Nature: Poems Old and New

May Swenson.
Mariner Books/Houghton Miflin, 2000.
240 pages. $15.00 (paperback). The last line of May Swenson's poem "The Exchange" which appears at the end of the short opening section of Nature: Poems Old and New is this supplication: "Water, invite me to your bed." This humble and quiet but beautifully crafted line serves as a perfect summary of how Swenson views what the editors of this book have chosen to call nature. Throughout this collection of poems by an unusually gifted writer who is now largely overlooked, we are offered the precise thoughts of a poet who not only observed the non-human world around her, but inhabited it. There probably isn't a poet who has ever lived who hasn't written somehow about nature. But few ever live in and with the land and the other creatures, the universe beyond what has been created by human beings. Swenson is one of these few. Although understandable, it is unfortunate that this collection is called

Diagnosing and treating heart murmurs

Among the most frightening words new parents can hear are a pediatrician telling them their baby may have a heart problem. Yet most problems detected through well-baby exams turn out to be benign, while others are treatable with close clinical observation or the modern arsenal of cardiac drugs. Some problems, detected through fetal ultrasound, are even treatable before birth.
Dr. Jeanine Swenson, a pediatric cardiologist with Advanced Healthcare, sees a wide range of problems from newborns up to adults with congenital heart disease. She notes that the most common problem that leads to referrals is heart murmurs, but she also sees patients with stenosis (stiff and narrowed valves in the heart), syncope (insufficient blood flow, often causing loss of consciousness), shortness of breath and other problems. She also does fetal echocardiograms if a problem is suspected.

USS Lyman K. Swenson , a 2200-ton Allan M. Sumner class destroyer built at Bath, Maine, was commissioned in May 1944. Following an Atlantic shakedown she went to the Pacific, where she was to serve continuously for twenty-seven years. From September 1944 to the end of the war with Japan in August 1945, Lyman K. Swenson was active in operations off Leyte, Luzon, the China and Indochina coasts, the Japanese home islands and Okinawa. After a brief post-war return to the U.S., she deployed to the Western Pacific in 1946-47, then spent a few years training Naval Reservists along the U.S. Pacific coast. In March 1950, Lyman K. Swenson again went to the Far East where the late June outbreak of the Korean War soon involved her in vigorous combat activities. In three tours off Korea in 1950-53, she performed shore bombardment, blockading, and fleet screening duties. Her role in the September 1950 Inchon invasion is especially notable. After the Korean Armistice, Lyman K. Swenson

Ruling preserves assisted suicide in Oregon for now
Advocates of physician-assisted suicide won the first round of the latest judicial battle.
By Andis Robeznieks AMNews staff. May 6, 2002. A federal judge's ruling that U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft had overstepped his authority when he declared that writing lethal-dose prescriptions was not "legitimate medical practice" gave some observers of Oregon's physician-assisted suicide debate a feeling of déjà vu. "We've been through this before," said Oregon Medical Assn. Associate Executive Director Jim Kronenberg. With this article Links See related content This thought was echoed by Scott Swenson, executive director of Oregon Death With Dignity. Swenson noted that Oregon had approved physician-assisted suicide in two statewide referendums, that the U.S. Congress twice had failed to overturn the law, and that in 1997 the U.S. Supreme Court essentially had ruled that it was up to individual states to decide whether physician-assisted suicide should be permitted.

May 12, 2000 GC-070 Bishop Swenson preaches difficult text at difficult time "There was a lot pain and hurt yesterday, something that I really wanted to speak to, especially since it is our last day together," Swenson said. "But here I have this text where Jesus says, ‘Think not that I have come to bring peace; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.’" Swenson, who leads the church’s Denver Area, was not among those arrested, but she participated in a rally and march May 10 in support of changing the denomination’s position. Four years earlier, at the 1996 General Conference, she was one of the 15 "dissenting bishops" who signed a declaration opposing the church’s policy. In her sermon on Matthew 10:34, Swenson introduced the sword as an image of separation and clarity, of decisiveness about purpose. "I wanted to use the image to ‘cut through’ all of the stuff that keeps us from doing what we are supposed to do as the church." Swenson spoke of her frustration with institutional matters. She said that this was the source of her pledge for the last year to spend 1,000 hours of direct, hands-on service with homeless people and low-income children in her area. The delegates responded with applause.

More Henslow's Sparrow s ! Up to seven birds were found along the east side of A.E.Sea today.
Wednesday, May 29
I only managed to find two migrants today, an Alder Flycatcher and a Blackpoll Warbler . A first year male Orchrd Oriole was singing in the oak savannah in the the center of the main ring and I managed to count the Hooded Merganser's ducklings. There were eight.
Tuesday, May 28
This morning I concentrated on grassland areas in locations where Henslow's Sparrow s have been recorded. At least five singing males were found; three in the Main Ring prairie, one along south Eola Rd, and one by the Garden Club. In addition we had three or four Grasshopper Sparrow s along south Eola rd. and two pairs of Wilson's Phalarope s in the ponds along north Eola rd.
Sunday, May 26
It was an excellent morning for birdwatching today and there were also some good birds to be seen. The best find was a family of about 10 Hooded Merganser ducklings following their mother inside the Main Ring. The is the first confirmed site breeding record for this species. A
