"Gary Soto was born in Fresno, California, in 1952 . . . his grandparents immigrated from Mexico during the Great Depression and found jobs as farm laborers . . . The subjects of many of his poems are the members of the California Chicano community, whose hard lives and dignity amid poverty and often desperate circumstances are portrayed with spare diction and exact images, and without sentimentality." -Joseph Parisi

Introduction
This supplemental unit on Baseball In April and Living Up the Street was developed by teachers in the Schools of California Online Resources for Educators (SCORE) Project, funded by the California Technology Assistance Project (CTAP) and the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA). Gary Soto is an acclaimed poet, essayist and fiction writer. His writing is based upon his adventures as a Mexican American boy growing up in Fresno, California. He won the Before Columbus Foundation Award in 1985 for Living Up The Street , his first published book of prose. His short story collection, Baseball In April , was listed as one of the American Library Association's Best Books for Young Adults. The streets and neighborhoods of Fresno are an integral part of his writing. He has said, "For me streets have always mattered. I conjure up inside my head an image of our old street in south Fresno." The area where he grew up was much like the barrios he writes about complete with junkyards and big factories all around. He is widely read by adults and young people. Many of his stories and poems appear in language arts textbooks across the nation, and several of his books have been translated into other languages. As the students do these activities, they will consider the following questions:

Soto, Gary. Jesse. New York: Scholastic, 1994.
166pp. FRY: 6 ISBN: 0-590-52837-8 Summary:
Viet Nam era, Fresno, CA. America is a hotbed of change. Nixon is president; Cesar Chavez is organizing California's field workers. Jesse and his older brother, Abel, have taken an apartment, enrolled in college, and work weekends as cotton pickers, in order to cover basic expenses. Their subsistence is still poverty-level. Jesse illustrates class division, the bridge between youth and adulthood, and the ever-present threat of having the fun years plucked away by the exigencies of war. Review: Liberally spiced with Spanish dialogue. Heart-rending portrayal of honest, innocent young Hispanic men trying to improve their lots in life (back when America still believed that hard work was the key), including the first-ever encounter with romance. An excellent examination of the Viet Nam era, from the perspective of poor minorities, Jesse would do well within the context of a thematic study of migrant workers' struggles and the uncertainty of the future when the draft hovers menacingly, ready to pluck the poor from society. Out of context, Jesse may seem anachronistic to today's youth; however, people's memories are short, and

Pura Belpré and Américas Award Winners
in Joyner Library Teaching Resources Center The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996 by the American Library Association, is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding literary work for children and youth. In the first year of the award, titles were selected from books published from 1990-1995. Subsequent awards will be given biennially. The Américas Award, presented by the Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs, is given in recognition of works published the previous year that authentically and engagingly present the experience of peoples in Latin America or the Caribbean or of Latinos in the United States. This annual award, initiated in 1993, honors illustrators and authors of works with cultural authenticity, sensitivity and potential for classroom use. Pura Belpré winners and honor titles are identified by [PB]. Teaching Resources Center call numbers are preceded by Curric. Cofer, Judith Ortiz. An Island Like You: Stories of the Barrio.
