Elizabeth Bishop
Colwell, Anne. Inscrutable Houses: Metaphors of the Body in the Poems of Elizabeth Bishop . Alabama: University of Alabama Press, 1997. In this book, Colwell addresses criticism of Bishop and of her poetry. Bishop’s feminist convictions or lack thereof have long been the topic of debate. Also her refusal to express an opinion on art, lifestyles, sexuality or politics has been criticised. Colwell examines Bishop’s use of metaphors of the body in her poems and suggests a way to find a deeper meaning within the ambiguity and confusion of the poems. Millier, Brett C. Elizabeth Bishop: Life and the Memory of It . Oxford: University of California Press, 1993. This book by Millier tells the story of Elizabeth Bishop’s life and explains and evaluates her poetry. This book is very clearly written and Millier’s respect and appreciation of the poet are evident. He is especially interested in how Bishop’s poems came to be written and why they turned out the way they did. This book contains much useful biographical information which Millier helpfully applies to the major themes of Bishop’s poetry. Parker, Robert Dale.

Aftermath of Second Manassas
As had been the case following the First Battle of Bull Run, the Stone House continued to be the scene of ongoing activity in the days following the second battle. For the second time in thirteen months, the Confederates held not only the battlefield at Manassas, but also hundreds of wounded Federals being treated in the numerous hospitals in the area, including the Stone House. Many of these captured Federals would not spend time in Confederate prisons. Robert E. Lee was already considering a quick strike into the North and did not want to be encumbered with the extra work of transporting prisoners. Additionally, many of the prisons and hospitals in Richmond were still full from the casualties of the Seven Days' battles, fought just two months earlier. The Confederates decided to parole as many of the bluecoats as possible. To this end, the Stone House was set up as a parole station. As teams of Federal surgeons returned to the battlefield to tend to the wounded under flags of truce, Confederate officers were processing the captured Northerners at the Stone House. The ambulatory wounded were taken to the Stone House, where they were paroled and sent through the lines. There they would remain, as parolees, until exchanged. One wounded New Yorker who was strong enough to walk reported being paroled "by order of General

The Imitation of Mr. Starbuck
Nancy Harvey
Imagine an enormous royal blue tick. If that seems too repulsive, imagine a large royal blue beachball. Let a little of the air out to soften the shape. Add six scrawny appendages—two arms with three-fingered hands, and four short legs, each one ending in a brown shoe. Put a large yellow star (five-pointed) on the stomach. Set a bright blue head about the size of a cantaloupe on top of a tiny neck, and let two stubby antennae sprout from the top. Finish the face with two large, pleading eyes, a yellow clown nose, and a hesitant, crooked grin. This is Mr. Starbuck. This is our mascot for teaching character education in our public school. Character education is fashionable these days. It comes, not at the request of parents, but in response to upper-level teachers and members of the business community tired of dealing with irresponsible young adults who arrive late or not at all, who are lazy, careless, and rude, and who expect grades or pay for doing almost nothing. Mr. Starbuck is supposed to help remedy this. He promotes thirteen "responsibility skills"—be prepared, be on time, be here, be responsible, be a worker, be a listener, be a goal-setter, be a risk-taker, be polite, be friendly, be confident, be a doer, be healthy.

Papers, 1947-1983.
ca. 5580 items Access: Open Donald Finkel, Poet-in-residence at Washington University since 1960, has produced a sizable body of innovative poetry over the past two decades. He was born in New York and received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Columbia University. Much of his teaching career has been at Washington University where he developed the Writers' Program with his wife, Constance Urdang, but he has also taught at the University of Iowa, Bard College, and Bennington College. Finkel has written ten volumes of poetry, beginning with The Clothings' New Emperor (1959). His most recent volume, The Detachable Man , was published in 1985. Finkel's work has not received the extensive critical attention often given to the work of other authors; yet, what has been said about his poems is overwhelmingly positive. Finkel is a painstaking researcher and collector of information and his poems reflect this. They are grounded in a thorough understanding and appreciation of their subjects and often contain "found" texts. Reflecting Finkel's unique place among American poets, his papers represent one of the more interesting groups in the Washington University manuscript collection. His extensive research materials, journals, notes, and heavily revised manuscripts comprise the bulk of the Finkel Papers. A large collection of editorial matter toward all of his books and a small, yet revealing professional correspondence with editors and literary colleagues completes the Finkel Collection.

A Chicago native, Sward was educated at the University of Illinois (BA, 1956), Middlebury College, and the University of Iowa (MA, 1958). After graduating from the Iowa Writers' Program, Sward spent a year in England on a Fulbright Fellowship and upon his return joined the English Department at Cornell University. While he was at Cornell, Sward's collegues included the poet, A.R. Ammons, who helped promote Sward's poetry. It was Cornell University Press, in fact, that brought Sward's work to the attention of the academic community by publishing his two early collections, Kissing the Dancer and Other Poems (1964) and Thousand Year Old Fiancee and Other Poems (1965). Another poet who helped promote Sward's work was William Meredith. He wrote the introduction to

Posted by Stephen Walsh on August 17, 19102 at 06:46:54: This is rather unsettling. Where are all the true Handelians? Handel is among the greatest composers, and dare I say the greatest choral composer who ever lived. He never experienced a lapse in popularity from the day he died. His work was performed, copied, emulated and admired by such names as Mozart, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Gluck. His Messiah is one of the greatest oratorios ever composed. There are endless topics concerning Handel that can be discussed on this forum. Where are all the passionate Handelians such as myself? Let's fire up some heated discussions on this board.
