War Of The Weenies
by L. Neil Smith lneil@lneilsmith.com Exclusive to TLE With a fair degree of frequency I find myself ... now what would the appropriate participle be? Somewhere between "criticized" and "castigated", I suppose, for my insistence that there is a formal, objective definition for the word "libertarian", a definition that is rooted in and, in fact, consists entirely of the Non-Aggression Principle, an ethical construction which holds that no one has a right to initiate physical force against another human being for any reason, and that only someone who consistently manages to live within the bounds of that ethical construction is entitled to call himself a libertarian. And nobody else is. The Non-Aggression Principle is the immutable standard by which I have grown accustomed to judging the ethical quality of my conduct toward others for some forty years. It is also how I judge the conduct of those others toward other others (to coin a phrase) and toward me. And it is how, whenever the need arises, I judge the conduct of nations.

    Review:
In a future intersteallar empire run by corrupt and decadent Conglomerate, a great injustice forces Arran Islay to become a space pirate. We start off with a vile torture prologue, then move to young Arran on Skye, recuperating from a serious childhood illness. The book appears to be an exercise in style, and I got only as far as chapter three before giving up. The overly precious style made my eyes slide off the page too many times. The occasional convoluted sentence like

L. NEIL SMITH WINS PROMETHEUS AWARD
We're happy to announce that our old friend and ISIL member L. Neil Smith received the Prometheus Award for best libertarian novel of the year ("Forge of the Elders") from the Libertarian Futurist Society. http://www.lfs.org The award was presented at the World Science Fiction Convention over the Lab-or Day weekend in Philadelphia. Because he was unable to attend, the award was accepted on his behalf by Toni Weisskopf of Baen Books ( http://www.baen.com ), publisher of "Forge of the Elders." To quote Smith from his acceptance notes: "'Forge of the Elders' accomplished several things that were and are very important to me. First, it reconsiders 'Social Darwinism,' arriving at radically different conclusions about the ethical and political implications of evolution by natural selection than are traditionally associated with it. "Second, it continues my interest in 'alternate history', taking the idea further back in time than has ever been done before; it contemplates the notion that, in other branches of reality, other species might have become sapient and dominant on Earth.

The Nineteen Eleven Effect
by L. Neil Smith Politicians are a demonstrably unbright lot. Take Franklin Delano Roosevelt. I've known since I was a high school senior (a thousand years ago) and read George N. Crocker's Roosevelt's Road to Russia that FDR was a few crayons short of a box. Reprints of John T. Flynn I saw recently portray him as having had intelligence and character remarkably like those of Bill Clinton. If you took all the American presidents of the 19th and 20th centuries (the current occupant of the White House being no exception) and threw them in a pond, you could skim stupid for decades. The phenomenon isn't limited to presidents. Our political system

We were almost free
by L. Neil Smith Remember 1989, when the Wall fell? Well, it didn't fall, exactly, it was pushed. It was smashed down, bit by bit with sledgehammers, and torn apart by the bleeding fingers of individuals who burned to destroy the symbol and at the same time, the concrete representation of government gone mad, and of one nation in particular, that had deliberately turned itself into a vast prison in which simple residence was transformed into a life sentence. I remember, too, shortly afterward, how eastern Europe shook off its subservience to the Communist Empire and began, very haltingly, very tentatively, to breathe free until the talk of freedom mutated into talk of democracy, and a Mordorian darkness fell across the land again. My own sad, stupid country began violently interfering, as it always has, in the affairs of others, and what might eventually have been an amiable Balkan divorce, like the Czechs and Slovaks enjoyed, was turned into a murderous religious war, instead. It is a murderous religious war that is still going on, and if you want to know what the real intentions of the United States government are, simply look at the way it now approves of the brutal Russian effort to keep Chechnya enslaved.
