record writing reading features ... Analog - May 2002 The cover illustration is a generic sci-fi pic. I do a bit of painting myself now and then, and I do wonder how painstaking it is to get all the whorls and whatnot on the planet in the background. (Click the image for a larger rendition.)
Every so often, I consider giving up Analog. I like what I consider hard sci-fi as much as anyone, but I don't necessarily feel that I find that in Analog most of the time. Instead, I often feel that I am reading second-rate semi/pseudo scientific fantasy by people whose first jobs are in the sciences. Admittedly, harsh. This is at the worst, of course, but the best is not always enough to bring me back every month.
This month, however, Stephen L. Burns' Look Away is the kind of story that will keep me coming back for a good year or two. Science fiction that really rips apart moral, ethical, political, cultural questions is the important stuff. I love a fun story as much as anyone, but sometimes the stories go deeper, and Burns really hits it this time, exploring the ambiguity of real life from all angles. Dave Creek, Shane Tourtallette and Mike Moscoe explore ambiguous propositions as well, with somewhat less success. A comparison of these four stories is instructive. Magic's Price Bud Sparhawk

Illustration by George Krauter Lofty goals are not achieved cheaply. . . . Jacob could hardly contain himself as he followed his family toward the winter festival where, he hoped, he would finally see a magician. Until this year, it seemed that there was always some reason for missing the magician. Sometimes the magicians did not come to the festival. In other years they came without warning, passing through the town so swiftly that, by the time Jacob learned of them, they had already departed. Three times they had arrived after the family had left, and once the entire family had been so sick that they had missed the festival completely. But maybe this year would be different. Maybe this year he would finally be lucky. Jacob wondered if even a magician would be able to find his way through the town's dimly lighted streets. This older section of the town was a confusion of close-packed buildings and immense ancient devices, most of unknown purpose. Perhaps the magician had no need to traverse the narrow streets. Perhaps he would descend from the sky on lightning bolts, amid claps of thunder. Maybe he would suddenly appear in a flash of light or through some more mysterious, magical method. But no, these were childish fantasies. The magician, if he arrived, would probably walk the streets like any other man.

  • "Sam Boone's Super Fantastic Intragalactic, Ass-Kicking, Body-Slammin', Foot-Stomping, Rasslin' Extravaganza" [permanent link] . A pretty interesting story in the Sam Boone series about aliens visiting the earth as a tourist attraction. Here, Sam must control two bitterly opposed groups of aliens who want to take part in a professional wrestling match to settle their 'dispute'. How can Sam resolve the conflict? Do the aliens know such matches are stage managed?

Richard's math is right there's no way we'd make it on banner ads alone.
Our banner ad income pays for the monthly server rental and not much more.
But we have banner ads on some pages, pay-per-view on fiction (for which we
pay royalties), and a unique targeted full-page advertising system which
(when we can attract advertisers) pays big dividends. The way our full-page ad system works is to require users to complete an anonymous demographic questionnaire. When a user wants our pay-per-view content, an advertiser is chosen who matches the user's self-reported demographic profile, the user is shown a full-page ad with a little

There are advertising systems which combine banner ads and Web sites. Don't
lose sight of the fact that banner ads are not the only kind available for
    your advertising campaign.
Picture, if you will, a site where the user is presented with a teaser
enough of the content to entice him. Then, in order to receive the rest of
the content, he must read a full-page HTML ad, then answer a brief question
about that ad, like "What is the name of our company?" or "Are you planning
to buy a new car in the next six months?" or even "Which of the following is the chief advantage of MAGNACOW(tm) brand bovine pain killers over competing drugs and devices?"
