    Frequently Asked Questions
The following questions are in this FAQ.
  • What is the Suzuki method, or mother tongue approach?
  • How does the Suzuki method differ from traditional music instruction?
  • Is the Suzuki method right for my child? Would I make a good Suzuki parent?
  • Can adults learn to play an instrument using the Suzuki method? ...
  • Doesn't Lamoureux Violins sell violins?
  • What is the Suzuki method?
While traveling in Europe in the 1920's, Dr. Shinichi Suzuki (1898 - 1998) of Japan had a hard time learning the German language. He pondered the fact that while adults often have difficulty learning a new language, young children acquire the skills of their native language quite readily. Children learn languages by repeatedly hearing words and phrases, then trying to imitate the sounds. Once the language becomes ingrained into a person's communication behavior, then the study of grammar, spelling, etc. makes sense. On the other hand, adults learning a second language generally study vocabulary lists, rules of grammar, etc. before they have a 'natural' feel of the language.

profile ideas projects photos ... contact May 7, 2002 David Suzuki Replies I received a fax reply today from David Suzuki regarding the question I asked him. To paraphrase, I asked Dr. Suzuki why he hadn't released his an electronic version of his book, as a way of not only spreading his message, but also as a way of deflecting any potential criticism of him "hawking stuff" while lambasting our culture of consumption. Dr. Suzuki replied: Dear Mr. Wilson: Thanks for your note and the suggestion. Unfortunately, my publisher is currently going down the tube so they're not interested in new ideas but I'll wait and see. I don't think it's hypocritical to be hawking ideas that are still tied to material things. The issue is what and how much we consume. David Suzuki Perhaps "hypocritical" is too strong a word, but I still feel that if Suzuki were truly interested in changing the world, then releasing an electronic version of his book would accelerate that cause. After all, a recent press release from Suzuki's own foundation protests the recent move in BC towards self-regulation of forestry industry. What better way to make a point than to publish the book electronically and help move forward the acceptance of electronic books as an alternative to chopping down forests? If you don't like what the forest companies are doing, why provide the material that drives the demand for paper? Though electronic books are currently second-rate substitutes for the real thing, they won't get any better without increased consumer demand. Publishers, such as the

    FAQ
Q: How do I get on Speakers Corner? Our interactive video booth is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All you have to do is come on down to the ChumCity building at Queen and John and have your say. It costs a dollar to use our video soapbox, and your looney goes to the Chumcharitable foundation, an umbrella organization which donates to various charities. Q: What kind of pieces get picked to be on air? The editors are looking for the segments which are the most compelling. This can mean the most opinionated, the best expressed, the funniest, the most passionate, the most human, or sometimes the most contentious. Because Speakers Corner is used on our Newscasts as well, we are likely to select pieces which are topical. The more concise and the better presented your view or performance is, the more likely you are to get on air. Q: Can I get a mobile Speakers Corner for my wedding or party?
