Symphony 1 »The Gothic« At Victoria Hall, Hanley, 21 May 1978 - David J Brown It is difficult, if not impossible, to write dispassionately about this extraordinary event, and perhaps one should not try. Havergal Brian's Gothic Symphony was given its third complete performance on Sunday 21 May [1978] by over 700 singers and players, all but a dozen or so of them amateurs, in the hall where, more than 80 years before, the composer had first heard the work which might be called the 'model' for the Gothic , Beethoven's ninth symphony, and where several of his own works were performed before the end of this century's first decade. It cannot be said too often and too insistently that the Gothic T his is not to say that the performance was without flaw - far from it. It could be said that the bigger and more complex, difficult and unfamiliar a work is, the longer 'baseline' it possesses upon which may be assembled all the criteria for judging the performance, each with its degrees from total success to total failure. These criteria need not be entirely confined to purely musical factors; human ones, social and psychological, are concerned as well. Does an impeccable performance, played to a tiny or indifferent audience, count in sum as a success or failure? In this light, the

Contact Argus Adrian Dunca Department of Mathematics Univ of Pittsburgh 301 Thackeray Hall Pittsburgh PA 15213 Research: I am doing a Ph.D in Computational Mathematics under the guidance of Dr.W.Layton . I work on problems related to finite element and finite difference methods , parallel algorithms to solve partial differential equations arising in engineering and physics ,large eddy simulation for turbulent flow and mesh adaptivity for flow problems.
One mathematical aspect of this area is existence and uniqueness of the continuous solution, existence and uniqueness of its finite element approximation ,error analysis and error estimators ,stability of solution of modelling equations arising in flow problems and appropriate boundary conditions for these models.
From a computational point of view my expertize and interest consist of implementation and testing in a parallel or sequential environment of various numerical schemes to solve partial differential equations and especially numerical schemes to simulate turbulent flow. I was born in the house my father built..... NOT! The rest is hysteria, I mean history!... well, you know... When I was four years old, somebody gave me a toy piano and soon I started imitating tunes from the radio and TV without much effort, to the amusement of one of our neighbors who was a psychologist, her husband a pediatrician and their son my best playing buddy. Life went on and by age 12 I had developed an interest in science by myself (since none of my parents had a college degree or was scientifically inclined). I asked for every Gilbert science kit that was for sale. I remember getting the chemistry set, the biology set and my favorite, the TELESCOPE Soon I was showing the interested parties in the neighborhood the phases of Mercury and of Venus , the moons of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn But I also loved to listen to the radio... "Twistin' The Night Away" by Sam Cooke was the theme of a nightly radio pop music program which title translated to English means "Here With The Young" (Aquí Con La Juventud). Of course, everybody was young then! (Except parents!)

R Throws: R 2003 AGE: 21 on 1/23/03 The Skinny: 2003 Outlook: Stokes will begin the season in either Class A Jupiter or AA Carolina, depending on where the Marlins place Adrian Gonzalez. Stokes was originally going to be converted to left field, but they'll both stay at first base . . . for now. Team/League/Level G AB R H HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG Kane County (Midwest - A) 2. Miguel Cabrera, 3B
    HT: WT: Bats:
R Throws: R 2003 AGE: 20 on 4/18/03 The Skinny: Cabrera received a $1.9 million bonus just six weeks after his sixteenth birthday, a record payout for a Venezuelan player. The Marlins converted him from shortstop to third base before the 2002 season, and he led the Advanced-A Jupiter team in RBIs as a 19-year old. Cabrera has an enormously quick bat, and his league-leading 43 doubles should convert into more home runs once he escapes from the pitching-friendly Florida State League. He still needs to learn how to recognize pitches and look for one to drive, and he often struggles when facing lefties. He has average speed, but isn't afraid to steal the occasional base. He's more suited to third base than shortstop, and has a plus arm and solid fundamentals. 2003 Outlook: Cabrera is the youngest of the under-21 prospects taking the first four slots on this list. He has an extra year of experience over most high school draftees, and will start the season at AA Carolina.
