Born Edward Hamilton Waldo in 1918, he changed his name to Theodore Sturgeon in his early teens. A review by Victoria Strauss
Advertisement document.write(''); One of the key figures of science fiction's so-called Golden Age, Theodore Sturgeon stands out from his contemporaries both in the literary quality of his writing and his focus on creating strong, complex characters as well as fast-paced plots. He has been an influence on writers as diverse as Samuel Delany and Ray Bradbury, and serves as a continuing source of inspiration to SF's younger generation. His work fell out of print following his death in 1985, but recent years have seen complete reissues of his short story collections, and a number of reprintings of his novels including this one, from Millennium's SF Masterworks series. Sturgeon is best-known as a short story writer, and

The Arm of the Stone by Victoria Strauss review by Chad Cottle
When I picked up a copy of The Arm of the Stone , I had no idea who Victoria Strauss was. In the past I have been a little reluctant to pick up new books by new authors. Recently I picked up two novels from authors I had never read before and couldn't get through fifty pages before I lost interest and put the book down. Not so with this book. The idea of the story was intriguing. It had to do with MindPower and HandPower . In the society, HandPower is strictly guarded by the Book of Limits, an elaborate list of detailed instructions on the creation of all tools. Technological advances, you see, are considered evil. The main character's name is Bron. When his older brother Selwyn creates a better hoe, one that will help his mother in the garden, he finds himself in violation of the Book of Limits. The ensuing problems this creates and how Bron deals with it I will not reveal here. The Arm of the Stone is an organization of men and women who go about the countryside enforcing the Book of Limits. When the Arm of the Stone comes to deal with Bron's brother, you can imagine the chaos and termoil it creates for this family. As I read this wonderful novel, I was mesmerized by the dialoge, the characterization, the way all the people in this rich tale came together, how their personalities were so richly developed. This is exactly the kind of story I want to write. This is exactly the kind of story I long to find. It is a perfect novel. I could not resist sending Victoria and e-mail to tell her how much I appreciated this fine novel. We swapped a few e-mails back and forth and in so doing I learned, to my immense delight, that Victoria is just completing volume two. And she told me it is a long book. I love long boks.

Writer's of the Future Contest L. Ron Hubbard review by Chad Cottle
I had the distinct honor of attending the Annual Award Ceremonies for the winners of the L. Ron Hubbard Writer's of the Future Contest this year. It was in Hollywood, just a few blocks from the famed Chinese Theater. It is hard to describe how I felt. It was simply magnificent. There were such notable writers there as Dave Wolverton, Tim Powers, Jerry Pournelle, and Kevin J. Anderson. Those are only a few. I did not know until I went to the ceremony who the winners were. I was very surprised to find that my friend David Masters was a winner. That is not his real name, but I will not reveal that here. He was the man who actually introduced me to my wife and helped us financially during our first year of marriage. That was almost six years ago. He was struggling to be a writer then, and now he is officially a published writer. It took a lot of time and effort, and I tip my hat to him. During the award ceremony, the most recent volume of the contest was unveiled. For the first time, it was put on sale. I did, of course, purchase a copy. I have read the last three volumes of the contest and found each of them to be of extremely high quality. Each story represents the best of the up and coming writers. I have not once been disappointed with a story I have found in each of these three volume. I hope to one day, very soon, be one of the winners. I have submitted to the contest seven times, now. Without going into detail about the stories in this volume, I just want to say that if you are serious about being a writer, you need to read these books and submit your stories to the contest. It truly is the proving ground for making it in the field.

Strauss, Victoria. 1999. The Garden of the Stone. New York: Avon Eos. Reviewed 25 December 1999 It would be convenient to begin this review like so many reviews in A Certain Publishing Industry Periodical would (yes, I know it was reviewed There, but I haven't read it). Something like this: "This continuation of Strauss's fantasy series picks up where she left off at the end of The Arm of the Stone Much to Garden 's benefit, that description bears little resemblance to the book. Rather than follow the stereotyped Interminable Fantasy Series structure, in which each book begins a few seconds after the end of the previous one, Garden is actually a real stand-alone story. This is entirely consistent with the thematic core of this series: the nature and creation of myth and faith. In other words, this is not a book to read with one's brain off. It's not pretentious (such as, say, Rushdie's The Ground Beneath Her Feet ); neither is it turgid, or filled with more characters than one can count conveniently. It does not continue to focus on the same character or characters as did its predecessor(s), ignoring the necessary shifts of viewpoint over long periods of time. That's enough. I've said what

    Researching an Agent's Track Record
    by
    Victoria Strauss
Researching an agent's track record (and you do want to research it: when querying an agent, you want to be absolutely sure s/he really does have success selling books to commercial publishers) may seem like a daunting task. But there are a number of resources that can help you.
First, try a good print market guide. Some of these guides provide very terse agent listings, and don't include details of recently sold projects. But some, such as Jeff Herman's Writer's Guide to Book Editors, Publishers, and Literary Agents , provide extensive listingswhere the agent is willing to give them, of course.
Next, do a websearch on the agent's name in a comprehensive search engine such as Google . This can turn up a lot of information, including the agent's website if there is one (a reputable agent's website will nearly always include information about recent salesif you don't see this, be wary), news items about the agent and projects s/he's sold, writers' conferences s/he has attended (often conference websites will include bios of attendees), interviews s/he's conducted, etc.
A check in Google Groups (a searchable database of Usenet messages) is also a good idea: many writers post questions about agents to Usenet, and the answers they receive can be informative.
