Warming to a Global Movement
Page 1 of 3 next
03:00 AM Dec. 24, 1998 PT In the mid-1980s, Bruce Sterling helped define the cyberpunk science-fiction movement. He edited the movement's zine ( Shaved Truth ), a collection of short stories ( Mirrorshades ), and wrote street-hip novels like Schizmatrix and The Artificial Kid Now Sterling hopes to earmark another cultural movement. Radicalized by what he sees as seriously disruptive weather patterns brought on by global warming, he calls his nascent movement Viridian Green. On 23 September, he sent out a statement called The Manifesto of January 3, 2000 over the influential Nettime list.

The manifesto posits that the best way to combat global warming is to ignore politics and to see it as an aesthetic design problem. Sterling challenges the design geniuses and culture hackers who've created the digital revolution to start a cultural movement that will view CO2-emitting designs as downright gauche, proffering alternative designs in their stead. Meanwhile, Sterling's new novel

Bruce Sterling's latest offering is a fantastical palimpsest of politics, conspiracy and satire Sure, it's 2001. However something is askew. No one seems to be shooting around in flying cars, and while the iMac is becoming ubiquitous, the HALs of this world remain in Marvin Minsky's dreams. The new century seems to have skittered away from the fantasies of the older generation of sci-fi writers. Instead, it would seem, we are awash with a strange stream of nostalgia, neo-mysticism and pseudo-religiosity. Arcane concepts lie hidden in the screenplay of The Matrix and metaphysics are the cornerstone of Being John Malkovitch And sci-fi itself? No doubt there is a mass of extraterrestrial travel abounding in the plethora of paperbacks out there somewhere. But three of the most influential writers of our times have come back to ground. In Neil Stephenson's

Bruce Sterling's renarks at Computers, Freedom and Privacy Conference IV, Chicago, Mar. 26, 1994, on whether or not threats to privacy posed by computerization are for real or not. Classic quote: "I've been asked to explain why I don't worry much about the topics of privacy threat raised by this panel. And I don't. One reason is that these scenarios seem to assume that there will be large, monolithic bureaucracies (of whatever character, political or economic) that are capable of harnessing computers for one-way surveillance of an unsuspecting populace. I've come to feel that computation just doesn't work that way. Being afraid of monolithic organizations especially when they have computers, is like being afraid of really big gorillas especially when they are on fire."

51. The Hacker Crackdown The Civil Libertarians
Part four of the electronic release of bruce sterling's book detailing how illicit copies of Apple source code led to the FBI visiting Barlow and triggered the founding of the EFF.

PART FOUR: THE CIVIL LIBERTARIANS
The story of the Hacker Crackdown, as we have followed it thus far, has been technological, subcultural, criminal and legal. The story of the Civil Libertarians, though it partakes of all those other aspects, is profoundly and thoroughly *political.* In 1990, the obscure, long-simmering struggle over the ownership and nature of cyberspace became loudly and irretrievably public. People from some of the oddest corners of American society suddenly found themselves public figures. Some of these people found this situation much more than they had ever bargained for. They backpedalled, and tried to retreat back to the mandarin obscurity of their cozy subcultural niches. This was generally to prove a mistake. But the civil libertarians seized the day in 1990. They found themselves organizing, propagandizing, podium- pounding, persuading, touring, negotiating, posing for publicity photos, submitting to interviews, squinting in the limelight as they tried a tentative, but growingly sophisticated, buck-and-wing upon the public stage. It's not hard to see why the civil libertarians should have this competitive advantage.

Chatting with Bruce Sterling at LoneStarCon 2
By Thomas Myer
August 29, 1997
Bruce Sterling
"History never repeats itself, but it does kind of rhyme." Bruce Sterling can be called an author, a journalist, an editor, a critic or many other things. He is adept at them all. He is the author of Involution Ocean The Artificial Kid Schismatrix Islands in the Net Heavy Weather (1994), and Holy Fire Bruce Sterling Tribute Site
Bruce Sterling agreed to chat with me about cyberpunk, the 19th Century, government-sponsored orgies during the Roman Empire, and technology in general all this after a two-hour session in which he talked in front of two dozen fans about his new novel, Holy Fire from Bantam Spectra. Undaunted, he was in high spirits, making incredible leaps and connections but what more can you expect from a Hugo winner?
You're probably going to go to your grave, and folks will identify you as part of the first wave of cyberpunk writers, no matter what you've done after that period. How do you see Holy Fire do you consider it cyberpunk? How would you answer critics who claim it is just "another cyberpunk novel"?
