Gertrude Stein - brief biography [adapted from an entry in the (c) Encyclopedia Britannica (b. Feb. 3, 1874, Allegheny, Pa., U.S.d. July 27, 1946, Paris), avant-garde American writer, eccentric, and self-styled genius, whose Paris home was a salon for the leading artists and writers of the period between World Wars I and II. Stein spent her infancy in Vienna and Paris and her girlhood in Oakland, Calif. At Radcliffe College she studied psychology with the philosopher William James. After further study at Johns Hopkins medical school she went to Paris, where she was able to live by private means. From 1903 to 1912 she lived with her brother Leo, who became an accomplished art critic; thereafter she lived with her lifelong companion Alice B. Toklas (1877-1967). Her first published book, Three Lives (1909), the stories of three working-class women, has been called a minor masterpiece. The Making of Americans, a long composition written in 1906-08 but not published until 1925, was too convoluted and obscure for general readers, for whom she remained essentially the author of such lines as "A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose." Her only book to reach a wide public was The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1933), actually Stein's own autobiography. The performance in the United States of her Four Saints in Three Acts (1934), which the composer Virgil Thomson had made into an opera, led to a triumphal American lecture tour in 1934-35. Thomson also wrote the music for her second opera, The Mother of Us All (published 1947), based on the life of feminist Susan B. Anthony.

Any new changes or additions made to this links page now require a link exchange/link trade, i.e. mutual links only. If your site has a link to one of my pages and/or one of my books, or if you find a dead link on this page, please tell me Never ask me for help with your research, homework, proofreading, revising, etc., no matter how big the emergency. Usually, I’ll link back to you here or on my most appropriate page, as long as you leave up your link to me. See duanesimolke.com for links to my other pages, and for information about my books. Though I originally envisioned this page as listing all Gertrude Stein pages that appear on the net, I eventually found that task overwhelming, especially since URL’s keep changing. However, I can manage it by narrowing updates in the way I mention above. Link trades benefit both involved sites, and they help webmasters keep their sites up-to-date. I also suggest searching Google and All Consuming.Net

Rules of the game.
An international epitaph is to be created in honour of Gertrude Stein, who died on 27 July 1946.
The subject prescribed for this international epitaph is the last (No. LXXXIII) of the Stanzas in meditation ("Why am I if I am..."). We are looking for textual, audio and grafic elaborations of the theme.
The texts should, like the prescribed stanza, consist of fourteen lines/verses. The last verse must read: These stanzas are done. It is left to the individual author wether he/she follow the structure of the prescribed stanza by Gertrude Stein (diminishing/increasing length of line, rhymes, etc.) or react to other texts of the Epitaph in free association. The text should at any event be written in the author's mother tongue and if possible accompanied by the rough translation or a free version in German.
The audio creations must for technical reasons be noted in letters. Graphic contributions should not exceed to format 30 x 30 cm.

On The Road With Betty Jean Steinshouer
Since 1988, Betty Jean Steinshouer has toured the country with one-woman shows portraying such authors as Willa Cather, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Flannery O'Connor, Gertrude Stein, Laura Ingalls Wilder and various homeless characters. Her two newest characters are Sarah Orne Jewett and Harriet Beecher Stowe. She also offers, by popular demand, combinations of her characters on themes such as friendship, rivers, Ernest Hemingway, war, racism, slavery, and Florida. The work on homelessness that she began in Colorado in 1993 has grown into two different groups of six characters each, "Comfort Me With Apples: Homeless in America" and more recently, "To A God Unknown: Steinbeck's Homeless Ones." Call 727/826-6217 for booking information or e-mail below.
Betty Jean Steinshouer as Sarah Orne Jewett, who was called Maine's Master Smart Woman. Miss Jewett was Willa Cather's mentor and was famous in her own right for THE COUNTRY OF THE POINTED FIRS, which Cather once ranked along with THE SCARLET LETTER and HUCKLEBERRY FINN as American classics. Miss Jewett is often presented in company with Miss Cather, and also with the author who caused Miss Jewett herself to become a writer, Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe.

Boston Tech 'Salons' Create Deals and Dialog
Page 1 of 1
12:02 PM May. 19, 1997 PT With the decline of regional powerhouses Wang, Polaroid, and Digital Equipment Corp. in the late '80s, Boston's Route 128 seemed to be drifting off the map of new-media development. Despite MIT's heavyweight computer science department and Media Lab, Boston has always had "an inferiority complex," says Bob Metcalfe, InfoWorld columnist and vice president of technology for International Data Group. "No one in Silicon Valley worries about Boston." But if last week's MIT Entrepreneurship Competition is any indication, some people are working hard to change that status - starting in Metcalfe's own living room. The finalists in the competition , which doles out US$50,000 to three emerging start-up technology companies, were warmly welcomed into Metcalfe's six-story brownstone in Boston's exclusive Back Bay neighborhood for an extravagant dinner and drinks.
