various virtual worlds will be almost as good. For best results, be sure to see the tour images full-size by clicking on the small versions. In a few cases, I've created some non-VR images to complete the tour. As you can probably guess, I am one of Cordwainer Smith's greatest fans. More than anything else, this website and project are a tribute to this amazing author and his stories about the future. The real credit for virtually everything on this website belongs to him!

Brief biography from The Norton Book of Science Fiction
Cordwainer Smith was the pen name of Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger (1913-1966), a professor of political science at Johns Hopkins University. Linebarger, who spent much of his youth in China, worked for U.S. Intelligence in the Far East during the Second World War and later wrote scholarly studies of Chinese politics and psychological war fare. He used the name Felix Forrest for two non-science-fiction novels before entering science fiction as Cordwainer Smith with "Scanners Live in Vain" (1950). His only novel in the field is Norstrilia (1975) His extraordinary stories, most of which are related by their future-history setting, were reprinted in various collections, among them You Will Never Be the Same (1463) and Stardreamer On the Web:
