Shawnee tribal leader Jim Great Elk Waters calls readers to affirm the rich possibilities of this great land we call America. Despite his people's tragic history, they have held to the truths and traditions that make them Shawnee: "We are the total sum of all our ancestors." Click here for more on View from the Medicine Lodge In The Garden of the Stone , Victoria Strauss expands upon the themes of technology, spirituality and human nature she took up in The Arm of the Stone . This story of parallel worlds divided by their choices to use either mindpower or handpower moves in unexpected and satisfying new directions. Strauss introduces intriguing new characters and details the sometimes painful enlightenment of familiar ones. Bron, the man whom secret prophecy said would restore a balance between mindpower and handpower, vanished decades ago with the Stone a powerful talisman through which the unfathomable energy and wholeness of the world can be approached by people with the Gift. Yet though the Stone is gone, much on the surface of the world of mindpower remains the same. The changes in the world since the loss of the Stone have been insidious. The theocracy of the Fortress still rules, maintaining an elaborate charade to keep the awareness of the Stone's loss from the masses. But constructions built with Gifts are beginning to fail across the world, and not even the ultra-conservative Reddened faction of the Arm of the Stone can stop the apparent unbinding of mindpower.

Shawnee tribal leader Jim Great Elk Waters calls readers to affirm the rich possibilities of this great land we call America. Despite his people's tragic history, they have held to the truths and traditions that make them Shawnee: "We are the total sum of all our ancestors." Click here for more on View from the Medicine Lodge What is the ultimate price we pay for the ever-increasing levels of technology we attain? In the world of Victoria Strauss's The Arm of the Stone , the cost of unfettered handpower is division from and loss of the most powerful and mystical parts of our minds. Over a millenium ago, humanity nearly destroyed itself in its headlong rush to develop new and better technologies. While most people embraced physical science and the improvements it wrought, a few clung steadfastly to their belief in the importance of mindpower. As the ways of science became the ways of society at large, the tension between adherents of technology and believers in the mind tightened to the breaking point. People, families, even whole communities vanished overnight; the world was literally divided. The technophilic half annihilated itself in a conflagration of its own making; the technophobic half survived. The inhabitants of this otherwhere have retained Gifts that might have been called magical or supernatural in the world they left behind. They have kept alive, too, a violent opposition to rampant technological advancement. There are Limits, in this world ruled by the power of thought, strict rules that prevent another sundering of existence. Here, the Gifted keepers of the Limits seek and root out all Violations. They rule by the will of the Stone, that which holds and at the same time simply

Bush that if he plunges ahead into a war with Iraq, he will have squandered the last opportunity to avert an even more grave military confrontation on the Korean Peninsula. In combination, such an Iraq-Korea crisis would likely be catalogued, by future historians, as the beginning of a global war, even more horrible than the "Clash of Civilizations" conflict promoted by Dr. Bernard Lewis and the "war party" inside Bush's own Administration. Agreeing with warnings by former Defense Secretary William Perry, delivered at a March 5 Senate Democratic Leadership briefing, LaRouche evaluated the depth of the Korea mess: "Yes, there are problems. The problems were created by the present Administration's attempts to abrogate the [KEDO, Korea Economic Development Organization] agreement. Now—because of the Iraq war—North Korea, for its own reasons, is reacting as if it assumed that there is no good faith on the part of the United States, and that a war against Iraq would simply be a precursor of an all-out attack on North Korea.
