Les Neiges d'Antan

Listen to audio of Gerald Stern reading "Les Neiges d'Antan" here Where art thou now, thou Ruth whose husband in the snow
creased thy head with a tire iron, thou who wore
ridiculous hats when they were the rage and loved exotic cultures and dances such as the Haitian Fling and the Portuguese Locomotive , my wife hated because of her snooty attitude or that her hair was swept up and her nose was aquiline and her two boys raised hell with our green apples the Sunday they came to visit, she in whose Mercury we parked for over a year, once every night in front of her mother's house in one of the slightly genteel streets that led into the park the other side downhill really from the merry-go-round, or where is Nancy or who is Nancy Ezra Pound located in between his racial diatribes and dry lyrics three times at least in the Cantos but tell me where that snow is now and tell me— as in where is Tangerine and where is Flora how old Ruth is and where does she live and does she still dance the Locomotive and does she bundle.

(Gerald Stern reading this piece from
'The Power of the Word' with Bill Moyers
MP3 format - 1.1 MB.) What I was doing there with my white teeth exposed
like that on the side of the road I don't know,
and I don't know why I lay beside the sewer
so that lover of dead things could come back
with his pencil sharpened and his piece of white paper. I was there for a good two hours whistling dirges, shrieking a little, terrifying hearts with my whimpering cries before I died by pulling the one leg up and stiffening. There is a look we have with the hair of the chin curled in mid-air, there is a look with the belly stopped in the midst of its greed. The lover of dead things stoops to feel me, his hand is shaking. I know his mouth is open and his glasses are slipping. I think his pencil must be jerking and the terror of smell - and sight - is overtaking him;

From Paradise Poems by gerald stern, published by the University ofPittsburgh Press. Copyright © 1982,1983,1984 by gerald stern.
http://www.haplessdilettante.com/dancing.html
In all those rotten shops, in all this broken furniture
and wrinkled ties and baseball trophies and coffee pots
I have never seen a post-war Philco
with the automatic eye
nor heard Ravel's 'Bolero' the way I did
in 1945 in that tiny living room
on Beechwood Boulevard, nor danced as I did
then, my knives all flashing, my hair all streaming,
my mother red with laughter, my father cupping
his left hand under his armpit, doing the dance
of old Ukraine, the sound of his skin half drum, half fart, the world at last a meadow, the three of us whirling and singing, the three of us screaming and falling, as if we were dying, as if we could never stop - in 1945 - in Pittsburgh, beautiful filthy Pittsburgh, home of the evil Mellons, 5,000 miles away from the other dancing - in Poland and Germany - oh God of mercy, oh wild God. About Gerald Stern
At the time of the Fourth Annual Des Moines National Poetry Festival in 1993, where Gerald Stern was one of three featured speakers with W.S.Merwin and Lucille Clifton, he described his work, in the following way: "If I had to explain my art I would talk about it in terms of staking out a place that no one else wanted, because it was not noticed, because it was abandoned or overlooked." If this is the case, it is nonetheless true that he has made that place known. C.K. Williams has a different description of the place Stern inhabits: "Whatever the reasons, Stern is one of those rare poetic souls who makes it almost impossible to remember what our world was like before his poetry came to exalt it." Gerald Stern has been a member of the University of Iowa Writer's Workshop in Iowa City since 1982. His work has received numerous awards including the Patterson Poetry Prize, the PEN Award, the Jerome J. Shestack Poetry Prize, the Melville Caine Award from the Poetry Society of America, The Lamont Poetry Prize and the Fellowship of the Academy of American Poets for Distinguished Lifetime Service, among others. He has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and three National Endowment for the Arts grants.

Critics frequently compare Stern's works to those of literary great Walt Whitman, for their ability to elevate the everyday in crisp imagery and with fresh vitality. Stern became established as a poet relatively late in life. "It was not until I was in my 40's," he said. When asked why, he responded, "I was too arrogant. I was too critical of my own work."
