Lavender Disaster
By David St. John
Posted Thursday, November 13, 1997, at 12:30 AM PT
It was in the old days in Atlantic City
Of even the most desolate stragglers I pulled my ultra-cool thrift store fedora
Like a fortune teller's bazaar its ancient bricks Covered in narrow stripes of orange and lavender As if it were a gypsy's rippling tent The old woman inside said softly to me the words Come try To face her across the small round table Where she sat shuffling a bent pack of Tarot cards Sit down She quietly rocked a little in her chair Then she told me the story of the future I might hold As softly lavender as an electric summer sunset Down at the beach with maybe Stella or even Renata As she said You will sit in the throne of Heaven Well that's really nice I thought But I couldn't open my eyelids for a second Scent remained of my grandmother's lavender sachet Then got out before she told me something else I didn't want to know but I was worse than chilly now The night was coming down so black along the streets I just knew I couldn't go on to work that night How Stella would be pissed I'd spent that five spot On the gypsy not to mention I'd be back Early with no money from the shift I couldn't do But maybe we'd go out to the movies We hadn't done that since I'd been made a night clerk That would make her happy I thought the movies

28. Study For The World's Body ::: David St. John
_study for the World's Body_. david st. john. (Harper Perennial, 1994). Ira Sadoff.Debra Alberry. And now, I've been introduced to a new one david st. john.

_Study for the World's Body_ David St. John (Harper Perennial, 1994) There are a handful of poets who are capable, time after time and with seeming effortlessness, to make me wonder why it is I ever decided to take up poetry as a discipline. Hayden Carruth, of course, the finest living American poet. Ira Sadoff. Debra Alberry. And now, I've been introduced to a new one David St. John.
It was probably pure luck more than anything that led to St. John's Study for the World's Body, a 1994-published new-and-selected kinda thing, to be sitting on the almost-destroyed poetry table at the Case Western book sale a couple of weeks back amid the Schutz and McKuen that no one is ever willing to be seen purchasing. I picked it up simply because it had been so long since I bought any poetry at all, really, and I've re-read the greats so many times now that often I'll get snatches of Carruth stuck in my head like bubblegum pop. I had some reservations wouldn't you, if it were left with McKuen and Schutz? but hey, at five bucks a box, I was willing to take the chance.
A few days later, I flipped the book open and read the first poem. By the end of it, I was hooked:

Lecture Series Thirteen Ways of Looking at Wallace Stevens By David Carl, tutor, St. John's College, Santa Fe
Library Guild Lecture, May 2002 What is one man among so many men?
What are so many men in such a world?
Can one man think one thing and think it long?
Can one man be one thing and be it long?
The very man despising honest quilts
Lies quilted to his poll in his despite. The yellow moon of words about the nightingale
In measureless measures, not a bird for me
But the name of a bird and the name of a nameless air
I have never-shall never hear. -The Comedian as the Letter C -Autumn Refrain Poetry must resist the intelligence almost successfully -Adagia
Let us start with a reading of today's poem, Wallace Stevens' "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird": I Among twenty snowy mountains, The only moving thing Was the eye of the blackbird. II I was of three minds, Like a tree In which there are three blackbirds.

In 1775 John Jones (1737-1800), a bombardier with the Royal Artillery, was posted to St. John's for a second time. Converted from a dissolute life during his first posting in St. John's, Jones attended the Anglican church, but, as a dissenter, also held meetings in his barracks room on Signal Hill. When this was forbidden, the "small society" met on the barrens in the summer. A small Meeting House was built in 1777, despite the opposition of Governor Montagu, and John Jones, ordained by a presbytery of dissenting ministers in Plymouth, England, in 1779 became the minister of the Dissenting Church of Christ congregation. Ten years later a new Meeting House was built on the site of the present L.S.P.U. Hall on Victoria Street. Much of its funding was raised in England. John Jones taught at the charity school attached to the Meeting House. After his death Independent (or Congregational) ministers were recruited through the London Missionary Society. In 1853, after the congregation moved to the newly-built Stone Chapel on Queen's Road, the old Meeting House became Temperance Hall. Missions were founded in Trinity Bay, Fortune Bay (Belloram, Pool's Cove and Little Bay East), at Twillingate and in Labrador. A Training School in St. John's supplied teachers.
