MILTON'S ELEMENTS
By Cordelia Strube Coach House Press, $18.95 paper
review
by DONNA LYPCHUK
There are not many writers around who can write as precisely or vividly about modern urban life as Cordelia Strube. With her second novel, Milton's Elements, the Toronto-based writer has proven once again that when it comes to sketching the contemporary conundrums, "less is more." Strube has honed the spare, understated style she introduced with her 1994 novel, Alex And Zee, investigating complexities of character that evolve when a person finds herself trapped by circumstance without, as one critic put it, "pyrotechnics or labored images." She can conjure up a picture of contemporary society in a few finely tuned sentences. The optionless individual in Milton's Elements is a character called Milton who becomes depressed after a TV set falls off a bureau and kills his baby daughter. Milton is angry, but like most people in this society, he really doesn't know how to deal with it, and finds himself indulging in Sylvester Stallone-type fantasies about killing people. When his wife starts seeing another man, he hits her, she leaves and Milton is left with the responsibility of caring for his dysfunctional family: a brother, Leonard, who is dying of AIDS; his mean, disabled mother; his people-pleasing sister; and another drug-abusing nympho of a sister who molests his mentally disabled friend.

Animal Harm
TEACHING PIGS TO SING By Cordelia Strube HarperCollins, $20 cloth As I opened this book and noticed that the title is taken from a T-shirt slogan, I began to have vague misgivings. The further I read, the more tangible they became. The hero of this book, indeed its only character, is Rita. It tells of her trials and tribulations as a single mum, of how everything in her life seems to go wrong, how she is surrounded by malevolent busybodies, religious fanatics, deformed beggars, the insensible and the incontinent, noisy neighbors, thieves and pedophiles. Rita, a self-confessed hater of humanity, caring only about her son, Max, begins to resent him when he shows signs of developing an independent personality and especially any resemblance to his hated and absent father. This individual appears suddenly while Rita is in hospital having a nasty and painful operation. He lives in a hostel, scratches himself all the time and never takes a bath. Things go from bad to worse for Rita when Max is whisked away and sodomized while his half-wit grandfather is buying lottery tickets. Then Rita's brother, religious and self-loathing, lies down in front of a train. Her father recovers his wits long enough to identify the body. Rita then decides to let Nolan, Max's father, take a role in his parenting so long as he rethinks his personal hygiene and keeps away from her. Rita has her hands full as a scriptwriter for corporate videos promoting orthotics.

Review of 'Dr. Kalbfleisch and the Chicken Restaurant' from the Montreal Mirror.Category Arts Literature Authors Novelists strube, cordelia...... cordelia strube produces more twisted domestic comedy. Dr. Kalbfleisch TheChicken Restaurant by cordelia strube, Harper Collins, pb, 258pp, $20.
http://www.montrealmirror.com/ARCHIVES/1997/101697/book.html
Natural born chicken by JULIET WATERS After I'd finished reading We should have sympathy for him. Kalbfleisch is a concentration camp survivor whose parents did not survive. But there's nothing noble about this complacent, mean, cheap man. It's not so much that he's tyrannicaldeep down he's a pretty apathetic tyrant. In fact, he doesn't seem to really care about anything beyond why Beth, the waitress with the nice breasts, doesn't smile enough. He's proof that surviving tragedy is no guarantee of character. On the other hand, Raymond, who manages Chez Simon, is proof that the human spirit can survive a lot. The chicken restaurant isn't Auschwitz, but it's still a pretty soul-corroding place. There's something strangely archetypal about Dr. Kalbfleisch. I say strangely, because there isn't much room for symbolism in the hyper-realist world that Strube creates. But in the existential microcosm of Chez Simon, Dr. Kalbfleisch could be a stand-in for the Almighty Disinterested Creator, a god who invented free will as a way of ultimately avoiding responsibility. It's been four years since I called Strube's first novel

