Biography
Gertrude Stein
Writer USA Born 3 Feb 1874
Died 27 Jul 1946
Gertrude Stein, a writer of experimental prose, was one of the most original American Modernists. Born in Pennsylvania, she lived most of her life in Paris with her companion, Alice B Toklas. Experimental books like 'Three Lives' (1909), 'Tender Buttons' (1914), and 'The Making of Americans' (1925) established her reputation as an avant-garde stylist, and 'The Autobiography of Alice B Toklas' made her an international celebrity. As an experimental writer she has been an inspiration to countless novelists and poets in the 20th century, from Ernest Hemingway and Edith Sitwell to Jack Kerouac and Robert Duncan.

"What incomprehension of an epoch!" wrote André Salmon, in his condemnation of Gertrude Stein 's mémoire à clef, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas .[1] Stein got facts and dates wrong, misinterpreted events and art movements, insulted important members of the avant-garde. But was Gertrude Stein trying to "comprehend"with all the recovered, grasped, mastered and retrospectively supplemented historical plenitude the word impliesher early days in Paris?[2] Starting with its title, the Autobiography was a detective story, pitting the notion of an authoritative historical account (of which biography is one genre) against the facture of any such history. Indeed, who was the author, Toklas or Stein ? Narrated in a wandering, anecdotal style which mimicked Toklas' and propelled by the author's impressionistic recollections, its text was composed of memories and imitations which were inseparable from each other. In short, the Autobiography was, in the best sense of the word, a fake.[3] Stein's motive was not factual accuracy. If anything, she was subverting any such possibility: the portraitist was writing something more in the nature of caricatureas, indeed, any reconstruction, be it of persons or events, in some measure must be. "Let me recite what history teaches. History teaches."[4]
