Finality is death. Perfection is finality. Nothing is perfect. There are lumps in it. Originality does not consist in saying what no one has ever said before, but in saying exactly what you think yourself. Curiosity will conquer fear even more than bravery will. A secret is a weapon and a friend. Man is God's secret, Power is man's secret, Sex is woman's secret. Men come of age at sixty, women at fifteen.

Biographies:
James Stephens (1825-1901) Was the Irish leader of the Fenians. Born in Kilkenny, Ireland he became a city engineer on the Limerick an Waterford railway. He joined the Young Ireland movement and was wounded in an uprising in 1848. He fled to France and upon his return began to sort out possiblities of a new movement. Encouraged by the response of the people and aquaintences he started the Irish Revolutoinary Brotherhood, similar to the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He went to America in 1858 and 1864 to collect funds. Both times were largely successful. He promised his American associates, the Fenians, he would lead an uprising in 1865, but when schisms in the American movement delayed arms shippments he postponed action. He was arrested in 1865 but escaped to Paris and then later New York. The American Fenians denounced him as a traitor and an imposter so he fled back to Paris. Friends in Ireland helped him to return in 1886. Alfred Booker (1824-1871) Born in England, he was son to a Regular Baptist Clergyman. The Booker family moved to Hamilton, Canadian West where Alfred became a merchant and auctioneer before becoming involved in the military. In 1858 he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel of a volunteer force in Hamilton, and in 1865 appointed commander of the 13th Battalion. Booker is most famous for his command in the Battle of Ridgeway. He was to lead 480 young, ill-trained men to Stevensville where he would join forces with Lieutant-Colonel George Peacocke. However, Peacocke was delayed at Chippawa and Booker, forced to fight the prepared Fennians lead by O'Neill, lost. He retired from the Military in 1867 and reopened shop in Montreal.

News had come to him in Donegal that there were yet people in his own province who believed in gods that he did not approve of, and the gods that we do not approve of are treated scurvily, even by saintly men. He was told of a powerful gentleman who observed neither Saint's day nor Sunday. "A powerful person!" said Finnian. "All that," was the reply.

National Poet's Day
National Poetry Day (Oct 4th 2001) James Stephens (1882-1950). On National Poetry day I shall commemorate the work of Irish poet James Stephens by reading one of his poems over his newly discovered grave. The grave is in Kingsbury, London, in the graveyard of St Andrew’s Anglican Church NW9. I first got news of this through an article by Peter Beresford Ellis in The Irish Post and I was shocked that such a famous and popular Irish figure could so quickly be forgotten to the extent that his grave is overgrown and the tombstone broken and there is graffiti. I have begun the process of communicating with those with some degree of responsibilty and they in their turn have undertaken to renovate the grave and erect a memorial stone. The grave was discovered by a local resident who happens to be (like me) a Stephens fan. When I compiled THE POOLBEG BOOK OF IRISH POETRY FOR CHILDREN back in 1997 the work of James Stephens which is included there shone through. Here is my favourite poem of his, WHITE FIELDS, simple, lyrical, an air of foreboding maybe, a mystery

==a critical list with discussions==
This is a brief discussion of James Stephens and, of course, of some books by James Stephens.
This discussion and list does not necessarily include every book by Stephens; it includes those books that I both know and like. Just as with the author list itself, omission of a particular item may mean I didn't think highly enough of the omitted item, or it may simply mean that I have not yet sufficient familiarity with it. (In a very few cases, I have listed some books merely on the strength of my opinion of the author: all such books are clearly marked below, as throughout these lists, with a hash mark ( ) before the title so you know what's what.)
I don't pretend that this discussion is a deep analysis. My intent is no more than to give you a rough idea of what kinds of tales Stephens tells, how those tales are usually told, and what makes them and Stephens worthy; in sum, to help you rank Stephens (and the works by Stephens listed here) on your personal literary "to do" list.
