He is best remembered as the author of Dracula (1897), a horror story recounting the adventures of the vampire Count Dracula. The fame of the leading character was furthered by popular stage and film adaptations of the novel. Stoker's other novels include The Jewel of Seven Stars (1904). For 27 years he was manager for the actor Sir Henry Irving. See R. T. McNally and Radu Florescu, In Search of Dracula (1972); Richard Dalby, Bram Stoker: A Bibliography of First Editions

DRACULA'S GUEST by Bram Stoker NOTE: DRACULA'S GUEST was excised from the original DRACULA MSS by his publisher because of the length of the original book MSS. It was published as a short story in 1914, two years after Stoker's death. Enjoy! NEW WAVE PUBLISHERS 2103 N. LIBERTY STREET PORTLAND OR 97217-4971 (503) 286-5577 When we started for our drive the sun was shining brightly on Munich, and the air was full of the joyousness of early summer. Just as we were about to depart, Herr Delbruck (the maitre d'hotel of the Quatre Saisons, where I was staying) came down bareheaded to the carriage and, after wishing me a pleasant drive, said to the coachman, still holding his hand on the handle of the carriage door, "Remember you are back by nightfall. The sky looks bright but there is a shiver in the north wind that says there may be a sudden storm. But I am sure you will not be late." Here he smiled and added,"for you know what night it is." Johann answered with an emphatic, "Ja, mein Herr," and, touching his hat, drove off quickly. When we had cleared the town, I said, after signalling to him to stop:

    About the Stoker Awards
Each year, the Horror Writer's Association presents the Bram Stoker Awards for Superior Achievement , named in honor of Bram Stoker, author of the seminal horror work, Dracula. The Stoker Awards were instituted immediately after the organization's incorporation in 1987. While many members, including HWA's first President, Dean Koontz, had reservations about awards for writing since the point of HWA was for writers to cooperate for their mutual benefit, not to compete against one another the majority of members heavily favored presenting awards, both to recognize outstanding work in the horror field and to publicize HWA's activities. To ameliorate the competitive nature of awards, the Stokers are given "for superior achievement," not for "best of the year," and the rules are deliberately designed to make ties fairly probable. The first awards were presented in 1988 (for works published in 1987), and they have been presented every year since. The award itself is an eight-inch replica of a fanciful haunted house, designed specifically for HWA by sculptor Steven Kirk. The door of the house opens to reveal a brass plaque engraved with the name of the winning work and its author. The Stoker Awards, like the Oscars, are non-juried awards. Any work of Horror first published in the English language may be considered for a Stoker during the year of its publication. The HWA membership at large recommends worthy works for consideration. A preliminary ballot is compiled using a formula based on recommendations. Two rounds of voting by our Active members determine first the finalists, and then the winners. The winners are announced and the awards presented at a gala banquet held in conjunction with HWA's annual conference, usually in June.

Dr. Jeanne Keyes Youngson, president and founder of the BRAM STOKER MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION, first became aware of Stoker as an individual in his own right when she read Harry Ludlam's A Biography of Dracula: The Life Story of Bram Stoker in 1964.
Indeed, until the publication of Ludlam's book in '62, little was known of Stoker except that he had worked at the Lyceum Theatre in London as Acting Manager for the renowned stage performer, Henry Irving.
Ludlam's biography surely set Youngson's subconscious working overtime. In 1965 while on a trip to Romania, she conceived the idea of starting a Dracula Fan Club in honor of Stoker's Count, Vlad Dracula the Impaler, and of course Stoker himself.

Search on this Page: When the time for his examination drew near Malcolm Malcolmson made up his mind to go somewhere to read by himself. He feared the attractions of the seaside, and also he feared completely rural isolation, for of old he knew its harms, and so he determined to find some unpretentious little town where there would be nothing to distract him. He refrained from asking suggestions from any of his friends, for he argued that each would recommend some place of which he had knowledge, and where he had already acquaintances. As Malcolmson wished to avoid friends he had no wish to encumber himself with the attention of friends' friends, and so he determined to look out for a place for himself. He packed a portmanteau with some clothes and all the books he required, and then took ticket for the first name on the local time-table which he did not know.
From the post-office he got the name of the agent, who was rarely surprised at the application to rent a part of the old house. Mr. Carnford, the local lawyer and agent, was a genial old gentleman, and frankly confessed his delight at anyone being willing to live in the house.
"To tell you the truth," said he, "I should be only too happy, on behalf of the owners, to let anyone have the house rent free for a term of years if only to accustom the people here to see it inhabited. It has been so long empty that some kind of absurd prejudice has grown up about it, and this can be best put down by its occupation - if only," he added with a sly glance at Malcolmson, "by a scholar like yourself, who wants its quiet for a time."

"I was afraid to raise my eyelids, but looked out and saw perfectly under the lashes. The girl went on her knees, and bent over me, simply gloating. There was a deliberate voluptuousness which was both thrilling and repulsive, and as she arched her neck she actually licked her lips like an animal, till I could see in the moonlight the moisture shining on the scarlet lips and on the red tongue as it lapped the white sharp teeth I could feel the soft, shivering touch of the lips on the super sensitive skin of my throat, and the hard dents of two sharp teeth, just touching and pausing there. I closed my eyes in languorous ecstasy and waited, waited with beating heart." ( Dracula
Abraham "Bram" Stoker was born near Dublin in 1847 where he spent his first seven years more often than not confined to his bed due to a mysterious and unexplained disorder. Making reparations for this period, by the time he went to Trinity College in Dublin he had become an adept sportsman and was commended as University Athlete before gaining honours in Mathematics. He was then employed in Dublin as a civil servant for eight years until 1878 when he became manager and actor at the Lyceum theatre under the direction of Henry Irving. He would later write Personal Reminiscences of Henry Irving (1906) but, as you are doubtless aware, this is not the tome for which he is remembered.
