(Beech Tree Books, 1987; Collier Books, 1988), a history of the literary bohemia after WWII. While expanding his dissertation into Wallace Stevens: Musing the Obscure (New York University Press, 1967), Sukenick also published short stories and wrote his first novel, Up (The Dial Press), whose publication in 1968 caused a sensation. Death of the Novel and Other Stories (The Dial Press) followed in 1969 and his second novel Out (The Swallow Press) in 1973. In 1974 he joined several other writers dissatisfied with the returning conservatism of the publishing industry to found The Fiction Collective. The Collective published Sukenick's next three books Long-Talking Bad Conditions Blues (1979), and The Endless Short Story (1986) as well as the more recent Doggy Bag Blown Away , in 1986. The year before Southern Illinois University Press had brought out In Form: Digressions on the Act of Fiction (1985), a book of essays about "the ongoing struggle with the angel of form."
American Book Review . In 1988 he also acquired and redesigned Black Ice , a magazine of innovative fiction.

Javascript is either disabled or not supported by this browser. This page may not appear properly. Mosaic Man is part Tropic of Cancer , part Steppenwolf , part Breakfast of Champions as Sukenick uses Jewish folklore and history to weave his very avant-garde stories of a modern Jewish man in search of his roots.
The book begins with a stream-of-self-consciousness diatribe against Nazism and anti-Semitism, which is predictable, and can be a bit overwrought in places. The second chapter/story is a very Vonnegut-style mix of symbols accompanied by the fragmented transcription of a lengthy recorded interview with Sukenick's grandparents. In this chapter, we get a glimpse into Sukenick's roots that leaves the reader with the same sense of incompleteness that leads the author into his quest to fill in the missing words.

    SALTER, James. Autograph Postcard Signed.
October 5, 1997. A brief note agreeing to sign a book, written on a Washington D.C. hotel postcard. Tiny nick at margin; still fine. Signed with the author's initials SNYDER, Gary. Typed Note Signed. May 9, 1996. An aerogramme to Diane di Prima SONTAG, Susan. Typed Note Signed. February 17, 1986. A short, but interesting, note to another writer. In part: "Thanks for sending your piece on the PEN circus. It's almost the only thing I've read on the subject with which I agree." She goes on to comment: "The Mailer story, all of it, is even worse than you intimate. Crazier, more squalid. I'm trying hard to get it out of my head." Signed in full, after which the last name has been whited out. Folded in thirds for mailing; else fine. SPOCK, Benjamin. Typed Note Signed. June 14, 1967. A short note to a young writer and antiwar activist regarding his having signed a statement of support for draft resistance during the Vietnam war. Spock was the leading specialist in child-rearing principles for two generations and his public posture on the war and related issues was of considerable importance in framing the national debate and, in particular, gaining credibility and middle class acceptance for the antiwar movement. Stain at right edge, not affecting text. Folded for mailing; very good.

When Ronald Sukenick's first novel, UP , came out in 1968, post-modernism, avant-pop and autofiction hadn't been invented yet. UP invented them. Ronald Sukenick's ten subsequent books are typically twenty or thirty years ahead of their time, and UP is more timely than ever. Ronald Sukenick is himself the main character of his book, in which he glides undisturbed from present to future, from reality to fantasy. Some of the time he's an adolescent Brooklynite, at other times a part-time English teacher, a struggling writer living in a Lower East Side tenement, or a fantasist deftly moving in and out of numerous alter egos. His comings and goings produce a stunning tour de force of a novel—mutinous, violent, sexy, sad, and, above all, funny.
"...the funniest, most successful, and most satisfying new book that I've read in a long time..." The Nation
"...a compendium of sly jokes on literature...a panic of assorted delicacies...He (Sukenick), or do I mean the character of the same name, is an urban, literary, Jewish Don Quixote of our time." The New York Times Book Review
"Beg it, buy it, borrow it or steal it.
