PLUS Star Tech Death to America
In distant 1990, when the US fought Space War I in the Persian Gulf, its military was a lumbering Cold War juggernaut. During the months it took to move the Army into those Saudi Arabian bases, fighter pilots were already hard at work. Using detailed Landsat images to locate targets fixed by hastily deployed global positioning satellites, US air power methodically devastated the Iraqi army. When American tanks finally rumbled across the wasteland west of Kuwait, they found nothing much left to crush. Dazed Iraqis were surrendering to unmanned drones. In the Second Space War, the Yugoslav army did pretty well for itself, given the circumstances. Some of its air defenses survived the conflict, while the US wasted many bombs on fake tanks. Yugo soldiers hunkered in camouflaged bunkers, waiting and hoping for US ground troops. Vengeance would be sweet: lots of bloody ambushes and dogged mountain fighting. That's the way war had always been in the Balkans. But the bombs never stopped falling. American troops never marched. They didn't have to. For that, thanks go to Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Boeing, and Raytheon. These chrome-plated corporations build rockets, satellites, and sensors. At the behest of US Space Command and its sister offices in the Army, Navy, and Air Force, they supply the hardware that lets US forces listen to whispers across continents, anticipate enemy attacks, and strike any spot on Earth at will.

-The Spook
"The Spook" by Bruce Sterling; 1983 There's a universe of potential, Lindsay, think of that. No rules, no limits. History is a form of science fiction . The future is history that hasn't happened yet. History is the sensibility of one time , assessing another time, that it cannot possibly know. The Internet is the natural test-bed for this fast-moving, fast-vanishing, start-up society. Because the native technology of the coming years is not the 19th century "machine" or the 20th century "product." It is the 21st century "gizmo." A gizmo is a device with so many features and so many promises that it can never be mastered within its own useful lifetime. A gizmo is flimsy, cheap, colorful, friendly, intriguing, easily disposable, and unlikely to harm the user. The gizmos purpose is not to efficiently perform some function or effectively provide some service. A gizmo exists to snag the users

Information Wants to Be Worthless

Bruce Sterling takes stock of the situation.

I can't wait for this next South by Southwest Interactive. I don't know why they still call it that, though. They used to call it "Multimedia." Now even "Interactive" sounds corny. If I were them, I'd rename the event every year. This year in particular demands a major image rethink. How about "SXSW Cyberspace Terrorist Paranoia"? "SXSW Axis of Evil Global InfoWar"? Might we arrange open-house tours of Enron and Global Crossing, perhaps using chartered buses? Why, there's just so much to discuss! SXSW Interactive has suffered surprisingly little from the collapse of dot-communism. The core demographic at SXSW is the woolly-eyed digital creative, a species of creature from way before the Boom. Those characters were never anywhere near the big IPOs. They were all fueled by sheer subcultural coolness. Back in the Neolithic dawn of the Internet, you see, the academics who built it used to beat the living crap out of a businessman the very moment they saw him. One peep of commercial spam on their stainless not-for-profit network, and the net-gods would reach right into your router and just throttle you, like an egg-sucking dog. Businessmen would take one look at that impossible Internet code, and they'd pick up their gray flannels and flee headlong to CompuServe and Prodigy. You young folks these days, you probably don't even remember "CompuServe." They croaked from being way too compu-servile.

Bruce Sterling is one of the original cyberpunk authors, and the unofficial spokesperson for the genre. He writes a critical column for Science Fiction Eye and a popular-science column for The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Bruce Sterling is born in 1954 in Texas, United States. Sterling's first novel, Involution Ocean , appeared in 1977 when he was just twenty-three. A flawed but fascinating first novel, it created the dreadful planet of Nullaqua with considerable skill, surviving an introduction by Harlan Ellison designed to kill off a dozen lesser writers from bashfulness.

The Difference Engine
William Gibson + Bruce Sterling
Bantam Books 1991 A book review by Danny Yee The two leading "cyberpunk" authors have joined together to produce an alternate history novel. The premise is that Charles Babbage did build his Analytical Engine and that a steam-driven information age has developed as a result - and Britain is under the control of capitalists and intellectuals under the leadership of none other than Lord Byron. The Difference Engine is the kind of political/underworld/espionage thriller one would expect from the authors, but while it was a fun read and had some cute ideas it didn't really live up to my expectations. In particular both the beginning and the ending seemed flat. 1 April 1992
