SOPHOCLES (525-456 B.C.) B orn in 495 B.C. about a mile northwest of Athens Sophocles was to become one of the great playwrights of the golden age. The son of a wealthy merchant , he would enjoy all the comforts of a thriving Greek empire . He studied all of the arts . By the age of sixteen , he was already known for his beauty and grace and was chosen to lead a choir of boys at a celebration of the victory of Salamis . Twelve years later, his studies complete, he was ready to compete in the City Dionysia a festival held every year at the Theatre of Dionysus in which new plays were presented. In his first competition, Sophocles took first prize defeating none other than Aeschylus himself. More than 120 plays were to follow. He would go on to win eighteen first prizes, and he would never fail to take at least second. An accomplished actor, Sophocles performed in many of his own plays. In the Nausica or The Women Washing Clothes , he performed a juggling act that so fascinated his audience it was the talk of Athens for many years. However, the young athenian's voice was comparatively weak, and eventually he would give up his acting career to pursue other ventures. In addition to his theatrical duties, Sophocles served for many years as an ordained

Sophocles 496 BC - 406 BC most successful Greek tragedian, producing what were considered perfect tragedies as well as reforming the performance of Greek tragedy.
Source : LiteratureClassics.com Editorial Team
SOPHOCLES (495—406 B.C.), Greek tragic poet, was born at Colonus in the neighbourhood of Athens. His father’s name was Sophillus; and the family burial-place is said to have been about a mile and a half from the city on the Decelean Way. The date assigned for the poet’s birth is in accordance with the tale that young Sophocles, then a pupil of the musician Lamprus, was chosen to lead the chorus of boys in the celebration of the victory of Salamis (480 n.e.). The time of his death is fixed by the allusions to it in The Frogs of Aristophanes and in The Muses, a lost play of Phrynichus, the comic... [read entire biography] Source External Publication

B.C. , Greek tragic dramatist, younger contemporary of Aeschylus and older contemporary of Euripides Ajax is perhaps the earliest tragedy; three actors are used but the form is handled imperfectly. In his other plays, whether with two or three actors, the dialogue is polished and smooth. Antigone (c. 441) contains extraordinarily fine characterization. The most famous of his tragedies (cited by Aristotle as a perfect example of tragedy) is Oedipus Rex or Oedipus Tyrannus (c. 429), in which Greek dramatic irony reaches an apex. The plot is based on the Oedipus legend. Electra (date uncertain), the Trachiniae (date uncertain; on the death of Hercules by the blood of Nessus), and Philoctetes (409) followed.

75. The Theban Plays Of Sophocles; Oedipus/Antigone
An introduction to help first time readers find interesting the Theban Playsof sophocles Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus; Antigone.
http://www.akat.com/Oedipus.html
An Introduction, by a parent, for Mrs. Skinner's Class to The Theban Plays of Sophocles: King Oedipus, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone This is my personal perspective, at this point in my life, on these plays and about Greek drama. This may differ quite radically from what a classics or a literature teacher might have to say about the works. I am neither a classics nor a literature major, though I have studied both somewhat. If you look at these plays, especially when you are older, you might have your own interpretations or parts that have special meaning to you. It is my view that, as long as one is accurate and "faithful" to literary works, there are a great many perspectives from which they might be examined, and an even greater number of ideas, phenomena, principles, and experiences that parts of the plays may exemplify and illuminate. It is often helpful and interesting to use literary or film examples to explain or support points you want to make about real life. But there is a much more important use of good literature, which I will describe shortly. The way I read these plays, they are about character, choices, and consequences - particularly about the, often regrettable or disastrous, consequences of choices people make based on the kind of character and desires they have at the time they act. Furthermore, the character on display is typical of human nature even though the particular situations they face may not be the same we face today. The characters in Greek drama tend to be characters you know, or will some day meet. They will be your mates, your children, your in-laws, your bosses, and your colleagues. Some of them have been your teachers. (In
