L. Neil's book The War Dove contains a glossary at the end. My favorite definition is the following: taxation: obs. var. of slavery in which some or all of individual's productive capac. was claimed, on threat of injury, incarceration, or death, by central authority. Usual justification was "vital" soc. services, such as "pub. works," support for indigent, or collectivized defense; in truth, provided livelihood for nonproductive oppressor-class. Just ask about either Amendment. If what you get back is a spirited defense of the ideas of this country's Founding Fathers, what you've got is a libertarian. By shameful default, libertarians have become America's last and only reliable stewards of the Bill of Rights. Now, when he stood in the doorway and beat her to a bloody pulp to keep her home, would we memorialize him as a hero? Or would we treat him like a dangerous lunatic who should be locked up, if for no other reason, then for trying to maintain the appearance of a relationship where there wasn't a relationship any more? What value, we would ask, does he find in continuing to possess her in an involuntary association, when her heart and mind had left him long ago?
L. Neil Smith is the award-winning author of "The Probability Broach", "The Mitzvah" (with Aaron Zelman) and many other books. http://www.webleyweb.com/lneil/abelenin.html

Before I read The American Zone and The Probability Broach , I was expecting a Marquis of Queensbury sort of scrap about the merits of more or less government. Silly me. Here it is. Complete, unexpurgated, vitriolic, pure quill L. Neil Smith. SFRevu: A while back, a mutual friend at Tor said you'd be happy to do an e-mail interview. At the time I was suckered in by the picture of an airship floating across the cover of The American Zone and the thought of an interview with a smart, thoughtful libertarian. By the time I finished TAZ I was scared to death of what that might unleash. You don't do anything by halves, do you? LNS: Well, you know I'm one of "Heinlein's Children", and I believe that "Anything worth doing is worth overdoing". I also think we're up against a threat of losing western civilization, not to Communism or the Third World, but to the kind of creeps generated by Harvard and Yale, and Georgetown, and so on, creeps who try to make you think there are two, fiercely-opposed political parties, but who actually represent exactly the same opinions and interests. The Clintons and Bushes of the world have gotten a long way with their program, which is essentially to erase the American Revolution from history and turn us into the sort of sensory-deprived tax-serfs portrayed metaphorically in

L. Neil Smith - Libertarian Find out YOUR L. Neil Smith has twice won the Prometheus Award, given by the Libertarian Futurist Society for outstanding science fiction with libertarian themes. His Prometheus Award-winning novels were The Probability Broach (1982) and Pallas (1994). The Probability Broach was his first novel. It pictures a parallel libertarian earth, and wonderfully combines humor, action, suspense and libertarian ideology. The libertarian society in the book, and some of its characters, are further explored in sequels. Smith has written around twenty science fiction novels, many explicitly libertarian. He served on the Platform Committee of the Libertarian Party in the mid-70's, and in 1978 ran for state legislator as a Libertarian Party candidate, gaining 15% of the vote with a total expenditure of $44.00. L. Neil Smith is also an outspoken gun rights activist. He is founder and International Coordinator of the Libertarian Second Amendment Caucus, and is an NRA Life Member. Following is a list of some of his novels, along with brief summaries.

Freedom Book of the Month for May 2000:
Forge of the Elders
by L. Neil Smith
Baen Books, 2000, hardcover, 534 pp.
$21.21 from Laissez Faire Books

Capitalist monsters from outer space! Well ... not exactly. Turns out they're not monsters, but sapient individualists. And they come from all of the various alternate universes where evolution took a different fork in the road and the crustaceans or the dinosaurs ended up as the dominant and intelligent species. L. Neil Smith is known for his brand of no-holds-barred space opera centered around a libertarian theme. "Forge of the Elders" "seriously discusses life-and-death ethics, epistemology, metaphysics (the Aristotelian kind), physics, evolution, the authoritarian personality, and politics of unanimous consent," the author said in a recent letter. "In many ways, it's my most ambitious literary undertaking so far." I think it may be his downright best in terms of grabbing a reader and yanking him down into the suspension of disbelief that fiction requires, too.

Wed, 15 May 2002 07:33:19 -0600 * Mike Blessing ( mikewb_tsg@yahoo.com I challenge ANYONE on the list to think of someone being invited to an LPNM convention that I would object to as much as Joe objects to Neil, especially over an allegation from almost three years ago. (Russell Means doesn't count - I wouldn't object to him showing up; I'd just make fun of him.) Any takers? And do remember that Bubonicon has FIVE TO SEVEN TIMES the average attendance of the annual LPNM convention. It's funny you should bring this up, as I thinking while reading Mr. Knight's message how there's pretty much no way it'd be worth my time to go to the LPNM convention, but that if L. Neil Smith does make it to this year's Bubonicon, the "con" will definitely move from low to high on my priority list. Different tastes I guess. alan

Mike Blessing forum@lpnm.org
Tue, 14 May 2002 20:53:58 -0700 (PDT) gchervin@msn.com Well I guess you did, Joe. But this little ditty is nothing compared to the snotty stuff Neil has written about others with whom he's had spats! I'm reminded of that recent "Open letter to Libertarians" from David Bryant, where he speaks of how we sometimes battle each other to distraction - from our shared goals and mutual enemies. It seems such a waste of energy not to accept the fact we'll each see the world differently, but are really allied on the important issues. I like both you and Neil, know both of you as true patriots, and hope this disagreement doesn't sour any important LP work. It's a good thing you're not in the same state party organization, that's for sure! And it's probably a good idea not to have him over to any LPNM events until and unless you have a reconciliation with him or he has a reconciliation with the national LP people he continues to berate.
