Profiled by Galen Strickland Norman Richard Spinrad
born in New York, he has also lived in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and London, and currently resides in Paris, France. Along with Harlan Ellison , he was perhaps the most controversial American component of SF's New Wave movement of the mid-to-late '60s, and if such an idea is conceivable, has probably irritated and offended as many readers and critics as has Ellison. Never a major success, he has however been popular within the SF community, serving on two different occasions as the president of the SFWA , and also as president of the World SF Council shortly after his most recent move to Europe. Photo by Susan Oristaglio While relatively unknown in the U. S. outside of the genre, he has a very strong following in literary circles throughout Europe. Many of his novels fall within the mainstream, and he has relied heavily on semi-autobiographical reminiscences for some of his most controversial stories. At best, the majority of his work should be considered fabulations of near-future possibilities, rather than be constricted within the confines of science fiction. More on these points later. He graduated from City College of New York in 1961, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in pre-law. He had begun writing during his senior year there, although it would be two years later before his first story saw print, "The Last of the Romany" in

Amerikanischer Schriftsteller (*1940)
Science Fiction Alien Contact Personen-Lexikon Norman Spinrad wurde 1940 in New York geboren, wohnt allerdings inzwischen in Paris. In Der stählerne Traum (1972, dt.

Science Fiction Alien Contact Interview
Der englische Titel würde He Walked Among Us lauten.

My favourite novels
A peer of writers such as Harlan Ellison, Michael Moorcock and Samuel R Delany, Spinrad's best known and most controversial novels, 1969's Bug Jack Barron and 1972's The Iron Dream - the latter featuring Adolf Hitler as a pulp SF author - were republished in the UK last year by Toxic Press. The French edition of The Iron Dream earned the author the Prix Apollo in 1974. A new novel, Greenhouse Summer, was published last year, but as a protest at what he sees as publishers' cynical promotion of business over literary value, Spinrad is offering the US rights to his next novel, He Walked Among Us, for $1 to anyone who will "publish it properly".

Bouncer : Italy: Brooklyn, NY says hello! ItalCon : Hi Brooklyn :) ItalCon : It's a nice and sunny day in Italy! Bouncer : It's a beautiful day here. Bouncer : too. Moderator : Okay everybody. I'm closing the floor now. Please bear with us while we make the magic so that Norman can type to the screen. Then I'll post an introduction and instructions and we can begin. Moderator : Hi everyone, thanks for joining us here. I'm Ben Trumble for SCIFI. Norman Spinrad is one of science fiction's enfant terribles. As the author of the controversial novel Bug Jack Barron, Moderator : he brought sex and savage critique to a genre still hidebound by 1940s morality. He penned one of the more exciting episodes of the original Star Trek series ("The Doomsday Machine"). Moderator : Kirkus Reviews has said of Spinrad's latest novel Greenhouse Summer, "Spinrad has a social conscience and isn't afraid to exercise it...funny, caustic, and dead on target." Moderator : Today's chat is cosponsored by Asimov's Science Fiction (www.asimovs.com.) Asimov's and Analog Science Fiction magazines are the leading publishers of SF short fiction. Today's chat is originating at ITALCON and special thanks go out to "The Sound", the company providing an internet connection from the convention

Snider unless otherwise indicated. No duplication without express written permission. October 2001 Interview: Norman Spinrad by John C. Snider Hail to the Chief - again! Norman Spinrad, having served a term back in the 1980s as President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), has just been elected to that office a second time. And he's ruling in exile, so to speak - a New Yorker by birth, he has spent the last 12 years living in Paris, France. Best known for such novels as Bug Jack Barron The Void Captain's Tale and The Iron Dream , Spinrad tackled the controversial topic of global warming in his 1999 novel Greenhouse Summer . He penned the Star Trek episode "The Doomsday Machine" - one of the most popular installments of The Original Series. He's also written stage plays, screenplays and music - he even interviewed Woody Allen for a French newspaper! Norman Spinrad was cordial enough to meet with me during my June 2001 trip to Paris. He's blunt, outspoken and certainly not dull. Hear what he has to say in our streaming interview...
