WORLD CULTURES V SYLLABUS ver. 2 BIC 4374: DIFFERING VISIONS AND REALITIES Course Description: World Cultures V seeks to explore the premises underlying the nature of reality and the meaning of human existence across cultural groups within the context of the emerging global village. During the semester we will examine the facets of that village by exploring some of the following issues: differing ways the nature of reality is perceived; the interaction among environment, language, religion, myths, and life cycles in the formation of culture; varying definitions of the meaning of human existence, how cultural change takes place, how cultures may be compared, whether communication across cultures can take place, and whether accommodation or conflict is an outcome of cultural interaction. The course will allow students to explore the range and meaning of cultural diversity by considering a series of alternative models for what culture is and how cultures are integrated. In addition, each student will participate in one intensively illustrated case study of a culture fundamentally different from his or her own. This exploration will seek, given the limitations of texts, artifacts, and resources, to communicate a native perspective, while explaining the difficulties of doing so. Specific cultures selected for investigation in this course are the Maya of Highland Guatemala, the Zulu of South Africa, and the Thai culture of Southeast Asia.
