VALPARAISO POETRY REVIEW
Contemporary Poetry and Poetics

Four Decades of Mark Strand's Poetry

~E DWARD B YRNE
W EATHER W ATCH: M ARK S TRAND'S T HE W EATHER OF W ORDS
…how telling it is, and how appropriate, that in introducing an anthology
of the "best American poetry" of 1991 Strand also should have narrated
his own beginnings as a poet decades earlier. After all, a close examination
of Strand's poetry over those decades will uncover a number of poems that reflect
his ardor as a reader and a writer of poetry, works that continue to mirror the reverence he maintains for the art of poetry and the act of writing poems. … it's not that poetry reveals more about the world — it doesn't — but it reveals more about our interactions with the world than our other modes of expression. And it doesn't reveal more about ourselves alone in isolation, but rather it reveals that mix of self and other, self and surrounding, where the world ends and we begin, where we end and the world begins.

Borges: Influence and References
Mark Strand By James Hoff Poet and essayist, Mark Strand was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada, but raised and educated primarily in the United States and South America. He is the author of ten books of poetry, including Reasons for Moving The Story of our Lives , and Dark Harbor , as well as a critical analysis of the works of the American painter, Edward Hopper. He has also edited a number of anthologies, including the seminal Another Republic: 17 European and South American Writers , edited with the poet Charles Simic. Also known as a translator, Strand has rendered many Spanish language poets into English verse, and was one of the contributing translators to the newly published Selected Poems , published by Viking press in 1999. His influences are many, and include the Brazilian poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Wallace Stevens, and of course, Jorge Luis Borges.
Strand's style is a wonderful mixture of psychological aberration and nightmarish dream state, punctuated by a stoic, sometimes aloof resignation by the poet. To stare at nothing is to learn by heart
what all of us will be swept into, and baring oneself

The Quartet is named after Antonie Brentano, whom many scholars believe to have been Beethoven's mysterious "Immortal Beloved," and to whom he wrote his famous love confession. The Brentano String Quartet has the distinction of being named to three major awards, winning the first Cleveland Quartet Award, the 1995 Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the 10th Annual Martin E. Segal Award. For their first appearance in Great Britain at Wigmore Hall, the Brentano was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for the most outstanding chamber music debut for 1997. The Brentano String Quartet has appeared with pianist Mitsuko Uchida at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, at the Library of Congress, and at Lincoln Center, and has collaborated with Jessye Norman in her 1998 Carnegie Hall recital. In the fall of 1998, the Brentano String Quartet performed to great acclaim in various venues across Australia, including the prestigious Sydney Opera House, and was featured in a "Live From Lincoln Center" broadcast.

Jorie Graham's work stands apart from the bulk of contemporary poetry. "Ferociously scorning the comforts of the conventional personal lyric," wrote April Bernard in The New York Times Book Review , "Graham addresses fundamental questions—is there a God? what is human will? what does it mean to be mortal?" J.D. McClatchy comments that "Graham writes with metaphysical flair and emotional power. . . . here is depth, not just the sensation of depth." She is the author of eight collections of poetry, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Dream of the Unified Field: Selected Poems 1974-1994 The Errancy , and her most recent, Swarm . Her awards include a MacArthur Foundation "genius" fellowship. About Mark Strand, Deborah Garrison wrote in The New York Times Book Review that "There are a handful of contemporary poets whom we can consider only by gazing upward. . . . Mark Strand is undeniably one of these luminaries." Author of ten books of poems, including

Stranded:
Poet Mark Strand Preaches Political Indifference at UCI
Mark Strand is one of the most talented poets currently writing, producing beautiful and evocative lines like: Soon the house, with its shades
drawn closed, will send
small carpets of lampglow
into the haze and the bay
will begin its loud heaving and the pines, frayed finials climbing the hill, will seem to graze the dim cinders of heaven.
He’s been greatly and justly lauded for his skill; he has served as the nation’s poet laureate and received a Pulitzer Prize for poetry. But to paraphrase another, greater poet, there are more things in heaven and Earth than are evident in Strand’s philosophy. Ostensibly lecturing at UC Irvine on “the future of poetry,” Strand the first recipient of the university’s Nichols Award for Humanities managed the January 27 talk without locating any of the issues confronting contemporary poetry. Indeed, what Strand delivered that evening was Poetry 101, a series of short if mildly amusing parables that attempted to define poetry.

In a Dark Time ...
The Eye Begins to See October 26, 2001 You've Got Mail I started reading Mark Strand's poetry many years ago after I took one of his classes when he was a visiting professor at the University of Washington. Today his poetry is quite popular and several of his poems can be found on the web at sites like: A small collection of Mark Strand poems or Mark Strand (Bold Type Magazine) I'm not sure I would have appreciated his poetry as much if I had taken his class as an undergraduate, but having just returned from Vietnam, I found his dark, surrealistic poems particularly moving.
When I started teaching poetry several years later, I always handed my students a copy of Eating Poetry as an introduction to my course to dispel any notions that poetry was merely sentimental verses written by lovesick romantics.
The ongoing anthrax letter scare reminded me of the following poem.
The Mailman

It is midnight.
He comes up the walk
and knocks at the door.

JHU loses Mark Strand
University of Chicago woos former U.S. Poet Laureate away from Hopkins
by Michael Sachdev
News-Letter Staff Stanley Wooh is a disappointed poet. The 19-year-old sophomore from Staten Island, New York has known for many years that he would like to study poetry. He wrote poetry in high school. He came to Johns Hopkins as a Writing Seminars major specializing in poetry, and has not changed his course of study at all in the past year and a half. And like most poetry majors at Johns Hopkins, he has looked forward to the opportunity to learn from professor Mark Strand, 1990 Poet-Laureate of the United States. But Stanley won't get that opportunity. Mark Strand quit. Strand, who has published nine books of poetry and was poetry editor at The New Republic, has taught poetry workshops to Hopkins graduate and undergraduate students since 1994. He will begin teaching literature for the Committee of Social Thought at the University of Chicago on March 30, 1998. "He got a tremendous deal from the University of Chicago," said Jean McGarry, chairperson of the Writing Seminars. "It was an offer he couldn't refuse." According to Fiction Professor Stephen Dixon, the offer involves less teaching and better salary and benefits.

This is always the case. Wherever I am I am what is missing. When I walk I part the air and always the air moves in to fill the spaces where my body's been. We all have reasons for moving. I move to keep things whole. Mark Strand This sparse, philosophical free verse poem is from Mark Strand's 1964 "Sleeping With One Eye Open". Strand teaches at the University of Chicago, and is the Poet Laureate of the U.S. (though born a Canadian... another import we've acquired and made our own) I can turn the opening 3 lines around and around in my head for ages at a time, playing with the meanings, exploring the depth of the idea. These and the last 2 lines of that stanza are practically koans, and worthy of meditation. The second stanza seems just a short explanation for the sake of those with too little time for navel gazing, but the last stanza locks the poem's appeal to a drifter like me. A friend of mine was showing me Strand's 'Eating Poetry' in a compilation, and I opened to this one and fell in love with his talent at expressing such grand thoughts in so few beautiful words. gaurav@

Mark Martin, Rapala Angler of the Year, on what life is really like as a professional, and promotional, fisherman by Mark Strand for the Rapala Professional Advisory Team. For years, people who knew of his local fishing prowess had begged Mark to take them fishing. Reluctant to give up his spots and leery of their intentions, he had mostly avoided the requests. But now, with a taste of getting paid to do what he wanted to do anyway, Mark couldn't help but draw up plans for a guiding service that would replace his days of punching a time card.
