John William Smith, christened William John Smith and also known as El Colorado, the last messenger from the Alamo and the first mayor of San Antonio, was born in Virginia on March 4, 1792, the son of John and Isabel Smith. As a youth he moved to Ralls County, Missouri, where he served as tax collector and sheriff and married Harriet Stone in 1821. They had three children. In 1826 Smith followed the empresario qv Green DeWitt qv qv qv and joined Gen. Edward Burleson qv and the Texas army in besieging San Antonio. Smith used his familiarity with the town and his surveying skills to draw the detailed plat that made possible the successful house-to-house attack; he also acted as a guide for one of the assaulting parties. In early 1836 he joined William B. Travis qv in defense of the Alamo; he was sent by Travis as the final messenger to the Convention of 1836. qv Subsequently Smith continued as an army scout and participated in the battle of San Jacinto. qv After Texas independence was gained, he and his family returned to San Antonio, where Smith became an influential citizen and held a number of offices. He was mayor of San Antonio for three one-year terms during the 1830s and 1840s. He was also alderman, Bexar County tax assessor, clerk of the Bexar County Court, clerk of the Board of Land Commissioners of Bexar County, clerk of the Bexar County Probate Court, treasurer of Bexar County, postmaster of San Antonio, Indian commissioner of the Republic of Texas

A merchant's apprentice until his father's death in 1596, he thereafter lived an adventurous life, traveling, fighting in wars against the Turks in Transylvania and Hungary, and surviving a period of slavery in Turkey. The life of this Virginian hero falls conveniently into five periods. John Muir, more than any other individual and with his 1890 Century Magazine articles, was successful in preserving Yosemite as the "crown jewel" of our present national park system. Thus while celebrating a great park's centennial year, October 1990 to October 1991, we also honor Muir who with his "eye within the eye" was the first to recognize and so state that everything on this planet is interconnected. SMITH, JOHN (1) Previous Next Biography: SMITH, JOHN Born in Virginia, a relative of Henry Smith, Governor of the Provisional Government of Texas, in 1835. He was married to Sarah Gillette who was born in Missouri. (All of the above from page 403, John Henry Brown's Indian Wars and Pioneers of Texas ). He came to Texas previous to May 2, 1835, as is shown in Headright Certificate No. 678 issued to him July 12, 1838 for a league and labor of land by the Brazoria County Board of Land Commissioners. It is quite evident that he did not reach Texas long before May 2, 1835 for had he done so he would most likely have secured a league of land from Stephen F. Austin or one of the other empresarios. Mr. Smith was a member of Captain Robert J. Calder's Brazoria Company at San Jacinto and on June 30, 1838 he was issued donation Certificate No. 399 for 640 acres for having participated in the battle. He was issued Bounty Certificate No. 1435 for 640 acres of land for having served in the army from February 25 to August 6, 1836. This he assigned July 31, 1838 to David White. The Deed Records of San Patricio County show that Mr. Smith was living in Montgomery County, June 17, 1841 when he sold Headright Certificate No. 678 and Donation Certificate No. 399 to Joseph F. Smith.
