In 1986 Soyinka became the first African to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Again under threat of arrest from the Nigerian government, he fled the country in 1994. After the death of Nigeria's military dictator (1998), Soyinka returned home, where he resumed his political activism. Soyinka's works are concerned with the tensions between spiritual and material worlds, with beliefs as the underpinnings of social relations, and with individuals' dependence on one another. His widely performed plays often highlight the problems of daily life in Africa; best known are Death and the King's Horseman (1975) and A Play of Giants (1984), a satiric attack on contemporary Africa. His novels include The Interpreters (1965), which considers the plight of young Nigerians in an increasingly corrupt society, and

During the civil war in Nigeria, Soyinka appealed in an article for cease-fire. For this he was arrested in 1967, accused of conspiring with the Biafra rebels, and was held as a political prisoner for 22 months untill 1969. Soyinka has published about 20 works: drama, novels and poetry. He writes in English and his literary language is marked by great scope and richness of words.
Soyinka has written two novels, The Interpreters (1965), narratively, a complicated work which has been compared to Joyce's and Faulkner's, in which six Nigerian intellectuals discuss and interpret their African experiences, and Season of Anomy (1973) which is based on the writer's thoughts during his imprisonment and confronts the Orpheus and Euridice myth with the mythology of the Yoruba. Purely autobiographical are The Man Died: Prison Notes (1972) and the account of his childhood, Aké ( 1981), in which the parents' warmth and interest in their son are prominent. Literary essays are collected in, among others, Myth, Literature and the African World (1975). Soyinka's poems, which show a close connection to his plays, are collected in Idanre, and Other Poems (1967), Poems from Prison (1969), A Shuttle in the Crypt (1972) the long poem Ogun Abibiman (1976) and Mandela's Earth and Other Poems (1988).

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Soyinka, Wole Nigerian author and dramatist, who founded a national theatre in Nigeria. His plays explore Yoruba myth, ritual, and culture, with the early Swamp Dwellers (1958) and The Lion and the Jewel (1959), culminating with A Dance of the Forests (1960), written as a tragic vision of Nigerian independence. Tragic inevitability is the theme of Madmen and Specialists (1970) and of Death and the King's Horseman (1976), but he has also written sharp satires, from The Jero Plays (1960 and 1973) to the indictment of African dictatorship in A Play of Giants (1984). His plays have also been produced in London, England, and New York. He was the first African to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, in 1986. A volume of poetry, From Zia with Love , appeared in 1992.

The Educational Theory of Wole Soyinka

1. Theory of Value:
What knowledge and skills is worthwhile leaming? What are the goals of educators? Society attaches great sense of value to members' freedom from oppressive leadership. Society values cultural identity as an instrument of self-determination. Members are valued for theirindividual commitment and contribution to the general welfare of the society. (D-p.500) There should be a reinstatement of the cultural. values authentic to a society, modified only by the demands of a contemporary world". (B-p.538) Members of the society must be totally free from government restrictions on individual's ability tothink, and act free from external oppression. (E-p.429) Society will value effort directed at the reconciliation of tradition with modernism and progress. (C-p.127) Educators should not teach socialism as a finalized formulation on which to close the doctrinairedoor of orthodoxy. It is rather agrowing science and thus, leaders of society have the obligation to modernize traditional structure of the society so as to make it meet the socialist -aspirations foregalitarian objectives.

... who we are Wole Soyinka
Akinwande Oluwole Soyinka, the Nigerian playwright, poet, novelist, and critic, received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986. He writes of modern West Africa in a satirical style and with a tragic sense of the obstacles to human progress. A member of the Yoruba people, Wole attended Government College and University College in Ibadan before graduating in English in 1958 from the University of Leeds, in England. Upon his return to Nigeria, Wole founded a national theatre, The Masks (later the Orisun Theatre), and wrote his first important play, A Dance of the Forests , for the Nigerian independence celebrations. The play satirizes the fledgling nation by stripping it of romantic legend and by showing that the present is no more a golden age than was the past. In this and other dramas, Wole fuses Western elements with subject matter and dramatic techniques deeply rooted in Yoruba folklore and religion. He uses symbolism, flashback, and ingenious plotting to create a rich dramatic structure. Wole’s works exhibit humor and fine poetic style as well as his gift for irony and satire and for accurately matching the language of complex characters to their social position and moral qualities. Wole's novels are The Interpreters (1965) and Season of Anomy , which appeared in 1973. His volumes of poetry include
