The artist's cellar was burgled a few years ago and the thieves half-inched most of his favourite bottles. 'I lost £5,000-worth of wine in one stormy night,' he says, flanked by surreal, paint-spattered sculptures in the cellar of his house in Loose. 'All those racks you see over there were full of wine. I had some amazing bottles signed by winemakers I'd met around the world. Since the robbery, I haven't had the heart to fill most of them up again. I've still got a list of the wines.'

The Observer
If anyone is offered an unusual back-of-the-lorry collection of wine in the Maidstone area, would they please get in touch with Ralph Steadman. I've still got a list of the wines.' One cuvée the burglars left behind was Loose Bowels, Steadman's own wine, produced from 100 vines situated in a walled garden behind his studio. He planted Pinot Noir and Schönburger in 1991 and reckons he makes 100 litres of wine in an average year, bottling and corking it all himself. 'We've had one really good vintage in the last 11 years, but the rabbits have started to eat the vines now and most of them are dying.' The point of the vineyard is to provide Steadman, his family and friends with a bit of fun. 'I put Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony on the stereo to inspire us as we carry the grapes to the press.' Home winemaking is something of a family tradition. When Steadman was 10, his father went to a lecture at the town hall in Abergele, North Wales, and came back with a nascent interest in fermentation science. 'We lived in a council flat and the front room was soon full of blankets, buckets and pots. I can remember this gentle gloop, gloop coming from the corner. My father made a fermented substance that just happened to be called wine. It should have put me off for life, but somehow it didn't.'

And he doesn't think Hunter S. Thompson should have a gun. By Gregory Daurer Fear and loathing artist Ralph Steadman feels both working with gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, and occasionally on his own. A humorous, visual alchemist, Steadman turns the grotesque into gold. He even has the look of a wizard with his crown of white hair and his Hawaiian necklaces. We know Steadman for his splattered inkings, which punctuate the off-the-wall antics in books of Thompson's such as "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "The Curse of Lono," as well as the writer's occasional Rolling Stone articles. Steadman has also written and illustrated books on wine ( "The Grapes of Ralph" ), whiskey, da Vinci, Freud and God ("The Big I Am"). Throw a few children's stories into the merry mix, too. His Charlie Chaplin stamp has traveled the U.K. via the British postal system, and many a tippler has admired the graphics he has done for wine and

Archives November 15, 2002 > Ralph Steadman's Deep Drink Ralph Steadman's Deep Drink By Matthew DeBord Ralph Steadman is in the Astor Court of New York's St. Regis hotel for breakfast. There's a mischievous glint in his eye. He wants to know if his publicist, who is sitting at the table with him and Anna, Steadman's wife of 30 years, knows about the Maxfield Parrish mural in the hotel's King Cole Bar, a few steps away. She doesn't. But he's happy to fill her in. The mural depicts King Cole, of course, with his Renaissance courtiers. "Well," Steadman rumbles in his heavy yet somehow impish voice, "you can see that the king is pleased with himself. And notice that some of the attendants are sniffing at the air." He grins demonically as his voice trails off. Steadman, 66, likes to tell a story. And if it's a story of aestheticized regal flatulence, so much the better. Human flaws—the inherent hilarity of foible, the amusingly degraded condition we all inevitably find ourselves in—have for the better part of 40 years been the famous British illustrator and cartoonist's stock-in-trade. A strapping figure whose balding head is ringed by a nimbus of fluffy gray fringe, Steadman looks more than a little out of place in this posh, marbled setting. If he hadn't been staying here regularly for years, you'd say without hesitation that this simply isn't his scene. But perhaps because he can gaze over at the Parrish mural and be guaranteed a laugh, he's completely at home.

Now in his sixties, Steadman began his career as a political cartoonist and through the years diversified into many fields of artistic creativity. Some of his technique, reminiscent of surrealist and post-surrealist experiments, included acrylics and photo montage, quasi-abstract-expressionist drawings, ink and collage combinations, organic sculptures and even a silk-screened print with bullet holes a la Warhol. Each style is a sarcastic commentary or homage to previous avant-garde experiments.
The artwork illustrating the book includes photos of three-dimensional assemblages and sculptures using the elements of distillery, wine bottles and graffiti. Nudes are also a favorite subject, along with assemblages of found objects. For example, a found chair gets a human wooden leg from a shoemaker, and a can of paint with dry flowers is called Seated Nude with Grecian Urn. Each of the works is different and has elements of appropriation from other artists, especially surrealists and pop artists.

    SALINGER, J.D. Franny and Zooey.
Boston: Little, Brown (1961). The third book by the author of The Catcher in the Rye , two novellas that originally appeared in The New Yorker . Previous owner name; fine in a very good, slightly rubbed and price-clipped dust jacket worn at the spine extremities. An attractive copy of an increasingly scarce book. SALTER, James. Dusk . Berkeley: North Point, 1988. A collection of stories, his first; winner of the PEN Faulkner Award. Fine in a fine dust jacket, and signed by the author . Salter's memoir, Burning the Days , was published to great critical acclaim a couple of years ago. He has the reputation of being a "writer's writer" one who is admired even more by his peers than by the public at large or even the critics. This title bears a short, glowing blurb from John Irving. SAYLES, John. Union Dues.

    58. William S Burroughs And Ralph Steadman - The IZINE
In the video made of his encounter with ralph steadman last year 1995, he is bentalmost double, inching gingerly across the floor like a novice on skates.
    http://www.thei.aust.com/bill/burralph.html
WITH HIS narrow wound of a mouth, his greying complexion and cruel, reptilian eyes, William S Burroughs has looked old for 40 years; like Samuel Beckett, it is hard to imagine a time when he was frisky. But now he really is old; the author of Junkie, Queer and Naked Lunch, recovered heroin addict, gun nut, fellow of the American Academy of Letters, Burroughs was 82 last month. In the video made of his encounter with Ralph Steadman last year [1995], he is bent almost double, inching gingerly across the floor like a novice on skates.
When the journalist Duncan Fallowell met him 14 years ago, he wrote that Burroughs' "gait is a combination of shuffle and hop". Now the hop's all gone, only the shuffle remains. But menace will be the last thing that deserts him. The actor Robert Stephens, it is said, practically died flirting; Burroughs' final rictus will be a homicidal sneer. He moves with the help of a stick - but out of the handle he pulls a foot-long blade. God knows what he keeps in the tubing of his wheelchair.
So there is a certain correctedness in the notion, conceived by Steadman, that a collaboration with Burroughs should take the form of Burroughs blowing holes in Steadman's work with his collection of guns. Burroughs readily fell in with the idea; the prints were made, featuring etchings of Burroughs' face either side of a target painted by Steadman; the holes were duly blown, details of firearms conscientiously noted, and finally signatures added - Steadman's lurching nervously from lowercase to upper and back again, Burroughs' a neat, prim hand. Now the work, called
