Spensers

http://personal.centenary.edu/~sbeaver/essay2.html
In 1579, Edmund Spenser published his first work, The Shepheardes Calendar , which some critics say "can be called the first work of the English literary Renaissance" ( "Spenser, Edmund" ) because of its display of language "no longer plain-style Tudor, but coloured by country speech…[and] words from poetry abroad" ( Shire ). In addition to using the Italianate diction, Spenser imported from Italy themes and ideas about love, in particular ( Shire ). Demonstrating Spenser's philosophy of love, sonnets 67 and 75 of the Amoretti reveal characteristics of Spenser's writing in their unique structure and their reflections on the permanence love provides in a continually changing universe.
The structure of the sonnets is very revelatory of their author's identity. In his most famous work, The Faerie Queene , Spenser created a new form of stanza, now called the Spenserian stanza, which consists of eight lines of iambic pentameter followed by a ninth line of iambic hexameter and the rhyme scheme follows an ababbcbcc pattern. The Spenserian stanza had its origins in poetry from several countries: the French ballad, the Italian ottava rima, and the stanza form Chaucer used in his "Monk's Tale" from

a collection of 88 sonnets which reflect largely upon his ideas about love, whilehe courted Elizabeth Boyle whom he married in 1594 ( spenser, edmund ).
http://personal.centenary.edu/~sbeaver/essay1.html
Edmund Spenser, best known for his narrative poem The Faerie Queen , lived from approximately 1552 until 1599. He wrote the Amoretti , a collection of 88 sonnets which reflect largely upon his ideas about love, while he courted Elizabeth Boyle whom he married in 1594 ( "Spenser, Edmund" ). Sonnet 75 of the Amoretti describes a man on a beach tracing his lover's name into the sand, writing it afresh after the tide erases it. When his lover chastises him for his "vain assay," stating that she will someday die just as her name will inevitably be erased by the tide, the man refutes her statement and avows that she will live forever because "My verse your virtues rare shall eternize."
After fruitlessly pursuing a deer, the huntsman described in Sonnet 67 abandons his chase, and while he rests, he notices the deer who has returned to drink from a stream. The deer then allows the hunter to capture her, deciding not to bolt though shaking when the huntsman does confine her. This sonnet addresses love more directly than Sonnet 75, comparing the pursuit of one's beloved to a hunter's pursuit of his prey. However, the poem calls this chase "vain assay" and indicates that love, rather than being sought, should happen upon one. The poem's portrayal of females in love suggests that women will not yield to aggressive persistence, but are rather "goodly won with her own will beguiled," meaning that women must fall in love by their own reasoning.

    Edmund Spenser
London born poet, Edmund Spenser, is thought to have bridged the gap between the literature from the Medieval and Elizabethan periods. He's most famous for his allegorical romance, The Faerie Queene.
He spent his later years in a castle in Ireland near Cork. In October 1598 his castle was sacked and burned by Irish rebels, and Spenser fled to London, where he died on January 13, 1599.
