Where'd the photo go?
I was born in Exeter, New Hampshire. My father, a university professor, was very successful in getting guest professorships and grant fellowships, so until I was 14, I never lived in the same house or attended the same school for more than two years in a row (people often ask me, when I tell them this, if I come from a military family). In addition to a number of U.S. states, I've lived in Ireland, England, and Germany.
I graduated from Vassar College with a degree in Comparative Religion. This didn't make it easy for me to find a conventional job (in fact, after a while I began to tell interviewers I'd majored in History, because I got so tired of explaining that no, I wasn't taking time off from a religious vocation), but it did satisfy my fascination with world belief systems, an interest that enduringly informs my writing.
Since then, I've supported my writing habit through a variety of (mostly poorly paid) positions, including store clerk, telemarketer, receptionist, secretary, research assistant, house painter, odd jobs person, and even financial manager of a not-for-profit agency. In 1997 I left the world of salaried work behind to write full-time, a decision which has made me a good deal poorer but a great deal happier.
I wrote my first novel

Whys and Hows
The publishing market has changed a lot over the past decade or two. There are more books being published now than ever before, and commercial publishers' publicity budgets are both stretched and shrinking.
In this climate of increased competition and attention to the bottom line, it's usually only the Stephen Kings and Patricia Cornwells, or new authors the publisher specifically decides to target for success, who receive the perks of planned promotional campaigns: author tours, full-page ads in industry journals, arranged interviews and appearances, publisher-created websites, standalone displays at bookstores, etc.
This may seem counter-intuitive. After all, the Big Names practically sell themselveswouldn't it make more sense for publishers to put most of their publicity money into unknowns? Unfortunately, that's not the way it works. Commercial publishers prefer to place the bulk of their promotion budgets behind hot prospects and sure things, and to allow new or less popular authors to find their own way (or not, as the case may be).
For writers who've selected a non-commercial publishing alternativeself-publication, e-publication, publication through a print-on-demand companymarketing issues are even more pressing. Even the newest or least profitable commercially-published author can rely on distribution and sales support, as well as some level of advertising (even if it's a single group ad in a genre magazine), mailings of advance reading copies to reviewers (prestigious industry review journals like

For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much - the wheel, New York, wars and so on - whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the same reasons. (Douglas Adams) Tuesday, February 25th 2003 - 08:15:07 AM

Fiction Factor - What prompted you to create Writer Beware?
Victoria Strauss - When I first went online about five years ago, I didn't have much idea of how common literary fraud really is. My own path to publication was pretty smoothI never ran across any questionable practices at all, and I'm afraid I thought my experience was typical. I was shocked to discover, through my participation in various online writers' forums, how many writers have been defrauded by disreputable agents, publishers, book doctors, and others. I became fascinated enough, and then angry enough, to do quite a bit of research on the subject.
Around this time I was checking out the "call for volunteers" section of the website of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (of which I'm a member), and saw a request for a volunteer to create a section of the website that would warn about literary scams. It seemed a perfect match between my interest and SFWA's need. That's how Writer Beware came about.
FF - Can you tell us a little more about the site and about the SFWA Writing Scam Committee?

http://www.eventhorizon.com/samples/eos/conv/bios/strauss.html
Victoria Strauss set out to be a writer at age seventeen. Following that impulse in the way few young people do, she delayed the start of college to write a book. Strauss finished the novel in a year, "the only time I've ever managed to do that," and then went on to school. For the next ten years she hardly wrote but, as luck would have it, an agent took a shine to that early book, a historical novel set in the Middle Ages, and managed to sell it. The product of equal parts pluck and luck, The Lady of Rhuddesmere set Strauss on a path she would continue to follow for years to come. Her historical bent, and interest in the medieval period combined with a fascination for mythology to produce her latest novel, The Arm of the Stone. This impressive work of fantasy uses traditional archetypes "the quest, the fabulous object, the child with the great destiny" and takes them in directions they do not usually go. "Although the hero starts out on a quest to regain the fabulous object for his family and does eventually wind up taking it back," Strauss explains, "it isn't for the reasons with which he started out." In Strauss' mind, fantasy deals more concretely, perhaps, than any other literary form, with archetypal figures, the same figures that appear in religions, fairy tales, and myths. "Fantasy is more than just escapist," she thinks. "Fantasy taps into some very deep consciousness in people, and speaks to deep and universal themes.

Victoria Strauss: Garden of the Stone
Avon Eos (paperback), ISBN 0-380-79752-6
The Garden of the Stone returns readers to Mindwork, a world where Handpower (technology) is not only feared, but also hunted down and wiped out with bloodthirsty persistence. Mindpower (magic) drives this world Mindpower and the complete and total rule of the Guardians, a corrupt theocracy that once horded the Stone (a living entity of enormous power that could've righted the imbalance of technology and magic and healed two worlds back into one). However, the Stone disappeared, stolen by a prophesied hero who ignored his destiny and vanished. Fancy that. Aren't heroes supposed to nobly carry on, whether they want to or not? The book opens with Cariad, an empath and professional assassin, stalking a Roundhead. The Roundheads, Gestapo-like enforcers of the Guardians, seek not only to find the stolen Stone and its thief, but also to stamp out any resistance to the Guardian's totalitarian rule. Cariad discovers the location of a Gate from the Roundhead news that could help the resistance faction that she fights for. New orders await Cariad at her foster mother's hideout. An undercover member of the resistance disappeared. Did Konstant go over to the enemy? Are the resistance's efforts compromised? Resistance leaders order Cariad to infiltrate the Fortress and locate Konstant. Then she has two choices: rescue him or execute him.

Geraint, the bastard son of the wealthy and vengeful Baron of Wallestoke, is sent into service at the remote estate of Rhuddesmere. He is warmly received by Rhuddesmere's Lady and her family, and treated with a respect and kindness he has never known. Seldom is a title so striking in its suspense and simultaneously so thought-provoking as THE LADY OF RHUDDESMERE...If one were to choose only one novel as leisure reading material, this would rate high on the list of "best" choices.
