23. Suzuki, David
suzuki, david. Canadian Scientist/Television Personality. david suzuki.Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, 24 March 1936.

SUZUKI, DAVID Canadian Scientist/Television Personality A house-hold name in English-Canada, David Suzuki has almost single-handily popularized some of the most complex scientific issues of our times, largely through the medium of television. While students, teachers and heads of state continually laud his attempts to demystify contemporary science and nature, some in Canada's science community argue that Suzuki's work on environmental issues, in particular, is politically biased. Politics aside, Suzuki's awards of recognition clearly speak for themselves: Canada's most prestigious award, the Order of Canada; UNESCO's Kalinga Prize and the United Nations Environmental Program Medal. Such recognition, particularly those bestowed to him in his native Canada, are in hindsight quite ironic. Growing up as a third generation Japanese-Canadian, Suzuki, his sisters and mother were placed in internment camps in 1942 by the Canadian government. After the war Suzuki and his family were forbidden by law to return to their Vancouver home. On the faculty at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Suzuki as a young academic began his illustrious television career teaching science on campus TV. Some ten years later this experience, coupled with his scientific expertise, eventually landed Suzuki a host position on the weekly television program

http://www.tv.cbc.ca/lifeandtimes/bio1997/suzuki.htm
David Suzuki DAVID SUZUKI If there's one person whose name is synonymous with the environmental movement in Canada , its David Suzuki. As host of CBC television’s The Nature of Things , he’s brought the world of science, and his environmental crusade, into the nations living rooms. He is also an acclaimed geneticist, prolific author and impassioned orator. Suzuki’s carefree childhood in British Columbia came to an abrupt end in 1942, when his family was herded into an internment camp . In the mass hysteria following the bombing of Pearl Harbour, people of Japanese descent were held as enemies of Canada. Their property and belongings confiscated, his family moved to Ontario to rebuild their lives. In high school, Suzuki excelled academically, but always felt like an outsider. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in the United States, then returned to British Columbia, gaining a reputation as a brilliant genetic researcher. In 1979, he was hired as host of The Nature of Things and began speaking out about the wanton destruction of Canada’s natural resources. His outspoken views have earned him accolades and enemies - he’s been the target of hate mail, vandalism and personal attack. In this candid biography, David Suzuki reflects on his role as husband and father, and talks about the lasting wounds of his war-time experience. He still feels the bitter pain of being called an alien in his own country. Despite his fame and success, he feels he must continue to prove his worth to other Canadians. Interviews with his sisters, his second wife, Tara, and their two daughters provide a rare glimpse of a complex, driven man.

1988 January
Dr. David Suzuki co-authored this volume with writer Eileen Thalenberg and biologist Peter Knudtson. The CBC TV's production of "The Nature of Things: AIDS, A Report" was the basis for the present work. In seven chapters the authors cover in detail the history, cause and effects of the dreaded AIDS virus. The language although detailed from a biological and medical standpoint, is written with the average reader in mind. The eleven black-and-white charts and illustrations underscore various points made in the chapter. They are clear and easy to read. Teachers using this book to supplement their courses on AIDS will find these suitable for enlargement. The only mistake this reviewer found among the illustrations appears on p. 21 where the position of the tonsils and the adenoids was reversed! The absence of a table of contents is an unfortunate oversight on the part of the authors; however, the adequate margins and large print make for easy reading.

Declaration of Interdependence - David Suzuki
Summary: David Suzuki's Declaration of Interdependence gives voice to the crucial facts on which the environment movement is based. Date: 23 January 1998 This We Know We are the earth, through the plants and animals that nourish us. We are the rains and the oceans that flow through our veins. We are the breath of the forests of the land and the plants of the sea. We are human animals, related to all other life as descendants of the firstborn cell. We share a common present, filled with uncertainty. And we share a common future as yet untold. We humans are but one of 30 million species weaving the thin layer of life enveloping the world. The stability of communities of living things depends on this diversity. Linked in that web, we are interconnected - using, cleansing. sharing and replenishing the fundamental elements of life. Our home, planet Earth, is finite; all life shares its resources and the energy from the sun and therefore has limits to growth. For the first time, we have touched those limits.

David Suzuki
By
Kyle Carmichael
David Suzuki is a well respected and brilliant individual whose work on environmental awareness has, and forever will, influence the lives of people around the globe. This Japanese-Canadian, an acclaimed geneticist, prolific author, and impassioned orator is the recipient of fifteen honourary doctorates, the Order of Canada, and many other prestigious science, television, and civil rights awards. He can be referred to as an industry: his books, his television programs, and his foundation. At the end of the twentieth century the Canadian 100 said he is "perhaps the most recognized Canadian on the planet(Rawlinson and Granatstein, PP 339)." David Suzuki has introduced the general population to scientific findings that hold a great significance on our future. He adds controversy to accepted principals. This is an influence society desperately needs. Society is dominated by the biased voices of governments and industry personnel who tell people ‘what they want to hear, or what they want them to hear’. David Suzuki conveys what the truth is in an intriguing and educational way. David Suzuki is an inspiration to everybody who will allow him to be an inspiration to them. What he overcame before he became the renowned Dr. David Suzuki is truly remarkable. Despite being an ‘alien’ during his schooling years, he was able to use his public speaking skills to get elected as student council president. He proved that hard work and dedication are the keys to success.
