Lady Who Sailed The Soul" a profile of Paul Linebarger- - wordsmith extraordinary "Martel was angry. He did not even adjust his blood away from anger .... " For more than 15 years the greatest mystery in science fiction was the identity of the man whose career in the genre was believed to have begun with those opening lines from 'Scanners Live in Vain.' Until the untimely death in 1966 of Dr. Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger, one of America's most distinguished authorities on Far Eastern affairs and psychological warfare, most readers never learned that he was the man behind the almost legendary pseudonym of Cordwainer Smith, the creator of some of the most original and inventive science fiction ever written. Yet in a larger sense the mystery was only beginning. Even today Smith remains perhaps the most perplexing and enigmatic writer in the annals of science fiction. Because of his secret identity his contacts with professionals in the genre were few, and with fans virtually none. Though a voracious reader' of science fiction from the age of ten he developed in almost total isolation from its main currents. Not since Stanley G. Weinbaum had a science fiction writer shown such startling originality with his first appearance in a genre magazine. Like Weinbaum, he seemed to have "come out of nowhere" and to reflect no detectable influences by pervious writers. There, however, the parallels end.

Abstract
This paper deals with nonplanar wing concepts their advantages and possible application in a variety of aircraft designs. A brief review and assessment of several concepts from winglets to ring wings is followed by a more detailed look at two recent ideas: exploiting nonplanar wakes to reduce induced drag, and applying a "C-Wing" design to a large commercial transport. Results suggest that potential efficiency gains may be significant, while several non-aerodynamic characteristics are particularly interesting.

    flame still sears
BY GARY MORRIS Perhaps the most prodding of the pack was queer film artiste Jack Smith (1932-1989). The emphasis on film is misleading and limiting, however. Smith, who was raised in trailers in Ohio and Texas Flaming Creatures and Normal Love
    Flaming Creatures Flaming Creatures
(1963) was not his first film; that distinction belongs to The Buzzards of Baghdad By all accounts, Smith was difficult but charismatic, a magical trickster manically involved in all kinds of projects at all times. Never far from poverty in spite of a few grants here and there, he was gifted in seducing actors and friends to work for free and in "appropriating" materials he needed for his art. For Creatures and the films that followed, he used cheap, sometimes discarded, color reversal stock to immortalize the drag queens , mermaids, vampires , naked poets, and other "creatures" who populate his films. The effect is of a dream that stubbornly resists consciousness, the imagery sometimes subtle and painterly, sometimes stark and high-contrast in rendering the filmmaker’s ecstasy-drenched demimondes. Smith was raised on Hollywood kitsch, and the imagery of 1940s movie monsters, and especially his patron saint Maria Montez — to whom he built an altar and prayed — inspired him. Always a good talker, he insisted on Montez’s importance as an actress to all who would listen (and there were many). He called her "the Holy One" and "the Miraculous One." After a screening of one of her films, he told a friend, "The Miraculous One was raging and flaming. Those are the standards for art."

    39. John Smith's Letter To Queen Anne Regarding Pocahontas
Vouching for the integrity and faithfulness of Pocahontas, and reporting the lifesaving incident.
    http://members.aol.com/mayflo1620/pocahontas.html
John Smith's Letter to Queen Anne regarding Pocahontas
In 1616, word came to Captain John Smith that Pocahontas was coming to visit England with her husband John Rolfe. Captain Smith was concerned that Pocahontas might not be given the reception he felt she deserved, so he wrote a letter Queen Anne to personally vouch for the integrity and faithfulness of Pocahontas. He reveals to the Queen that Pocahontas saved his life on several occasions, and saved the lives of many English at Jamestown. Although Smith humbles himelf before the Queen in this letter (as would any English citizen), it is important to realize he was one of the most famous and influential explorers in England and what he said carried a lot of weight. To the most high and virtuous princess, Queen Anne of Great Britain Most admired Queen, The love I bear my God, my King and country, hath so oft emboldened me in the worst of extreme dangers, that now honesty doth constrain me to presume thus far beyond myself, to present your Majesty this short discourse: if ingratitude be a deadly poison to all honest virtues, I must be guilty of that crime if I should omit any means to be thankful. Notwithstanding all these passages, when inconstant fortune turned our peace to war, this tender virgin would still not spare to dare to visit us, and by her our jars have been oft appeased, and our wants still supplied; were it the policy of her father thus to employ her, or the ordinance of God thus to make her his instrument, or her extraordinary affection to our nation, I know not: but of this I am sure; when her father with the utmost of his policy and power, sought to surprise me, having but eighteen with me, the dark night could not affright her from coming through the irksome woods, and with watered eyes gave me intelligence, with her best advice to escape his fury; which had he known, he had surely slain her.
