DARKER ANGELS
by S. P. Somtow
Tor, ISBN 0-312-85931-7, 1998, 381pp, US$24.95
A book review by Evelyn C. Leeper
Walt Whitman. Zombies. Abraham Lincoln's funeral. Voodoo. Lord Byron. A panther woman. Edgar Allan Poe. And who better to write about all this but a Thai writer? Only in America. Well, yes, but all this makes DARKER ANGELS a hard book to review. I liked it a lot, but much of that may be due to the presence of Walt Whitman as a character. I find Whitman fascinating, not just as a poet, but as an observer of the Civil War. And DARKER ANGELS has a lot of that sort of observation of the Civil War, even if it is leavened with voodoo. But if you're not a Whitman fan, I'm not sure how you'll react to this. The structure is very complex with Griffin Bledsoe telling Tyler Tyler telling Jimmy Lee Cox telling Zachary Brown telling Mrs. Grainger about the strange goings-on. (Or something like thatI can't be sure this was quite this nested. There may have been some pops on the stack I missed.) The atmosphere is there, but the late appearance of Lord Byron and Edgar Allan Poe was in some way the straw that broke the camel's back, and I have to say that there's just too much going on here to make a satisfactory novel for most people. But I can't *un*-recommend this either. Ultimately, all I can is that here is what this. If you think it sounds interesting, give it a try. If you think it would give you a headache, give it a miss.

Mallworld
by Somtow Sucharitkul
First published 1984
What's up with that?
Mallworld is a loosely joined series of stories surrounding the indescribably rich barJulian family and the enormous shopping bazaar that they own. Or: a television personality, Milton Huang, tries to revive his failing career by making a docudrama of the travails of another lost barJulian offspring, one who has vampiric tendencies. The human species occupies most of the solar system, as far as Saturn; Mallworld is an artificial asteroid. Humans have benefited from technology supplied by the Selespridon, a vastly superior (and very sexy-looking) race who have – for our own good – sealed off the solar system from the rest of the universe until humans become more "civilized." Some people have – briefly, when certain bugs surface in the Selespridon technology – seen the stars; most just know they are there.
Who is this writer?
He was born in Thailand. He has written quite a few books, the more recent of which tend toward Gothic/horror/vampire themes; he adopts the name S. P. Somtow for most of his publishing. He is also a composer; his recent symphony

Worst Week of My Life - by S P Somtow
(contributed to Eric Weeks's Theodore Sturgeon Page by Bill Seabrook, permission granted to post this on the web from S P Somtow) Somtow Papinian Sucharitkud (S P Somtow) was born in Bankok, Thailand in 1952, and grew up in Europe. He was educated at Eton College and Cambridge, receiving honours in English and Music. His first career was as composer, but he began writing in 1977 and four years later won the John W Campbell Award for best new writer. S P Somtow has now written over eighteen books including the galaxy-spanning Inquestor series, the satirical Mallworld and The Aquiliad . He has also written two highly acclaimed horror novels: Vampire Junction has become a cult classic, and Moon Dance is already being hailed as a landmark in the field. Other novels by S P Somtow include Fire from the Wine-Dark Sea The Shattered Horse Forgetting Places and Riverrun . He now lives in California. In the following extract, Somtow expresses his sense of personal loss over the death of Sturgeon, who he acknowledges as a major influence on his own writing and I am grateful to the author for giving his permission to include it on the WWW. [The full article appeared in Fantasy Review , Vol. 8 No. 5, May 1985, p.9]

http://www.hotad.com/SCREAMCR/sumtow.html
Are you ready for "The Laughing Dead?" S.P. Somtow (of Vampire Junction fame) brings his latest cult horror flick to HotNetwork for net fans to enjoy! At a recent reading sponsored by our favorite Horror bookstore, Dark Delicacies (as seen on the recent Fox-TV special about vampires) we had the pleasure of catching up with proprietors Del and Sue as well as well-known science fiction and horror authors S.P. Somtow and Ed Bryant. Somtow gave a very amusing introduction of Ed, who read one of his original unpublished stories about love, lust, greed, violence, guns and innocence that tantalized all present. We would tell you more, but .... it's a secret! E-mail me if you would like to see him on our site. He has a new book coming out this year I would love to preview for youbut only if you beg for it! So bite me...I mean, write me, you vamp lovers! But hey, back to Somtow and "The Laughing Dead". So, why are the dead laughing? We'll have new video clips on this page soon so you can find out!
You're gonna love 'em...we've been laughing like the dead ourselves while sampling them for ya...video editing takes time, but what could be more fun than Somtow's twisted Thai humor and impressive visual sensibilitymore on that in part 2 of this review. I'll be writing that one from the plane with Linnea...a trip to Florida for a new movie again, maybe CD and conference too, I'll have to check the itinerary. Somtow...this bootleg video you gave us doesn't have any English liner notes! I guess I'm on my own now, since I don't read Thai.

US $10.45 "Intelligent, energetic, humane, engaging, humorous, delicate, and beautiful." Louis de Bernieres. At twelve years old, Little Frog has a richly fantastic and sustaining inner life. It is 1963, his parents have disappeared, and he lives with his maiden aunts, known affectionately as the Three Fates, on a family estate in Bangkok. But, fed by a steam of books and accompanied by his pet chameleon, Little Frog refuses to accept that he is Thai; eats English food; speaks only English; and answers to the name Justin. Into Justin's eclectically fashioned, whirling fantasy world steps Virgil, a black American boy, and together they embark on a glorious spree of magic and growing up, in which sex, adult confusions, comedy, farce, politics, and the voices of the East and West are fused into a voyage of exhilarating discovery. "[A] vibrant coming-of-age novel."
