Sancho's Correspondence with Laurence Sterne
In the summer of 1766, Ignatius Sancho wrote to the popular novelist Laurence Sterne (author of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy and A Sentimental Journey ) asking him to write something opposing slavery. Sancho's inspiration was a passage he read in Sterne's sermons, which had recently appeared as The Sermons of Mr Yorick . Sterne replied to Sancho and kept copies of the letters. Sterne died in 1768 and his correspondence, including this exchange with Sancho, was published in 1775. Here, I provide the full text both of Sancho's letter and Sterne's reply as well as the 'tender tale' Sterne mentions to Sancho, which appeared in Tristram Shandy , Vol. 4, Ch. 65.
1. Sancho to Sterne
REVEREND SIR,
It would be an insult on your humanity (or perhaps look like it) to apologize for the liberty I am taking. - I am one of those people whom the vulgar and illiberal call "Negurs."

2. Sterne to Sancho
Coxwould near York July 27. 1766
There is a strange coincidence, Sancho, in the little events (as well as in the great ones) of this world: for I had been writing a tender tale of the sorrows of a friendless poor negro - girl, and my eyes had scarse done smarting with it, when your Letter of recommendation in behalf of so many of her brethren and sisters, came to me - but why

Men tire themselves in pursuit of rest. A large volume of adventures may be grasped within this little span of life, by him who interests his heart in everything. Nothing is so perfectly amusing as a total change of ideas. The history of a soldier's wound beguiles the pain of it. Of all the cants which are canted in this canting worldthough the cant of hypocrites may be the worstthe cant of criticism is the most tormenting! There are worse occupations in this world than feeling a woman's pulse.

Laurence Sterne
A Life
IAN CAMPBELL ROSS
From country parson to international celebritythe famous, and infamous, life of Laurence Sterne
"I wrote to be famous, not to be fed," said Laurence Sterne upon publication of his comic masterpiece, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman . And indeed, almost overnight, Sterne achieved fame beyond his wildest dreams. In this fascinating biography, Ian Campbell Ross shows how the great comic author combined a genius for self-promotion with a clear grasp of the nascent business of publishing to soar across the cultural and social firmament of mid-18th century England. Ross begins with Sterne's childhood in Yorkshire and follows the young gentleman's progress to Cambridge and then to the Church of England and a humdrum rural vicarage. He describes his unhappy marriage to a woman who suffered a nervous breakdown and at one time believed herself to be the Queen of Bohemia, as well as his many scandalous liaisons with other women, experiences that helped inform his Rabelaisian novel. But the heart of the book is Ross's account of the country parson's sudden rise to prominence, swept up in a frenzy of celebrity excessive even by today's standards. Ross draws us into the glamorous world of literary Londona world of power and privilege ruled by fashionable legislators of tasteshowing how Sterne marketed himself, as well as his novel, by seeking favors from influential critics, famous authors, and even leading statesmen.

The bust of the English novelist Laurence Sterne (1713-68), which Nollekens worked on in Rome in 1776, follows classical models in being limited to the depiction of head and bare shoulders. Although this echoes the idealized portrait type of early Imperial Rome,, the fine modeling of the narrow face makes the portrait very lifelike. The impression is reinforced by the the dimensional treatment of the eyes. The iris is not just suggested and left blind in the eyeball, as in Houden; Nollekens hollows out the pupil except for a small point that shines in the light. This late-antique treatment was further developed by sculptors of the Baroque, and Nollekens uses it almost without exception in order to provide his bust with a lifelike expression. Laurence Sterne, A Sentimental Journey (1768), pp. 72-3
The bird in his cage pursued me into my room; I sat down close to my table, and leaning my head upon my hand, I begun to figure to myself the miseries of confinement. I was in a right frame for it, and so I gave full scope to my imagination. I was going to begin with the millions of my fellow creatures born to no inheritance but slavery; but finding, however affecting the picture was, that I could not bring it near me, and that the multitude of sad groups in it did but distract me. I took a single captive, and having first shut him up in his dungeon, I then look'd through the twilight of his grated door to take his picture. I beheld his body half wasted away with long expectation and confinement, and felt what kind of sickness of the heart it was which arises from hope deferr'd. Upon looking nearer I saw him pale and feverish: in thirty years the western breeze had not fan n'd his bloodhe had seen no sun, no moon in all that timenor had the voice of a friend or kinsman breathed through the latticehis children But here my heart began to bleedand I was forced to go on with another part of the portrait.

However, the writing of Sterne is recognized as influencing modern writing from Joyce and Woolf onwards more than any of the other eighteenth century novelists. In the last twenty years Sterne's work has become a focus for a flourishing body of work and significant debates in many new and developing areas of literary theory which include gender, sexuality, postmodernism, and deconstruction. Sterne's major novel 'Tristram Shandy' is regarded as deploying a range of 'post-modern literary devices' expected to be found in late twentieth century work rather than in work written in the 1700s.

I wish either my father or my mother, or indeed both of them, as they were in duty both equally bound to it, had minded what they were about when they begot me; had they duly considered how much depended upon what they were then doing;that not only the production of a rational Being was concerned in it, but that possibly the happy formation and temperature of his body, perhaps his genius and the very cast of his mind;and, for aught they knew to the contrary, even the fortunes of his whole house might take their turn from the humours and dispositions which were then uppermost;Had they duly weighed and considered all this, and proceeded accordingly,I am verily persuaded that I should have made a quite different figure in the world, from that in which the reader is likely to see me. Laurence Sterne
English humorist, was the son of Roger Sterne, an English officer, and great-grandson of an archbishop of York. Nearly all our information about the first forty-six years of his life before he became famous as the author of Tristram Shandy
Sutton was Sterne's residence for twenty uneventful years. He kept up an intimacy which had begun at Cambridge with John Hall-Stevenson (1718 - 1785), a witty and accomplished epicurean, owner of Skelton Hall ("Crazy Castle") in the Cleveland district of Yorkshire. Skelton Hall is nearly 40 m. from Sutton, but Sterne, in spite of his double duties, seems to have been a frequent visitor there, and to have found in his not too strait-laced friend a highly congenial companion. Sterne is said to have never formally become a member of the circle of gay squires and clerics at Skelton known as the "Demoniacks"; but no doubt he shared their festivities. Stevenson's various occasional sallies in verse and prose - his Fables for Grown Gentlemen (1761 - 1770), his

Sterne
The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman"
