Vampire$ (the title does end with a dollar sign) is about a tightly knit group of professional vampire killers. They may say they're in it for the money, but their death-defying bravado and warm male friendships are as intense as those in any soldier-hero epic. The irrepressible, foul-mouthed, hard-drinkin' Jack Crowdecked out in high-tech chain mail and wielding a fearsome crossbowis the leader of the bunch. He's the sort of man who screams obscenities at the pope, and then (after a lot of booze) weeps in the pontiff's lap over the horrors he's witnessed.

"If you liked Starship Troopers and never read Armor then you're missing out. While the plot may seem similar (lots of battles against bug like creatures) the action is so riviting that you'll have a hard time putting this book down. This isn't a book that'll deliver a deep message for the masses, rather it is a great story about a man who joins the army to forget his past. Action scenes are detailed and well scripted. While it might not rank as one of the best books of all time, this is definitely a book you should read."

John Steakley,
Vampire$
(Roc, 1992)
What if vampires were real? Would you imagine their arch-nemesis to be a lone, petite woman with a collection of knives and guns, some serious emotional/sexual issues and an obsession with Nike sneakers? Or a young, superpowered girl with a tan and a gang of wacky pals? Probably not. If vampires were real, their foes would more likely resemble the team led by hard-drinking, foul-mouthed Jack Crow in John Steakley's Vampire$ . Crow leads a team of church-sponsored mercenaries who employ an impressive arsenal and expert combat training to tackle fiends who, at the peak of their strength, are nearly impossible to stop by any means. Once you accept the leap of faith necessary to embrace a world with real vampires, Steakley's book slips neatly into the realm of believability. People die. Plans fail. Warriors who fight hard and live on the edge of death will also play hard. Leaders adopt bravado when necessary, yet suffer inconsolable guilt when their people fall in the line of duty. And the public is unwilling to believe that vampires exist. The media won't report on vampire-related incidents, believing them to fall more into purview of the tabloid journalism even when entire towns bear witness to the reality of the problem.

by John Steakley A Book Review Rating: 6
Enjoyable overall, but not greatly so. Have patience with it. Format: Novel Genre: Science Fiction Published: Dates read: Unknown to 2001-09-06 Summary: Two connected stories, one about a soldier in super-armor fighting against hordes of alien bugs, another about a legendary space pirate taking part in one last mission. My opinion of this book, like the book itself, is divided. About half of this book recounts the battle experiences of a man named Felix, who attacks enormous killer bugs (similar to the bugs in Heinlein's Starship Troopers ) while encased in an incredibly powerful full-body suit (the eponymous "armor"). Felix's story is not by any stretch of the imagination a character-driven one: Felix's character barely changes through most of it, and instead Steakley spends most of his time describing battle after battle in which Felix takes part. However, Steakley's battle descriptions are excellent. Felix doesn't have the most stunning variety of attack moves, but Steakley rarely descends to the ridiculous synonyms for "hit," "dodge," and "shoot" that lesser authors often use. And the final battle scene is a virtuoso set piece in prose. Even more impressively, Steakley is able to evoke a believable sense of weariness and detachment in Felix despite describing, often in visceral detail, the skirmishes Felix engages in. And Steakley doesn't shy away from death, eitherI don't think a single character that Steakley introduces in the first chapter survives, except for Felix himself.

http://www.gigamesh.com/criticalibros/vampiros.html

John Steakley's 'Vampire$'
First published in 1990, this source reference for John Carpenter's massive new film 'Vampires' tells the story of a Vatican-backed group of hired assassins with a very particular prey. Led by the determined and practical Jack Crow, the team use modern technology alongside the more traditional stakes to rid American towns of their infestations of the undead.
When most of his crew are wiped out in a savage and unexpected attack, Crow's nerve starts to fail him. An old fighting comrade from years back, a pacifistic drug smuggler called Felix, reluctantly joins them, and as the tension mounts it becomes obvious that Felix is taking over the role of leader. Felix is a dangerous liability to the group at times, but also its keenest asset: although his natural instinct is to use the threat of gunfire as a deterrent rather than start shooting indiscriminately, he becomes a deadly sharp shooter with an ability to kill like an automaton when the need is most pressing. As Crow's fear and weakness grows, so the team come to rely more heavily on the reluctant hero Felix for support.
Also along for the ride is a young rich girl with a dark past, Davette. Posing as a reporter doing a piece for a Texas paper on the vampire slaying outfit, she travels with them on their hunts, gradually becoming ever more deeply embroiled with their strangely pathological outlook on life, and falling hopelessly in love with the wretched Felix. When the revelation comes that she has had a past involvement with vampires, that she had been under the spell of one until managing to escape them, Felix starts to return her love. Now on the run from the vampire who ruined her, Davette is the unwitting link between the vamps and the hunters right up to the book's startling dénouement.

The first 100 pages or so of this book reminded me a lot of STARSHIP TROOPERS and THE FOREVER WAR. It was a gritty, realistic look at war from the point of view of a grunt soldier. Very vivid, very compelling, and very exciting. The first person narration gives us a look inside Felix's head and how he reacts to what is going on around him.
Then the author throws us for a loop. The second part starts out in a prison with the narrator (this part is again in first person) trying to escape. I was really confused as to how Felix went from being on a battlefield to being stuck in prison. It takes a while for it to be revealed that this isn't Felix. It's Jack Crow, an interstellar pirate. The majority of the rest of the book revolves around him. I was kind of disappointed in this. I was much more interested in Felix's story. Not that Jack Crow isn't an interesting character. I eventually got into him. I would have liked, though, to get a clearer picture of his history. Mr. Steakley left it kind of fuzzy.
Despite this disappointment of missing out on Felix's continuing exploits, I was still absorbed in this book. Mr. Steakley's storytelling abilities carry this book. His characters are vivid, his dialogue is (usually) great, and the interaction between characters, while sometimes confusing, is entertaining to read. The middle third of the book was a bit slow, but the excitement of the beginning and end more than made up for it. If you're looking for a good sci-fi read, this will definitely satisfy you.
