The profusion of images in his poetry made no sense to me, but they were beautiful... in the same way, I have been breathing life and not been able to make complete sense of it. Some things were made to be enjoyed, not analysed, and Stevens's poetry is at the top of this list for me. Stevens lived from 1879-1955. He was an insurance lawyer, and never a "professional" poet. All the more amazing then are his creations, composed during his afternoon lunch breaks and walks. He wrote of "Bright & Blue Birds & the Gala Sun" and "The Pure Good of Theory". His poetry is sensual yet it seems the epitome of intellectuality at the same time, simply because it is so ungraspable. All his life, I believe Stevens struggled with the tension between reality and fiction he is often branded a fiercely anti-social poet, because issues of racism, war and depression seldom take explicit form in his poetry. But he is no less a social poet for this omission, which is not really an omission.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) Critically regarded as one of the most significant American poets of the 20th century. Stevens largely ignored the literary world and he did not receive widespread recognition until the publication of his COLLECTED POEMS (1954). In his work Stevens explored inside a profound philosophical framework the dualism between concrete reality and the human imagination. For most of his adult life, Stevens pursued contrasting careers as a insurance executive and a poet. "The poem must resist the intelligence / Almost successfully," Stevens wrote in 1949 in 'Man Carrying Thing.' Wallace Stevens was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, as the son of Garrett Barcalow Stevens, a prosperous country lawyer. His mother's family, the Zellers, was of Dutch origin; she taught at school. Stevens attended the Reading Boys' High School, and enrolled in 1893 at Harvard College. During this period Stevens began to write for the Harvand Advocate

WALLACE STEVENS,
UNDERSTANDING THE TROPICAL NATURE OF CARIBBEAN FLORIDA.
by moe armstrong
From travel brochures and newspaper advertisements, Florida is seen
as a vacationers paradise. Wallace Stevens discovered the deeper meaning
of what is Florida's tropical nature. The poems he would write would be
through the awakened eye of his Caribbean experience. The Florida of the
Caribbean becomes a tropical light which shines through his characters,
seasides and landscapes. "If America represents an extreme of realism, the
savagely colourful and maternally fecund tropics represent a primitivist
extreme" (Patke, p. 22). From Florida, he learned about the drift of beaches and the oceans. He discovered the overwhelming strength of the natural tropical elements. The ability of Wallace Stevens to leave his New England and start traveling to Florida opened and shaped his lifetime of perceptions. For many of the residents of the Caribbean, nature and natural forces shape a macro-religious system which is based on an earth religion, Santeria (Gonzalez-Wippler, p. 4). The Catholic church in the Caribbean would be

Wallace Stevens reads his own poetry. Stevens was born in 1879, and these recordings were made shortly before his death in 1955. Although he published poetry as early as 1914, Stevens did not receive widespread recognition until the publication of his collected poems in 1954, for which he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Stevens' poems focus on the sound of language, on obscure vocabulary, and on imaginative images.

Every morning Stevens walked two miles from his home at 118 Westerly Terrace to his office at 690 Asylum Avenue. In the evening he walked back. He occupied himself on this pedestrian commute by composing poetry in his head. Even on weekends Stevens, who never learned to drive, enjoyed long walks in the city. We hope you will enjoy following the poet's walk. To really walk the walk, take the Asylum Avenue exit off of Rt 84.

Add to a Notebook Wallace Stevens Wallace Stevens was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, on October 2, 1879. He attended Harvard as an undergraduate and earned a law degree from New York Law School. Admitted to the U.S. Bar in 1904, Stevens found employment at the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Co. in Connecticut, of which he became vice president in 1934. In November 1914, Harriet Monroe included four of his poems in a special wartime issue of Poetry , and Stevens began to establish an identity for himself outside the world of law and business. His first book of poems, Harmonium , published in 1923, exhibited the influence of both the English Romantics and the French symbolists, an inclination to aesthetic philosophy, and a wholly original style and sensibility: exotic, whimsical, infused with the light and color of an Impressionist painting. More than any other modern poet, Stevens was concerned with the transformative power of the imagination. Composing poems on his way to and from the office and in the evenings, Stevens continued to spend his days behind a desk at the office, and led a quiet, uneventful life. Though now considered one of the major American poets of the century, he did not receive widespread recognition until the publication of his Collected Poems , just a year before his death.
