Sophocles
(c.496-406BC) Together with Euripides and Aeschylus, Sophocles is considered the greatest playwright of Ancient Greece. He was born in Colonos near Athens, his father was a wealthy armour maker and he got a thorough education. His friends and associates were influential people, amongst them Herodotus and Pericles.
At 28 he won the first prize in a dramatic competition, defeating Aeschilus, and was to win 20 other first prizes in his life, as well as many other.
Of Sophocles' best known tragedies are Antigone, Oedipus Rex and Electra. He often wrote plots about people's destinies and the consequenses of their actions. He liked the ideal, and wanted to show his characters as people should be and act.
He introduced a third actor on stage, increased the choir from 12 to 14 individuals, wrote more complicated plots and liked to write about religious and moral themes. He was very prolific and wrote over 120 plays.
Sophocles lived for more than 90 years; there is a story that tells us that his children were beginning to get tired of waiting for their in-heritance and tried to declare him senile at the areopagus. He then read his new play Oedipus Colonus aloud, and the court ruled that there was no way he was losing it.

Mythological Background to Sophocles' Antigone by John Porter, University of Saskatchewan
Notice: Laius was son of Labdacus , king of Thebes . Labdacus died while Laius was still an infant and control of Thebes was assumed by the evil regent Lycus. Lycus was overthrown by the twins Amphion and Zethus, who assumed the throne. In the meantime, the baby Laius was whisked away to the court of Pelops, king of Pisa (near Olympia in the northwest Peloponnese). On the deaths of Amphion and Zethus, Laius (now an adult) was free to return to Thebes as the legitimate ruler. In the meantime, however, he had fallen in love with Chrysippus , the handsome young illegitimate son of Pelops. Laius kidnapped Chrysippus, took him back to Thebes, and raped him. Chrysippus either committed suicide, was killed, or was rescued by Pelops (the traditions vary). Later, Laius married Jocasta (or Epicasta), daughter of Menoeceus. When the couple were unable to have children, Laius consulted the oracle at Delphi, only to be informed that Jocasta would bear him a son who would grow up to kill his father and marry his mother. Laius determined that he would no longer have relations with Jocasta, but got drunk one night and forgot his resolve. When Oedipus was born, Laius had the baby's ankles pierced and gave him to a shepherd to expose on Mt. Cithaeron.

This link includes information on The Mythological Background to Sophocles' Oedipus, Sophocles as a Playwright, Interpretations of the Oedipus , Sophocles' Oedipus and the Greek Enlightenment, and Sophocles' Oedipus. The page provides excellent background to the play as well as information on writing at the time. If you are really ambitious, the site includes books of further interest. The page also includes three ways to look at the Oedipus story: 1) The fatalistic reading: Oedipus is merely a puppet of the gods, doomed beforehand to a terrible fate. 2) The "fatal flaw" reading: Oedipus' fate is the result of his own rashness and arrogance.

    SOPHOCLES' GHOST
"I should never have written that damned play." Sophocles' ghost keeps haunting me. That's always His opening line. I know what play he means: Oedipus Rex. "It didn't even take first prize," he grumbles. "An audience once started to stone me for revealing The secrets of Eleusis. They stopped only that I Shouted, 'I am not an initiate. I don't know the Secrets.' But I might have guessed if I'd thought of it. I didn't because one does not snoop on secrets of The Gods. It's bad taste." He wants me to Write something, of course. That's why he keeps haunting Me, that and the fact he likes my taste in His writing. I like Oedipus At Colonus , his last work. He wrote it at eighty-nine. His son, impatient For inheritance of so-long-lived a father, brought suit to have Old Sophocles declared mentally incompetent to inherit before The old man kicked off. As defense of his mental Competence, Sophocles read, in court, excerpts from the Play he was working on: Oedipus At Colonus . The judge Not only dismissed the son's case, but personally Escorted Sophocles home....But, "I don't write

Sophocles
sophocles Born in 495 B.C. about a mile northwest of Athens, Sophocles was to become one of the great playwrights of the golden age. The son of a wealthy merchant, he would enjoy all the comforts of a thriving Greek empire. He studied all of the arts. By the age of sixteen, he was already known for his beauty and grace and was chosen to lead a choir of boys at a celebration of the victory of Salamis. Twelve years later, his studies complete, he was ready to compete in the City Dionysiaa festival held every year at the Theatre of Dionysus in which new plays were presented. In his first competition, Sophocles took first prizedefeating none other than Aeschylus himself. More than 120 plays were to follow. He would go on to win eighteen first prizes, and he would never fail to take at least second. An accomplished actor, Sophocles performed in many of his own plays. In the Nausicaa or The Women Washing Clothes, he performed a juggling act that so fascinated his audience it was the talk of Athens for many years. However, the young athenian's voice was comparatively weak, and eventually he would give up his acting career to pursue other ventures.

Its detector looks for poisonous gases or sticky air, the motors bring the robot to hidden places, the built-in camera shows pictures of these dangerous areas and his radio gives us information about the detected materials. Furthermore, you can control the robot and how the solar cells spend power for missions that require low-power intermittent operation over the course of many weeks. The robot has two main operation modes, first mode is the autonomous mode. This mode is powered by the implemented artificial intelligence of each robot. The robot works independently, checks air quality, and gives a signal if any difference has occurred.

The Skinny: Fast, robust screenwriting software takes novel approach to script writing process with useful onscreen auto-outlining feature and extensive reporting capabilities.
Rating: **** (4 stars out of a possible 5) (December 1999) Adam Rifkin, twentysomething writer of Mouse Hunt, Small Soldiers, and director of Detroit Rock City, writes all his scripts using the same method: writing longhand on a yellow legal pad, sitting on the center section of an old couch at his mother's house and eating tuna fish sandwiches that his mother makes. His mother also types up all his scripts. Since Adam's mother has not offered similar accommodations to any of us, we probably should be using some software to write our scripts.
