Poetry Review
Visible Ink By George Starbuck University of Alabama Press, 2002 ISBN:
According to Kathryn Starbuck, "These George Starbuck poems were written, widely published, and anthologized from the early 1980s to the early 1990s. George had often spoken of his Visible Ink manuscript and given public readings from it...." Most of the poems included in Starbuck's posthumous collection were first published in the Atlantic Monthly, Grand Street , the Iowa Review, and TriQuarterly. The Nation praised Starbuck as a "brilliant stylist, a virtuoso of comic rhyme, of literary pastiche and pun." Starbuck created a form he called SLABS for his Visible Ink . Calling it his final formal invention, these poems were "Standard Length and Breadth Sonnets." They are fourteen line poems, with fourteen unspaced characters per line, forming a dense slab on the page. Thematically, this book returns to many of Starbuck's earlier obsessions. He liked crazy word endings, playing with foreign languages, and the rhythms of bebop. Combining poetry with science, he refers to quarks, plays mathematical games, and praises the eternal beauties of physics. He returns to the war imagery of his youth.

In 1896 Starbuck moved his practice to Los Angeles. Among his church projects during this period were the Knox Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, the United Presbyterian Church in Long Beach, and the Methodist-Episcopal Church in Fresno in 1902. Before moving to Los Angeles in 1926, Starbuck created designs for a long list of Valley churches: the Madera Presbyterian Church (1914), the German Free Evangelical Lutheran Congregational Church (1914), the Fowler Baptist Church (1916), the Danish Lutheran Church (1917), the Powis Memorial Baptist Church (1920), the Biola Lutheran Congregational Church (1922), the Bethal African Methodist Church (1923), and the Cumberland Church (1924). He also designed Wylie Giffen's Butler Avenue residence in 1917 and the U.S. Post Office in Selma in 1923. Henry F. Starbuck died in Decoto, California, on August 21, 1935. John Powell also has written a feature-length article about Starbuck.

Bloody Pond
Lake George, New York by James P. Millard H ere Sept. 8, 1755 (Battle of Lake George) the Colonial forces under Lieut. Col. Cole checked the hitherto successful advance of Baron Dieskau and his allies, changing the British rout into ultimate victory.
H ere likewise on the evening of the same day- Capt. McGinnis assisted by Capt. Folsom with 200 New York and New Hampshire men, fell upon 300 Canadians and Indians encamped near the pond for the night. After a desperate struggle the French force was almost annihilated. Over 200 bodies rolled into the pool stained the water red and gave it its name. In this conflict Rogers, the famous Ranger made his debut as a soldier. N ear this spot Oct. 11, 1780 Major Christopher Carleton and his band of Regulars, Tories and Indians, defeated with great loss, Captain John Sill and an American detachment from Fort George forcing the surrender of that station.
