some of stevens' poems really sing to me, others i can make no sense of at all. although stevens himself wrote that 'a poem need not have a meaning and like most things is nature often does not have'.

    Stevens, Wallace
One of the most important American poets of the twentieth century, Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) was also a successful insurance executive, so it is not surprising that his work questions the relation between "imagination" and "reality," placing him in the tradition of William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, as well as Robert Frost, Marianne Moore, Hart Crane, and John Ashbery. Supremely among American poets, Stevens made his poetry an occasion for theorizing about poetry: it is deeply involved in the celebrated and lamented "turn" to theory in the recent history of criticism. Theories of language and literature, politics and letters, are resolutely in Plato , for example, the tendency to semantic dispersal and undecidability that attends even "normal" language acts. In addition, the problem of metaphor, central to Stevens's poetic (how do we know reality when the language we use to name reality forever mediates us from it?), suggests also why Stevens's work is important for literary theory.
In "The Noble Rider and the Sound of Words" Stevens calls upon the sound of words to function as his way toward newness, toward a poetry capable of creating the balance between imagination and reality. He writes that only the poet can find the perfection lodged in the sound of words, finding "all the truth that we shall ever experience" (

    Short Bio
Wallace Stevens was born in Reading, PA on October 2, 1879. He attended Harvard and was president of the student literary magazine. He became a lawyer in 1904 and worked in several different legal jobs. He married Elsie Moll in 1909, a woman he had met in Reading 5 years earlier, and had one daughter, Holly, in 1924. He started working for the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Insurance company in 1916, and he was promoted to vice-president around 1934.
Stevens remained separated from the literary world, but he wrote like a man absorbed in the culture. He published his first book of poems when he was 44 (1923), even though he had published poetry in periodicals beginning in 1914. He lived a very normal, white-collar life, and kept working until his death on August 2, 1955. Poems
Wallace Stevens has always intrigued me because of his ability to lead the lives of two people - an executive and a poet. Stevens lived in Hartford and composed poetry while walking to work. In his writing, he expressed that poetry must be substituted for religion when religion is not fulfilling. The poet manufactures the domain to which others turn for imagination. The poem I include here is my favorite for its simplicity and detail, its form and sensations. Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird I

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
The sheer difficulty of apprehending meaning from some of Stevens's poems turns many students away. Yet Stevens is one of the most apt voices to speak about the perfection, and the perfectibility, of the poem the supreme fiction in the writer's, and the reader's, lives. If students can read Stevens's poems well, they will probably be able to read anything in the text. The elusiveness of meaning is one key difficulty: Stevens's valiant attempts to avoid paraphrase, to lose himself in brilliant language, to slide into repetition and assonantal patterns without warning. His work demands complete concentration, and complete sympathy, from his readers. Most students cannot give poetry either of these tributes without some preparation. Close reading, usually aloud, helps. The well-known Stevens language magic has to be experienced, and since the poems are difficult, asking students to work on them alone, in isolation, is not the best tactic. Beginning with the poems by Stevens might make reading T. S. Eliot
