From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Theodore Sturgeon February 26 May 8 ) was an American science fiction author . He was born Edward Hamilton Waldo at Staten Island, New York. In 1929, after a divorce, his mother remarried William Sturgeon, and Edward changed his name to Theodore the better to match his nickname, "Ted". He was first published in 1939 and at first he wrote mainly short stories, primarily for the SF magazines, such as Astounding and Unknown , but also for general-interest publications such as Argosy . He is known to have used the pen name "E. Waldo Hunter" when two of his stories ran in the same issue of Astounding . He once ghosted an Ellery Queen novel

THEODORE STURGEON
February 26, 1918 - May 8, 1985 THEODORE STURGEON authored numerous science fiction and fantasy novels and short stories, among them, *More Than Human*, recipient of the International Fantasy Award, and "Slow Sculpture," winner of Hugo and Nebula Awards. Shortly after his death, he was given the Life Achievement Award at the World Fantasy Awards. He was born in New York City as Edward Hamilton Waldo. Theodore Sturgeon was a 21st Century Man. THEODORE STURGEON wrote two of the seventy-nine episodes of The Original STAR TREK TV series: "Shore Leave" [#17 from 1966 First Season] Alice In Wonderland is a character on a fantasy planet where the crew vacations. "Amok Time" [#34 from 1967 Second Season] Spock goes through the Vulcan mating cycle, "pon farr" as he must return to his home planet Vulcan and *mate, or die*. This episode that opened the second season shows Spock in an orgasmic eyeball roll as he goes deep into "Plak-tow", the *Blood Fever*. This episode has the first time we hear the motto "Live Long and Prosper" and the first time we see the Nimoy-invented Vulcan greeting (palm forward with fingers spread in a *V* between the middle and ring fingers). STURGEON'S LAW: "Ninety percent of everything is crap." It is derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, ninety percent of science fiction is crud. That's because ninety percent of everything is crud." When Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is usually changed to "crap".

Theodore Sturgeon
by Jacqueline Lichtenberg The first short story of Ted Sturgeon's that engraved his byline on my mind was titled "Bianca's Hands." That short story contained a penetrating image that, for me, defined both the genre of horror and the reasons why people are so fascinated by this genre. The image was of detached hands chasing the protagonist around her house. It gave me nightmares. It also defined for me why I don't like horror, but that's another story. Having taken notice of Theodore Sturgeon's writing, I studied it, because even then I wanted to be a professional science fiction writer. And so I came to understand how Ted handled various themes, most particularly alien reproduction. In the course of this, I ran across some interview or article, I forget now, where Ted's concept of the Q with the arrow through it, which represents his own personal, primary philosophical stance on how to live the best possible life, was explained in some detail. In brief, it is simply, "Ask The Next Question". That's harder than it sounds, for it requires that you be able to penetrate the walls that your cultural conditioning builds inside your mind, compartmentalizing it. Formulating the next question is very hard. It means you must never stop thinking, never take things at face value, never accept the illusion that you really understand everthing about a subject, never accept any theory as final.

    "Theodore Sturgeon"
"I am not a writer...a writer is someone who has to write. The only reason I write is because it's the only way I can justify all the other things I didn't do." And he wanted to do everything, try everything, and learn about everything. In the end, Ted had gone thru a lot of it. He became a Science Fiction writer beginning with a few tentative stories in his late teens and then hit the floor running in 1939 as one of John Campbell's favorite writers and soon expanded into a nationally known author. Using all story lengths, Sturgeon was as good in one as in another: short stories "Graveyard Reader" and "A Touch of Strange;" novelettes "It" and "The Martian and the Moron;" novellas "The [Widget], the [Wadget], and Boff" (shades of the Kuttners) and "...And My Fear is Great;" novels

Theodore Sturgeon (1918-1985) was one of America's finest writers. Kurt Vonnegut called him "a master storyteller." Samuel R. Delany went further calling him " the American short-story writer." And James Blish wrote that Sturgeon was the "finest conscious artist science fiction ever produced." One of the great figures of the Golden Age of sf, Sturgeon went on to write over 200 stories, several novels, film and tv scripts (including two of the most famous episodes of the original "Star Trek"), plays, and dozens of non-fiction reviews and essays. His many literary awards include the Hugo, the Nebula, and the Internatial Fantasy Award. The Theodore Sturgeon Literary Trust is working to assure that all of the writing of one of the masters of American fiction is once again in print and available to fans, scholars and other readers. A major step toward this goal is The Complete Stories of Theodore Sturgeon, a multivolume set of books being published by North Atlantic Books . Volumes I - VII are published. The volumes include careful story notes by series editor Paul Williams. These fascinating notes comprise a running biography of Ted Sturgeon and his writing process. In addition to the Complete Stories project