Bah humbug! by JULIET WATERS The Barking Dog is not the novel for everyone during this holiday season. I found it Christmasey, but I do Christmas differently than most.
As the mob lines up for the latest feel-good movie, happy to plunge into the market of denial, I sit alone on dark December afternoons with a feel-bad novel. I like to work up just the right bad mood beforehand so that I'll be grateful for even the slightest bit of happiness on December 25. And nobody brings on that mood better than Cordelia Strube.
After her last novel, Dr. Kabfleish and the Chicken Restaurant, about Raymond, a passive restaurant manager who goes looking for his birth mother, I didn't think Strube could write a darker dysfunctional family novel. She took an overdone, trite scenario and turned it into an endlessly complex hyper-realistic nightmare. Raymond's mother turns out to be a white-trash horror show, while his father remains unknown. He could have been one of a couple of guys she was dating, or a ski-masked rapist who was hiding in her cupboard. As Raymond gets to know his long-lost twin brother, the odds start to favour the ski-masked guy.
Could there exist a family that would make Raymond feel better about his own on Christmas? Probably not, but the Pentlands of The Barking Dog come pretty close.

Cordelia Strube Cordelia Strube, novelist and playwright, is renowned for her acerbic with and dark, comic insight — so much that one critic put forward that "Strubian" should describe a literary style. Her 1994 debut was shortlisted for the WH Smith/Books in Canada First Novel Award, and her third novel, Teaching Pigs to Sing The Barking Dog , follows the story of Greer, a woman with breast cancer, struggling to find redemption and hope for her teenaged son, a somnambulant murderer. A story of madness, murder and cancer, The Barking Dog is riveting, provocative and mordantly funny. Praise from Reviewers Enquire About Rights

Praise for Cordelia Strube The Barking Dog "Her portraits of characters caught in urban angst are riddled with laugh-out loud humour . . . Strube's rueful insistence on contemplating human darkness is tempered by a certain wistfulness, a yearning for something finer, a flicker of hope that is never quite extinguished . . . a book that crackles with anger, righteousness and a strange kind of passion for living. Strube's mandate has always been to unsettle, not merely entertain, and in The Barking Dog she has succeeded admirably."
The Edmonton Journal " The Barking Dog absolutely must go down in the canons of literature as a great tragedy. There is more truth in this novel than in so many others, not truth with a capital "T" but the kind of truth that would make a lot of miserable folks comfortable and a lot of comfortable folks less miserable, when their luck eventually catches up with them."
The Kitchener-Waterloo Record "Cordelia Strube has written a poignant social document of our times with her portrait of one woman's love of her son and her fight against breast cancer and the medical profession. Like the American writer David Mamet, Strube is witty and spellbinding in her exploration of cancer and its victims as a dark metaphor for what's wrong with modern culture. Her story is memorable."

Trying to Find Out What Happens with Cordelia Strube
by Patrick Rengger Cordelia Strube is a curious woman. Which is not to say that she is strange or surprising, or at least not only. She is curious about things. It's why she writes - and why she writes the way she does. "I want to find out what happens," says the 36-year-old author, "and I like to ask questions," which makes the task of interviewing her somewhat different, since she asks as many questions as she answers. The Governor General's Award for fiction nominee and author of "Teaching Pigs to Sing" and, most recently, "Dr. Kalbfleisch and the Chicken Restaurant" did not, however, start out as a writer, but an actress. And those roots are evident in the writers she cites as influences on her own work, such as Edward Albee, David Mamet and Harold Pinter. They are writers who, like her, use a spare, pared-down style of writing, or as Strube puts it, "They are big in using not many words, but the words are key." They are also all famous for the sinuous strength of their dialogue, a feature of Strube's own work that is often regarded as her most powerful element. The conversations in her books crackle with biting insight as her characters struggle to survive in the world she creates for them.

At the top of her form, Canada's preeminent writer of new urban fiction brings forth her most powerful novel to date. Cordelia Strube conjures up a haunting, yet mordantly funny tale of murder, madness and cancer. Greer Pentland, a forty-something realtor, is battling breast cancer while struggling to find redemption and hope for her teenaged son, Sam, who is on trial for the vicious murder of two senior citizens, a crime allegedly committed while he was sleepwalking. Despite the difficulties that Greer faces, including an ex-husband who wants to sell the house that she and her son live in, this is a riveting, provocative and humorous novel. Strube's searing indictment of the medical profession and our media-saturated culture is masterfully fused together with a stream of news stories and wit, making this an unforgettable read. Praise for The Barking Dog:
The Barking Dog is a plea for awareness. The carnage that is Greer's life exists just around the corner, and we are Greer, living in the repulsive middle of a dangerous social and environmental soup of human construction. The Barking Dog is a rare achievement, an unstintingly honest, hilarious and dreadful delight . . ." —
