    Living on the Plains
That winter when this thought camehow the river
held still every midnight and flowed
    backward a minutewe studied algebra
late in our room fixed up in the barn,
and I would feel the curved relation, the rafters upside down, and the cows in their life holding the earth round and ready to meet itself again when morning came.
Kansas Poems of William Stafford is about the region called Kansas, and also about the poet's explorations of human potential. Liberal, Hutchinson, and the Cimarron River are surface traces of deepset human intricacies. His writings renew memory, place, histories, and bonds to friends and family. Stafford shows what it is to learn a territory well: the universality inherent in detailed moments and landscapes, and the transcendence of human imagination. The result of such wisdom is these poems. The highly acclaimed poet William Stafford was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, in 1914. As he grew up he also lived in Wichita, Liberal, Garden City, and El Dorado. He graduated from the University of Kansas with an MA in 1946, and he received a Ph.D from the University of Iowa in 1954. He taught at Lewis and Clark College in Oregon from 1948 to 1980.

W ILLIAM S TAFFORD: G ENIUS IN C AMOUFLAGE
I n 1972, five years before driving to Missoula, Montana, to interview Richard Hugo, I was a student in the Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado. I was driving into Denver with my friend Reg Saner to conduct a Poets-in-the-Schools program. We had turned off U.S. 36 onto I-25 and were heading straight toward downtown Denver when, in one of those moments James Hillman discusses in The Soul's Code, dictated, perhaps, by one's daemon, I realized what I should do with my studies — with my life. I should drop the pathetic idea of doing a thesis in medieval literature to please some father figure and instead do a thesis in twentieth-century American literature, about William Stafford. My thesis would be immediately publishable, for there were no books about him. Best of all, I could drive out to Lake Oswego and interview him for the book. I could actually meet him.

The Eye Begins to See January 27, 2002 Traveling Through the Dark, Looking for Light
Traveling Through the Dark particular poem I really liked.
What I found bothersome in these poems is the same thing I often disliked in Bly’s poems, the “deep imagery" is often difficult or nearly impossible to penetrate. Now “difficult” isn’t necessarily bad. If poetry wasn’t difficult, there would be no need for English teachers – a bad thing, I assure you. Life itself is “difficult” and is particularly “difficult to understand,” otherwise there would be no need for poets, another bad thing. Still, if the connections the poet is trying to make in his poems are too obscure, if the reader is unable to make the connections the poet wants him to make, the poem fails, unless the reader is willing to drag his college professor along behind him like some ball-and-chain his whole life. Few are willing to make such a sacrifice, certainly not I.

Combs Counties of Record in this report include: Old Rappahannock Richmond King George Westmoreland ... Stafford Cos VA, and Fayette Co, PA . Note: Combs Deed Mapping Projects in some of these Combs Counties of Record include the Gough, Kendalls and/or Prosser Families. Note: This is not so much a report as a "1st-rough-draft placeholder" until we give our primo Combs-Kendall Researcher, author Denise Kelly Mortorff, a few spare minutes from her tremendous research on the Archdale, Combs & Kendall Families of England so that she can "do it up right."
Also, we highly recommend Denise's book "The Kendall Family History, the Life, Ancestors & Descendants of Abraham Kendall & "Millie" Ellen Gilmore," which was privately printed in 1989. This is an excellent book, wonderfully written, and still in print. (Not that we're prejudiced - the quality of Denise's research speaks for itself.)
