Contribution to Roundtable on Liveness
Jennifer Parker-Starbuck
CUNY Graduate Center Presented August 4, 2000 at the ATHE Conference in Washington D.C. on the panel, "Roundtable on Liveness." See the other papers. "As the mediatized replaces the live within cultural economy, the live itself incorporates the mediatized, both technologically and epistemologically. The result of this implosion is that a seemingly secure opposition is now a site of anxiety, the anxiety that underlies many performance theorists' desires to reassert the integrity of the live and the corrupt, co-opted nature of the mediatized." (Auslander, Liveness, p. 39) I'd like to begin with the above "anxiety" as a sitenot to debate the terms of this opposition between the live and the mediatizedbut instead to situate a "cyborg performance space" that can draw out the strengths of each term, creating a new space for critical analysis. Instead of taking a side in the debate over which term has more cultural clout, since there are clearly differing opinions or we wouldn't be sitting here today, I'd like to explore specific examples that seek to retain the live within the technological, examples that perhaps suggest answers to Auslander's question: "If live performance cannot be shown to be economically independent of, immune from contamination by, and ontologically different from mediatized forms, in what sense can liveness function as a site of cultural and ideological resistance?" (Liveness 7)

Cool Clubs
Rochester is full of cheesy sports bars and yuppie meat markets. Here's a few places if you're not into that scene. Note that the downtown (Liberty Pole) clubs change name and decor far more often than I can track.
  • The Bugjar , Monroe and Union.
Hip decor (don't miss the living room on the ceiling of the dance floor). Music can be loud but fun, leaning towards techno/rave and lots of dancing. Good choice of beers. No cover before 11, then just a few bucks. 9/19/00: Under new management, but still goin' strong. Still plenty of local music. Website
  • Milestones , 70 East Ave. (325-6490, 325-5880)
Bands, from jazz to blues to local rock. Serves meals and snacks. Formerly Jazzberries, another Rochester landmark. 6/1/97: Evicted from the old Jazzberries place by the State government or something, they've moved a block up East Ave. to a site that was formerly a diner.
  • Richmond's , 21 Richmond Ave. (454-4612)

Education report, 12th class, St. George Grammar School, Holger Meins
I was born on October 26th 1941 in Hamburg. My father Wilhelm Meins is works manager in a medium-sized technical company, so that you could describe our family circumstances as secure, regular and harmonic. ... I would say that my favourite activities are painting, writing, thinking, dreaming, reading, dancing, and doing nothing. Education report, 12th class, St. George Grammar School, Holger Meins
Suzanne Beyeler
Wolfgang Petersen
He was in my film school. We were together. It was from '66 until '70. Holger Meins ... who became later on a terrorist, "Terrorist Holger", he was there. It was a wild time. It was a fantastic time. It was '68 with the student revolution... I learned much more about life and about politics than about films... It was what a film school should be: it was very, very wild and innovative and creative and a mixture between this political student revolution time and us, reflecting a lot and the films. It was great. Gretchen Dutschke
Rainer Langhans
Where do people get the idea that they really can achieve everything with war and rebellion in this day and age? I really have to say that precisely in Holger's case, I saw it as war against himself and not seriously for a successful war against the others. I believe that Holger had made war against himself. And this temporary projection, of being able to project it onto others, if you wage war against them, that you can win the war against yourself, I already found that no longer credible when he was in the commune. Less so in his case than with the others.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE STARBUCK HOUSE The will of one Thomas Starbuck, a yeoman, signed and dated the "Third day of the month called January in the sixteenth year of the reign of George III of Great Britain, Anno Domini One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Six" bequeathed the land now known as 94 Orange Street in the town of Nantucket. This will is the first recorded transfer of the property then referred to as ...one-half part of the piece of land at the East end of the tenth lot share of land laid out (o the w'ward of the meadow of Monomoy so called between the dwelling house of Jethro Starbuck and the highway that runs athwart said shore." The land was left to the brothers George and Zenas Gardner, grandchildren of Thomas Starbuck and descendants of Edward and Nathaniel Starbuck, both original settlers of the island in 1659, and Richard Gardner, who settled seven years later. Of the two Gardner brothers, George was a member of the board of Selectmen which petitioned the British to partially lift their blockade to forestall starvation on the island during the war of 1812 (the island was too isolated for the US Government to effectively protect). Zenas Gardner was best known for his high standing in the Quaker society when the new meeting house was built on Fair Street in 1833. We look forward to you sharing a piece of your history in this historic Nanutucket property.

The Harby Website Village Guide Harby History What's on Harby school Sponsored by Harby Limited METHODISM IN HARBY
From the book by Josiah Gill published in 1909, A History of Wesleyan Methodism in Melton Mowbray and the Vicinity1769 - 1909, pages 107 -112. HARBY. Population 652. Sittings 190. The name has been variously written Hareby, Herdeby, Herdrebye, Hetheby, Hardebye and Herdebi. This transition is perfectly natural and easily to be accounted for, the tendency of popular usuage being to drop what appeared to be superfluous syllables in all such cases. Worsaac derives the first syllable from " hare," as though its name had been suggested by abundance of such game. The terminal " by " of course proves its Danish origin.
An interesting fact relating to pre-methodist days is given by the great historian Nichol. It appears that in the 17th century the Quakers were very strong here; and says he, " There appears a deficiency in the register from the great number of Quakers then in the parish." This sturdy sect had become almost extinct when the Wesleyan preachers first came to the villages of the Vale with a gospel striking its roots deep in the fruitful soil.
