Monsoon Country
Pira Sudham's novel, Monsoon Country, is set in Thailand, England and Germany to convey the cultural tension between the East and the West, the clashes between the new powers and the old values covering the span of 25 years of the socio-economic and political changes occurring in Thailand.
The novel gives, as no other fiction on Thailand has yet done, insights into Thai life, particularly that of rural Thailand.
Foreign writers writing about the Thai people look at Thailand from the 'outside, but Pira Sudham writes about his people and country as seen from the 'inside'. This is one of the things that makes them so fascinating.
'Pira Sudham is the kind of writer who is invaluable to a country like Thailand. He is someone who believes in development but not revolution, social justice but not communism, and who has learnt that not all the Westernisation in the world can take from a good man his responsibility to his own people'. South China Morning Post
'Of the very few Thai authors writing in English today, Pira Sudham is one of the most promising and eloquent'. Asiaweek
Fresh look at a clash of cultures
This is a full-length novel, written in English by Pira Sudham, a Thai born of peasant parents in Thailand's underprivileged northeast.

Mr Faq Keeper, Perhaps SCT FAQ should have a reading or resource list like some other FAQs do. Here's a list of books relating to Thailand. If anyone has read one and thinks it useful, propose it for inclusion in the FAQ reading list. My own suggestion is "Culture Shock - Thailand," a good handbook on Thai ways for those new to Thailand.

Bookazine Book Review: The Force of Karma by Lang Reid This book (ISBN 974-90079-1-3) was written by Pira Sudham. Published this year, it is the much awaited sequel to his Monsoon Country published in 1988. Pira Sudham is an interesting man in himself, coming from the Esarn region of Thailand, and he is able to write with accuracy of the plight of the disadvantaged from that area. He became a temple boy when he was 14 years old and sold artefacts to tourists to put himself through university. Following his winning of a scholarship to New Zealand, his career never looked back, becoming a well known and respected author, writing in the English language. He is undoubtedly an activist, an agent for change. His books deal with the life of the Esarn people and the socio-economic-political changes that are occurring within Thailand. He also writes with his heart on his sleeve, and it is possible to see Pira Sudham himself through the words ascribed to one of the principal characters, Prem Surin.

WORLD CULTURES V SYLLABUS ver. 2
BIC 4374: DIFFERING VISIONS AND REALITIES Course Description: World Cultures V seeks to explore the premises underlying the nature of reality and the meaning of human existence across cultural groups within the context of the emerging global village. During the semester we will examine the facets of that village by exploring some of the following issues: differing ways the nature of reality is perceived; the interaction among environment, language, religion, myths, and life cycles in the formation of culture; varying definitions of the meaning of human existence, how cultural change takes place, how cultures may be compared, whether communication across cultures can take place, and whether accommodation or conflict is an outcome of cultural interaction. The course will allow students to explore the range and meaning of cultural diversity by considering a series of alternative models for what culture is and how cultures are integrated. In addition, each student will participate in one intensively illustrated case study of a culture fundamentally different from his or her own. This exploration will seek, given the limitations of texts, artifacts, and resources, to communicate a native perspective, while explaining the difficulties of doing so. Specific cultures selected for investigation in this course are the Maya of Highland Guatemala, the Zulu of South Africa, and the Thai culture of Southeast Asia.
